Post-Banlist Meta Analysis [2018 Oct]

Duel Links Breaking News
Yubel event guide!
update 18/10/2018

Today, on October 16th, we received notice of the new Forbidden/Limited List and, in less than a week, changes that will heavily affect some of the current top-tier decks will officially be implemented into the game.

Most of these changes were to be expected, Fur Hires and Amazoness have been dominating in PvP for way too long and their presence alone makes it difficult for any new deck to become competitively viable, but others definitely caught a lot of people by surprise; I’m here to discuss the new Forbidden/Limited List and how it will affect the game in the next few months.

Skill Rebalancing

Cyber Style

[Skill] descriptionUser
Cyber Style (After Banlist)
Can be used each time your Life Points are at 3000 or below. Play 1 "Proto-Cyber Dragon" on from outside of your Deck for every 1000 Life Points below 4000. "Proto-Cyber Dragon" played with this Skill cannot be Tributed or used as a material except when for Fusion Summoning. This skill can nly be used once per Duel.

Cyber Style has been an extremely popular and versatile Skill, almost on the level of the old Balance, and unfortunately a couple decks heavily depended on it; the Skill was originally intended to be used for Fusion Summons, so, starting from October 19th, Proto-Cyber Dragon, when played with this Skill, will only be usable as Fusion Materials.

It only makes sense to see these changes implemented before any Synchro deck is able to truly take advantage of how easy it is to get one or two Level 3 monsters on the field using Cyber Style, but, while I do believe that, thanks to cards like Dynatherium and The Tricky, U.A. and other similar decks will still be viable after October 19th, it can't be denied that they will be severely hindered.

Life Cost 0

[Skill] descriptionUser
Life Cost 0 (After Banlist)
Can be used if your Life Points are 1000 or less. Until the end of the opponent's next turn ends, for one time only, you do not have to spend Life Points to activate a card. This Skill can only used once per Duel.

Cyber-Stein and Life Cost 0 have always been a great combination and now that cards like Cosmic Cyclone, Solemn Scolding and Gatling Dragon have been added to the game, Cyber Stein OTK decks, while not being always consistent, have become very powerful; the developers have decided that it was time to hit this Skill and thus this type of deck.

Post Banlist Cyber Stein OTK

I’m afraid there is no future for this deck: putting effort into getting a single Fusion Monster out on the field is a terrible idea. If a Fusion Monster with no summoning restriction is released in the future with a good enough effect, I might have to reconsider this statement, but I don’t see that happening so soon.

Forbidden/Limited List

Hey, Trunade! & Treacherous Trap Hole

I want to start from these two cards because of how impactful the fact that they have been added to the Semi-Limited List truly is: any deck that already features cards that are Semi-Limited will have to sacrifice something if they want to use them and even the ones that have not been touched by the Banlist yet will be able to run only one copy of each or two copies of one.

It’s not the first time a Spell/Trap Card that can fit in pretty much any deck ends up in the Forbidden/Limited List, Enemy Controller has been there for quite a long a time, but now there’s three of them.

It’s not the first time we see “Amazoness” cards in the Forbidden/Limited List, the deck survived after Amazoness Onslaught and Amazoness Baby Tiger were added to the Semi-Limited List and, even though this time it will be a lot more difficult, it could still manage to get through these changes.

In a few days Amazoness Princess will join Baby Tiger and Amazoness Onslaught will become Limited, which means that players will still be able to run both, but it also means Amazoness decks will not be able to run Enemy Controller and Treacherous Trap Hole anymore, unless they want to sacrifice their searcher.

Endless Trap Hell
Can be used when you have 3 trap cards in the Graveyard. 1 random Trap Card in your Graveyard is added to your hand. Then, shuffle 1 random Trap Card in your Graveyard into your Deck. This skill can only be used once per Duel.

  • As I said, the deck can still run both Amoness Princess and Amazoness Onslaught, the only problem is that it’s obviously going to be less consistent; Amazoness will essentially go from running five copies of Amazoness Onslaught to running only two.
  • Endless Trap Hell allows you to add to the hand or shuffle back into the Deck Amazoness Onslaught after it has been sent to the Graveyard, even though Cosmic Cyclone and Dragon Spirit of White can prevent this by banishing it.

