New player guide: What packs to buy first? [Feb 8]

Duel Links, which packs to buy, which decks to build to reach KOG for new players.
update 08/02/2023

Updated Information

Overview

If you have just started playing Duel Links or you simply haven’t opened the game in a while, you are probably looking at the Shop, wondering where to start. After all, this game has been out for over two years, and the amount of options available at this point is quite overwhelming. You do, however, have a limited amount of resources, so I am going to try and direct you towards what’s relevant at the moment.

Recommended Pull

For starters, let’s talk about some of the most popular cards in the game like right now—mostly Spell and Trap Cards that can fit in pretty much any deck. These cards have proven to be a great investment for many players by remaining relevant for a very long time and should be one of your primary foci, if you have just started playing the game.

The cards are sorted by Type and Rarity

Available from the very first main box, Sphere Kuriboh has remained relevant as a pretty strong hand trap to stop attacks. However, most of the cards from the first box aren't all that good anymore, so it's important to take that into consideration.

If you're willing to spend some real money, you can buy 1 copy of this in the shop section under "Special" tab. Otherwise, you can get it from the Selection Box Vol. 01 when they come back, or use a UR Dream Ticket.

D.D. Crow

D.D. Crow
D.D. Crow
DARK Winged Beast ★1
ATK 100 / DEF 100
Shining Hope [UR]
Selection Box Vol.05 [UR]
During either player's turn: You can discard this card to the Graveyard to target 1 card in your opponent's Graveyard; banish that target.

Best Counter Tech in the current meta. Great Disruption effect to stop your opponent's combo by graveyard effect activation or monster reviving.

Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon

Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon
Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon
DARK Dragon ★4
ATK 2500 / DEF 2000
Phantom of Rebellion [UR]
2 Level 4 monsters
You can detach 2 Xyz Materials from this card, then target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; its ATK becomes half its current ATK, and if it does, this card gains that lost ATK.

A pretty decent generic rank 4 to help get over just about any monster, as long as they can be targeted. Its effect pretty much means that you can deal 2500 damage to your opponent, but it's only usable once since it uses 2 materials.

It's definitely a good addition if you plan on playing decks that use a lot of level 4 monsters, but it's not a "core" card in any deck.

Abyss Dweller

Abyss Dweller
Abyss Dweller
WATER Sea Serpent ★4
ATK 1700 / DEF 1400
Photons of Galaxy [UR]
2 Level 4 monsters
While this card has an Xyz Material attached that was originally WATER, all WATER monsters you control gain 500 ATK. Once per turn, during either player's turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; any card effects that activate in your opponent's Graveyard cannot be activated this turn.

Abyss Dweller is used like a monster version of Necrovalley that's accessible to any Rank-4 spam Deck. Another benefit of running Abyss Dweller is, unlike Necrovalley, it does not affect your own graveyard so you're still able to activate graveyard effects.

Make sure to toggle your chain from "Auto" to "On" so you can use Abyss Dweller at the start of the opponent's turn where it is most effective. Chaining Abyss Dweller to an effect activation would not negate that effect.

Number 70: Malevolent Sin

Number 70: Malevolent Sin
Number 70: Malevolent Sin
DARK Insect ★4
ATK 2400 / DEF 1200
Photons of Galaxy [SR]
2 Level 4 monsters
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then target 1 monster your opponent controls; banish it until your opponent's next Standby Phase. At the end of the Damage Step, if this card attacked: You can make this card gain 300 ATK, and if you do, increase its Rank by 3.

Even though this only temporarily banishes your opponent's monster, using this on your opponent's Xyz monster will also remove all of their materials. It's also great to use if your opponent only controls 1 monster on the field, allowing you to attack directly which can often lead to an OTK.

Steelswarm Roach

Steelswarm Roach
Steelswarm Roach
DARK Fiend ★4
ATK 1900 / DEF 0
Photons of Galaxy [SR]
2 Level 4 monsters
During either player's turn, when a Level 5 or higher monster would be Special Summoned: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; negate the Special Summon, and if you do, destroy it.