Fur Hire

Wiz, Sage Fur Hire will be joining Donpa, Marksman Fur Hire in the Semi-Limited List, but, since both Hey, Trunade! and Treacherous Trap Hole will be added too, it’s pretty clear this time Fur Hire decks will not be able to make it so easily; we can safely assume that this deck will drop in popularity and from its current position in the Tier List after the new Banlist.

Playing this deck competitively without at least two copies of Beat, Bladesman Fur Hire, the searcher, will not be easy anymore.

Since both Treacherous Trap Hole and Hey, Trunade! are Semi-Limited, the deck will have trouble generating those quick OTKs; I decided to add Wall of Disruption for protection, since it’s very effective against Vampire decks, and Paleozoic Canadia.

Masked HERO

Vision HERO - Vyon is undeniably a great card, but it being Limited is not what’s going to bring down this deck, what is really going to be an issue for Masked HEROes will be having to choose between Destiny HERO - Celestial, Hey, Trunade! and Treacherous Trap Hole.

With the advent of the “Blue-Eyes Meta”, Decider will become an even better card, being able to essentially wall high Level monsters alone, so I would suggest running three copies of him.

Cosmic Cyclone is not the perfect substitute for Hey, Trunade!, but it can definitely be a good card against what will be left of Amazoness after the Banlist.

Paleozoic Canadia is a great way to prevent Protector with Eyes of Blue and Cosmo Brain from Special Summoning Dragon Spirit of White or Blue-Eyes White Dragon, it’s very versatile and it can also be useful in the mirror match.

Vampire decks are currently able to run Enemy Controller, Hey, Trunade! and Treacherous Trap Hole, so the new Banlist will still hit them indirectly, forcing them to decide which cards they want to use among these three; additionally Cyber Style will not be a viable option anymore since the Skill doesn’t provide Tribute Material anymore.

  • Hey, Trunade! was used to enable quick OTKs, taking advantage of Enemy Controller and the ability to swarm the field of the deck, but, if Amazoness go down in popularity, there is less of a reason to run it.
  • Enemy Controller and Treacherous Trap Hole can deal well with Blue-Eyes as long as Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon is not protecting them from targeting; these two cards can be used to prevent the deck from Special Summoning Blue-Eyes White Dragon or Dragon Spirit of White and from Synchro Summoning.

Silent Spellbook

This deck already runs only one copy of Treacherous Trap Hole, it’s not going to be affected by any of these changes; Silent Spellbook deals well with Blue-Eyes, I would go as far as saying it’s the worst matchup for the deck, but the paywall does hinder it a lot.

What Next?

I honestly believed that Blue-Eyes had a good shot at becoming the next meta deck even before this new Forbidden/Limited List, what these changes are going to do is to simply make its job easier; I expect to see Spellbook, Masked HERO and Vampire decks as the main alternatives to Blue-Eyes, Amazoness will probably hold on for a while, Fur Hire will drastically drop in popularity.

Hot New Top
Honestly guys...
Let's say you bought a deck with gems, it's kinda ridiculous to even think you can't actually have the same amount of gems (or maybe even more) after 4-5 months when the deck you bought finally gets a nerf (if such thing actually happens).

Yes, you can't just simply expect a deck to be tor tier forever, the new banlist doesn't affect me at all because well, those decks were kinda all and I just have plenty of gems to spend on the upcoming mini box.

Lol at n00bs
This game has never been expensive anyway, soon another f2p deck will be released and the very same noobs who kept losing to sylvans, d-heros, amazons and fur hires will be complaining.

That's the nature of a loser.
The guys never win, but they believe they have the right to insult others and call the game a "cash grabber".

Actually the fakers complaining about the game, complaining about players, trolling around, and those positive players that act high and mighty are the same persons.

Yeap I'm one of them. Keep whining this is free and I can buy every box without spending. "Komoney"? I'm offended y'know n00bs!

Cyberdark is ALREADY F2P
I can imagine people whining soon.
New minibox will be budget meta as well.
why are people celebrating the new banlist? fur hire and amazon were the most viable f2p decks. now we have to spend money or reset just to get vampire or bewd. other decks are for rich people.