This has somewhat limited use since it mostly works against certain kinds of special summoning like synchro, pendulum, or ones that special summons from the hand. Against opponents that happen to need them, having this on your field can shut them down pretty hard, or at the very least, make them do a weaker play.

Dark Hole

Dark Hole
Dark Hole
Normal Spell
Future Circuit [SR]
Destroy all monsters on the field.

Techs to wipe out all monsters on the field but you need to use it wisely since this effect is applied on yours as well.

Mystical Space Typhoon

Mystical Space Typhoon
Mystical Space Typhoon
Quick Spell
Antinomic Theory [UR]
Selection Box Vol.03 Mini [UR]
Target 1 Spell/Trap Card on the field; destroy that target.

There are many powerful spells and traps in the game, so having a quick and easy removal card like this helps a lot. It can be used in just about any deck, but it's not actually crucial. If you're not sure about which UR to get when you have something like a UR Dream Ticket, this is one of the safest choice out there at the moment, and might potentially last quite a long time.

The Antinomic Theory box provides some T.G. archetype, so you can roll the main box if you're interested. Otherwise, the selection box vol.03 mini provides many other good options.

Cosmic Cyclone

Cosmic Cyclone
Cosmic Cyclone
Quick Spell
Galactic Origin [UR]
Selection Box Vol. 01 Mini [UR]
Pay 1000 LP, then target 1 Spell/Trap Card on the field; banish it.

Pretty similar to Mystical Space Typhoon, but banishing a spell/trap card is a stronger form of removal compared to MST. This prevents certain spells/traps from activating in the grave when destroyed. It comes at a cost of 1000 LP, but this can actually be beneficial since some character skills require low LP.

Similar to Sphere Kuriboh, this is available in an old box with many cards that aren't that relevant anymore. You can buy 1 copy of this with real money from the shop's "Special" tab, or go with the Selection Box Vol. 01 Mini if you're a new player.

Forbidden Chalice

Forbidden Chalice
Forbidden Chalice
Quick Spell
Servants of Kings [SR]
Selection Box Vol. 01 Mini [SR]
Special Set Bundle Sale [SR]
Target 1 face-up monster on the field; until the end of this turn, that target gains 400 ATK, but its effects are negated.

Normal monsters are rarely ever used anymore, so the odds of this being useful in a duel are usually pretty high. Monsters effects used in the early turns are what allows them to extend to long combos that can lead to a full board, having Chalice to stop their combos can be a game winning factor.

Being a quick-play spell also makes this quite good since you can use it both offensively or defensively.

Forbidden Lance

Forbidden Lance
Forbidden Lance
Quick Spell
Valhalla Calling [UR]
Selection Box Vol. 02 Mini [UR]
Special Set Bundle Sale [UR]
Target 1 face-up monster on the field; until the end of this turn, that target loses 800 ATK, but is unaffected by the effects of other Spell/Trap Cards.

Chalice is used to prevent combos, while Lance is the card to ensure that you can perform those combos uninterrupted.

Can be used offensively or defensively depending on whose monster you target. Firstly, you can use Forbidden Lance to protect a monster from removal and other harmful effects. Alternatively, you can use it as a significant 800 ATK debuff on an opponent's monster.

Book of Moon

Book of Moon
Book of Moon
Quick Spell
Chaotic Soldiers [UR]
Selection Box Vol.04 [UR]
Target 1 face-up monster on the field; change that target to face-down Defense Position.

Highly versatile for defense and control purposes. For example, you can flip a newly summoned monster face-down so that your opponent can't follow up with a Synchro or Xyz play.

Enemy Controller

Enemy Controller
Enemy Controller
Quick Spell
Seto Kaiba [SR]
Seto Kaiba (DSOD) [SR]
Ranked Rewards [SR]
Activate 1 of these effects.● Target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; change that target's battle position.● Tribute 1 monster, then target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; take control of that target until the End Phase.

Versatile Quick-Play Spell that can be used to protect your monsters and/or your Life Points, or to take control of an opponent’s monster. Enemy Controller is currently Semi-Limited.

Crackdown

Crackdown
Crackdown
Continuous Trap
Selection Box Vol.02 Super Mini [UR]
Activate by targeting 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; take control of that monster. While you control that monster, it cannot attack or activate effects. When that monster leaves the field, destroy this card.

Great Disruption Tech not only allows you to take control 1 Face-Up monster your opponent control but also you can use that monster for Link Summoning.

Warning Point

Warning Point
Warning Point
Normal Trap
Link Revolution [UR]
When a monster(s) is Summoned: This turn, that face-up monster(s) cannot attack, its effects are negated, also it cannot be used as material for a Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, or Link Summon.

Another good tech to disrupt your opponent by targeting a Face-Up monster you opponent control from Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, or Link Summoning Combo. It can also stop that targeted monster from attacking and its effect also be negated.

Karma Cut

Karma Cut
Karma Cut
Normal Trap
Arena of Sanctuary [SR]
Selection Box Vol. 02 Mini [SR]
Discard 1 card, then target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; banish that target, then banish all cards with the same name as that monster from your opponent's Graveyard.

Banishing is a great form of removal since it's usually harder to recover banished cards. Also, the added effect of banishing similar copies from the graveyard can occasionally be useful to disrupt graveyard setup. The discard effect can actually be helpful in some Decks that need the graveyard setup.

Treacherous Trap Hole

Treacherous Trap Hole
Treacherous Trap Hole
Normal Trap
Visions of Ice [SR]
Selection Box Vol. 02 Mini [SR]
If you have no Trap Cards in your Graveyard: Target 2 monsters on the field; destroy those targets.

A Trap Card with a minor activation requirement and the ability to destroy two monsters on the field. Treacherous Trap Hole is currently Semi-Limited.

Other Recommended Pull

Black Rose Dragon
Black Rose Dragon
FIRE Dragon ★7
ATK 2400 / DEF 1800
Blazing Rose [UR]
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
When this card is Synchro Summoned: You can destroy all cards on the field. Once per turn: You can banish 1 Plant-Type monster from your Graveyard, then target 1 Defense Position monster your opponent controls; change that target to face-up Attack Position, and if you do, its ATK becomes 0 until the end of this turn.

To any Deck that can make Level-7 Synchros on demand, Black Rose Dragon is a great addition to your toolbox. Summon it when you want to get rid of the opponent's entire board. And if you can follow up with summoning a powerful monster, you can hit the opponent with a huge direct attack.

Sphere Kuriboh
Sphere Kuriboh
DARK Fiend ★1
ATK 300 / DEF 200
The Ultimate Rising [UR]
Selection Box Vol. 01 [UR]
When an opponent's monster declares an attack: You can send this card from your hand to the Graveyard; change the attacking monster to Defense Position. When you Ritual Summon a monster, you can banish this card from your Graveyard as 1 of the monsters required for the Ritual Summon.

Kiteroid
Kiteroid
WIND Machine ★1
ATK 200 / DEF 400
Card Trader [SR]
Activate when you discard this card from your hand during damage calculation after a direct attack. Any Battle Damage you would receive from that direct attack becomes 0. Only once, if you remove this card from the game when it is in your Graveyard, any Battle Damage you would receive from a direct attack becomes 0.

Another amazing low-Level monster that can allow you to survive an OTK. Kiteroid has been Semi-Limited pretty much right after its release.

Divine Wrath
Divine Wrath
Counter Trap
Valkyrie's Rage [UR]
When a monster effect is activated: Discard 1 card; negate the activation, and if you do, destroy that monster.

Compared to Forbidden Chalice, being a trap card makes it slower to use, but this one will destroy the affected monster and can also negate effects outside of your opponent's field. The cost of discard can be good in certain decks that makes use of the graveyard.