Good lord, what a bunch of whinnies. With furs and amazoness going down even current tier 5 decks can push for KOG. You just need to git gud. In KOG page I see the likes of hazy, dark+silent magician, etc reach KOG. You just have to grind a bit more without having to depend on the meta

well, this is the most perfect banlist possible to bring variety to meta. i use amazoness mainly but i am tired of dueling the same 3 decks over and over

now people will have to use brains more often

I’m not really celebrating fur hire’s nerf (I thought the last nerf was enough), but I absolutely am celebrating Amazons getting hit for the sole fact that I despise Amazoness Onslaught. It is probably my most hated trap in the game. Good riddance imo

Good riddance frankly. I'm sick to death of HFH (aka baby's first deck). As ftp, I have managed fine with aquiring a Vampire, Inzektor and Aromage deck.
I have three copies of every card in the game with 9999 gems saved and I am totally free to play. STOP COMPLAINING and play a new deck for once :)

That isn't possible unless you are using mod. Would you please just stfu already about your gems? You are on here 24 hours a day, so you don't even have time to grind for even half of what you say.

'nerf block attack please, too op'
People whining about scrap dragon soon
Y'all act like f2p is becoming impossible now when there was almost nothing f2p about Amazonesses. Just switch to Aromages and you're good to go. Geez.

Amazoness is F2P though.

Princess : ranked UR ticket, was a drop during Elegant Mai event
Queen : level up Mai
Onslaught : merely an R, not that hard to obtain

I mean the backrow that you get from boxes. The deck is nothing without that expensive backrow.

But the backdrop will carry to other decks. Wall is generic, so is mirror wall, candida. Their not amazonas exclusive
I respect Konami's decisions with the banlist, though if they really wanted to encourage players to play paid decks they have to start lowering the cost of packs for money. It's such a simple solution yet they continue to charge hundreds of dollars just to complete a set of ultra rare cards in a main box (without any gems). It's ridiculous. No wonder there is such a divide between players when it comes to those who spend and those who don't. More people would be more encouraged to spend money if buying packs weren't so expensive and if it were actually profitable to spend the money that most people are willing to pay. Such a simple business tactic yet Konami continues to be 🔥 to it, but oh well, seems like they really do enjoy promoting "the whale" and "the beggar" with how they manage things in their game...
i pity those who bought vyon 3 times .. lol

"If there's to blame then it's the Anki abusers themselves" --> True. How can you play the same game for 6 months...
<< Anonymous

Anki definitely would still see play even after this nerf.

We still have enough good DARK "HERO" monsters in the game, both Drilldark and Decider are still at 3 copies, Malicious and Celestial are at 2 copies, and Vyon runs just fine at only 1 copy. For backrow, other than 3 Mask Change, just add cards like Galaxy and Cosmic Cyclone, Floodgate, WOD, and Canadia.
<< Anonymous
Anonymous Reply
If Konami keep doing scapegoat hits like this, they will eventually have to semi limit every single good DARK "HERO" monster in the game, which is ridiculous.

Seriously, sooner or later they will have no choice but to hit Anki directly.

I don't think they can even mix in the first place. They have two different playstyle.
Regarding post nerf furhire:

3 beats, 3 seals, 3 recons, 1 dyana and 2 wiz.

The idea of using recon as a donpa to 🔥 monsters with Canadia+ floodgate is pretty good but very slow and inefficient against some decks like yubel.

ties that bind don't do much against blue eyes as blue eyes attack points are pretty high, I switched to beatdown so having wiz and Dyna on the field will be relevant (3100 ATK dyna)

The OTK potential of furhire is gone now.

1 jinzo ( not as useful as before because amazanoness may disappear very soon + it hurts the deck consistency but it still remains as a sold option)

1-2 Canadias
2 offerings to the doomed : heavy cost but it has a very strong impact against heros, blue eyes( 🔥 cosmo brain then negate silvers cry or ancient rules with wiz = you win) and sometimes vampires, 2 cyclones
1 WOD ( as a surprise factor with huge impact against blue eyes and vampires)
Just some crappy guy
Those who are whinning about the furs and amazoness nerf also cried because how 🔥ous those decks areñ