Floodgate Trap Hole
Floodgate Trap Hole
Normal Trap
Generation Next [UR]
Bundle Set Sale [UR]
When your opponent Summons a monster(s): Change that monster(s) to face-down Defense Position. Monsters changed to face-down Defense Position by this effect cannot change their battle positions.

Trap Card that’s generally used to slow down the opponent by locking a monster that has just been Summoned in face-down Defense Position.

Paleozoic Canadia
Paleozoic Canadia
Normal Trap
Valiant Souls [UR]
Bundle Set Sale [UR]
Target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; change it to face-down Defense Position. Once per Chain, when a Trap Card is activated while this card is in your Graveyard: Special Summon this card as a Normal Monster (Aqua-Type/WATER/Level 2/ATK 1200/DEF 0). (This card is NOT treated as a Trap Card.) If Summoned this way, this card is unaffected by monster effects, also banish it when it leaves the field.

Similar to Floodgate Trap Hole, Paleozoic Canadia can flip monsters face-down, but it’s more versatile and it has an additional effect that allows you to Special Summon it from the Graveyard as Level 2 monster.

Attention new players:

Konami just deleted the rewards and freebies for new players, you won't get dream tickets nor normal tickets. Now you would be at an even bigger disadvantage against those who spend money

If any veteran is reading this and doesn't believe me: make a new account and see by yourself, I'd post a screenshot but those take years to be approved.

not the same from the comment above but this you said is really important "1 lucky box roll" this almost never happens I remember I had to create about 5 accounts to get lucky and get 1 winda and 1 ultiapelio in the same run I completed the rest of the deck with tickets in exchange of staples that once at legend I really needed them

^^ Most decks nowadays require you to go to different boxes

Then you should wait for the new China DL server to be released next week. Everyone start new.

That's not what this discussion is about.

The "I create a new account every time I want to play deck, ez no money spend" is a myth, doesn't work and it consumes far more time than keep farming a main account
Anonymous
I'm surprised nobody saying Shiranui, since I see this deck 98% of the time on Ranked/KC Cup...
<< Anonymous
Anonymous Reply
98%? Excuse me? Karakuri & Crystron are the tier 1 now. You will be paired against them more often than Shiranui at DLv18. If you think that Shiranui is the deck to beat then you must be at DLv5.
<< Anonymous
Anonymous Reply
Shiranui is also still tier 1, in my opinion.
<< Anonymous
Anonymous Reply
Shiranui is not a tier 1. It can beat everything else but is no match to Karakuri or Crystron. Tournament player can understand the tier list better.
<< Anonymous
Anonymous Reply
DLM tournaments don't count because they use a different format. Many decks can counter Shiranui when side decks are an option.

Im planning to install duel links, what deck should I build a full F2P.

Go for staples first. Don't go for aromage unless you intend build heroes eventually.

With my experience lunaligh is the best to go. You also get lightsworn engine in the box for future use. Using your Dream tickets get two Cosmic cyclone to help activate master of fusion skill and get 1 yellow marten via SR dream. This is the best way for new accounts IMO.

Well, until platinum rank he will have some sort of fun. In legend rank he will propably regret pleying the game until he makes a tier deck and become one of the mass like most of us.

don't go for staple if u r new player, just choose a good deck and try to build it, than go for staple. bcs staple r hard to get always in the last pack, so you will wast ur ressource bfr even able to build a good deck and having fun with it.
good luck.

Hi guys, TCG Player here and I want to play this game. Any Advice? I can see that Shiranui is currently the meta but looking at it the cards in it use a lot of cards from different boxes. I starting with lunalight deck a good Idea?

29 days log-in, so far this is what i have as 100% F2P.

Neos fusion engine (missing 1 keeper) - from dream ticket.
1 Cosmic cyclone - From Dream Ticket
2 Floodgate traphole
3 balista squad
2 Raigeki Break
1 bad aim - dragunity structure box (bought it for bad aim and 1 ultimate providence)

Current fun deck is an Aromage deck and a neos shiranui deck.
Deck that I used for KOG is an standard shiranui deck with no Lancea and 2x samurai skull instead of Gozuki.

Any suggestion what bos shoulg I go for next, just got my 2nd Floodgate today with no more free gems from loaner decks and duel quiz (got all this morning)

Is it worth it going for an invoked engine?
Since I have neos engine already that would give me a tier1 deck, but invoked engine is 5x main box so its a long road if i decide.

Or shall i wait for zexal?

so far invoked is the best engine, surpassing lightsworn and neos.
but zexal is worth waiting too

Based on what I have currently any suggestions? I made it to KOG with this deck but its not an easy climb.

As a somewhat new player, I'm wondering is is it worth digging into Future Horizon for Cyber Dragon (and maybe SHS) or wait for Zexal world to release? CyDra is my fave archetype but I don't want to invest in anything if it'll just be powercreeped. The only decks I have now is a budget Blue Eyes and Lunalight deck and I don't win much with them. Thanks guys in advance!
<< Anonymous
Anonymous Reply
Can you send a picture of your current blue eyes Lightsworn deck?
<< Anonymous
Anonymous Reply
If you dont have gems that are gonna expore just w8 until zexal. Like in tcg, once the xyz come out the power creep will be huge.
Anonymous
I'm at Legend 3 with 0 gems deck
<< Anonymous
Anonymous Reply
That's why you have to set priorities:

1) build a budget version of your main archetype
2) get one copy of the best staples you need
3) get everything else you need for your main archetype
<< Anonymous
Anonymous Reply
B-but... I don't want to farm... I want to have everything without spending money or invest time... This game is so stupid...
<< Anonymous
Anonymous Reply
There are fallacies in your priorities.

Konami always releases new boxes + ramping up the power creep. F2P who struggle farming their 1st CC can't complete their archeype before the next box/power creep buries it. By then it's more gem efficient to switch to new half completed broken deck instead of adding staples to obsolete incomplete archetypes.

But then new box again, etc..
<< Anonymous
Andres Reply
I also have that deck, I did it to wait for the world of zexal and not spend gems, and I think it is the most fun deck I have played.
Anonymous
Many deck are actually viable for new players (they have 2 SR dream and 2 UR dream and they get so many gems). For example building Blackwings is also good. As of the current state they are less likely to get a hit because theres simply around 15 UR cards in the deck. So while building it is expensive, you are most likely not gonna suffer in the futur banlist. Invoker can still be hit even by a limited to 3 as they cant run cosmic anymore for switch hero, just to give an example.
<< Anonymous
Anonymous Reply
If they limit simmoon and black whriwind to 3 bw will SURELY suffer.
<< Anonymous
Anonymous Reply
So far, they have not done something like that. 2 UR cards of the same archetype or at least that what I know
Anonymous
Dream tickets: I advice to use them to get neos engine 1 Brave neos, 1 Neos fusion and 1 dragon keeper. Simply because you cant get extra copies of this card without using real money.
<< Anonymous
Anonymous Reply
It depends whether you're F2P or not. If you're not 100% F2P, it's better to buy additional structure decks with real money and use your Dream Tickets for staples in old boxes.

But if you're 100% F2P, Neos Engine is indeed a good investment.

If you are a NEW player and you want to reach KOG in your first season just follow my advices:
1. DON'T SPEND YOUR GEMS EARLY ON. 1st decide what deck you want to make.
2. Make a good starter deck WITHOUT spending your gems in packs. Use this deck to climb until Legend rank. Then after you have gained some experience use your gems to make a meta deck.
3. Do all weekly/event/etc missions
4. Choose a meta deck that can be built easily and is good for PvP (e.g. Shiranui all cards come from a minibox)
5. Have some dueling skills
My advice for a beginner would be to make a Red-Eyes deck to start. It is easy to build, powerful, fast and AI can use it perfectly for Auto-Duels. But most importantly, you don't have to buy a single packs to make it: 0 PACKS NEED. With this deck and some dueling skills can reach Legend Rank with ease. In details you will need:

Packs: 0
Structure Decks: Return of the RE (500gem)
Farm: Kaiba/Joey
Skill: Balance (Choose Yami Yugi as starter character)
2xEnemy Controller (Kaiba)
3xMetalmorph (Joey)
2xRE Dragon (Joey/Card Trader/Rex Raptor)
2xSkull Meister (Card Trader)
1xA/D Changer (Card Trader)
3xRE Insight (Ranked/Mission/Event ticket)
2xRE Return (Ranked/Mission/Event ticket)

Decklist:
Skill:Balance (Yugi)

Decklist:

Extra deck: 1
1 RE Slash Dragon

Monsters: 8
2 RE Black Dragon
1 RE Archfiend
1 RE Retro Dragon
1 RE Wyvern
1 A/D Changer
2 Skull Meister

Spells: 6
1 RE Fusion
2 Enemy Controller
3 RE Insight

Traps: 6
1 Return of the RE
2 RE Spirit
3 Metalmorph

You can make this deck in the VERY beginning (DM world-Stage 1) within lass than a week and reach Legend rank. Then you will have enough Gems to make a good meta deck and reach KOG. I did it and trust me it works.
(to be continued)
<< Anonymous
Anonymous Reply
Well this is always an option. However, there is no guarantee that you will be able to make a complete deck so fast. After all, it is just 500gem. Shiranui is a more complicated deck that needs some dueling experience, not ideal for new players. Also, AI tends to use it bad in auto duels, so it is time consuming too.

Don't go meta decks after you've built your first structure deck(I'd recommend going for Hero Generation and Destiny Rulers and bind those together). First, use your UR and SR dream for staples like cosmic cyclones/flood gates and wall of disruption. Then go dig for Canadia in Valiant Souls box(This also contains Masked Hero Anki to support your Hero/Destiny deck.)
<< Anonymous
Anonymous Reply
After youve got your 3 of each Canadia, Floodgate, and Cosmic Cyclone, then go decide what deck you want to build. Avoid getting meta decks early on because theyre just that, meta. Meta decks come and go but staple cards will stay relevant forever. Its better to have those staples in you account rather than 1 deck that might get phased out due to a banlist or shifting meta.
<< Anonymous
Anonymous Reply
Hello there. Binding Hero Generation and Destiny ruller plus some cards from the trader can result to a good starter deck (although a little expensive). Your tip to get staples is good but it won't get you KoG fast. Also, future cards will put older cards staple cards to never used list (look old "stables" wall of disruption, dimension prison etc). Canadia is not that good today.
Anonymous
Use 1 of your UR dream ticket to buy Brave neos, SR dream ticket goes for dragon keeper and a neos fusion. Get a cosmic cyclone with your second dream UR.

Next buy the neos structure deck and dragon keeper structure deck. Get a leng ling and the cyberdark engine via SR tickets to build a cyberdark neos deck, a bit competitive and a very good auto battle deck.

Then slowly get invoked engine to switch to invoked neos to be more competitive.

This is an expensive 1st deck but very much worth it. The idea is you'll be getting the staple 3x cosmic cyclone and two very good engines (neos and invoked), thi is more of an investment than the other option. The only possible wasted gems here is getting 3x volcanic shell.

Note: Karma cut is P2W card but can be replaced by raigeki break (mini box UR), ultimate providence is R.

This is not a new player guide. This is a whole year guide. It requires getting 4 dream tickets fgs. Not to mention go through 2 main boxes 3 times each.

A new player get 2 SR dream ticket and 2 UR dream ticket. Not to mention a lot of gems through duel quiz, loaner deck and leveling newly unlocked characters until level 30 (which does not take too long by playing againts the gate duelist with 3x reward and exp.)
