Duel Links, which packs to buy, which decks to build to reach KOG for new players.
Duel Links Breaking News
40th Main Box: Cross Dimension
update 07/03/2022

Updated Information

  • Main Box and Mini Box Investment are added.
  • Dinomist is added as Recommended Start Decklist.

Overview

If you have just started playing Duel Links or you simply haven’t opened the game in a while, you are probably looking at the Shop, wondering where to start. After all, this game has been out for over two years, and the amount of options available at this point is quite overwhelming. You do, however, have a limited amount of resources, so I am going to try and direct you towards what’s relevant at the moment.

Recommended Pull

For starters, let’s talk about some of the most popular cards in the game like right now—mostly Spell and Trap Cards that can fit in pretty much any deck. These cards have proven to be a great investment for many players by remaining relevant for a very long time and should be one of your primary foci, if you have just started playing the game.

The cards are sorted by Type and Rarity

Sphere Kuriboh

Sphere Kuriboh
Sphere Kuriboh
DARK Fiend ★1
ATK 300 / DEF 200
The Ultimate Rising [UR]
Selection Box Vol. 01 [UR]
When an opponent's monster declares an attack: You can send this card from your hand to the Graveyard; change the attacking monster to Defense Position. When you Ritual Summon a monster, you can banish this card from your Graveyard as 1 of the monsters required for the Ritual Summon.

Available from the very first main box, Sphere Kuriboh has remained relevant as a pretty strong hand trap to stop attacks. However, most of the cards from the first box aren't all that good anymore, so it's important to take that into consideration.

If you're willing to spend some real money, you can buy 1 copy of this in the shop section under "Special" tab. Otherwise, you can get it from the Selection Box Vol. 01 when they come back, or use a UR Dream Ticket.

Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon

Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon
Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon
DARK Dragon ★4
ATK 2500 / DEF 2000
Phantom of Rebellion [UR]
2 Level 4 monsters
You can detach 2 Xyz Materials from this card, then target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; its ATK becomes half its current ATK, and if it does, this card gains that lost ATK.

A pretty decent generic rank 4 to help get over just about any monster, as long as they can be targeted. Its effect pretty much means that you can deal 2500 damage to your opponent, but it's only usable once since it uses 2 materials.

It's definitely a good addition if you plan on playing decks that use a lot of level 4 monsters, but it's not a "core" card in any deck.

Abyss Dweller

Abyss Dweller
Abyss Dweller
WATER Sea Serpent ★4
ATK 1700 / DEF 1400
Photons of Galaxy [UR]
2 Level 4 monsters
While this card has an Xyz Material attached that was originally WATER, all WATER monsters you control gain 500 ATK. Once per turn, during either player's turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; any card effects that activate in your opponent's Graveyard cannot be activated this turn.

Abyss Dweller is used like a monster version of Necrovalley that's accessible to any Rank-4 spam Deck. Another benefit of running Abyss Dweller is, unlike Necrovalley, it does not affect your own graveyard so you're still able to activate graveyard effects.

Make sure to toggle your chain from "Auto" to "On" so you can use Abyss Dweller at the start of the opponent's turn where it is most effective. Chaining Abyss Dweller to an effect activation would not negate that effect.

Number 70: Malevolent Sin

Number 70: Malevolent Sin
Number 70: Malevolent Sin
DARK Insect ★4
ATK 2400 / DEF 1200
Photons of Galaxy [SR]
2 Level 4 monsters
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then target 1 monster your opponent controls; banish it until your opponent's next Standby Phase. At the end of the Damage Step, if this card attacked: You can make this card gain 300 ATK, and if you do, increase its Rank by 3.

Even though this only temporarily banishes your opponent's monster, using this on your opponent's Xyz monster will also remove all of their materials. It's also great to use if your opponent only controls 1 monster on the field, allowing you to attack directly which can often lead to an OTK.

Steelswarm Roach

Steelswarm Roach
Steelswarm Roach
DARK Fiend ★4
ATK 1900 / DEF 0
Photons of Galaxy [SR]
2 Level 4 monsters
During either player's turn, when a Level 5 or higher monster would be Special Summoned: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; negate the Special Summon, and if you do, destroy it.

This has somewhat limited use since it mostly works against certain kinds of special summoning like synchro, pendulum, or ones that special summons from the hand. Against opponents that happen to need them, having this on your field can shut them down pretty hard, or at the very least, make them do a weaker play.

Mystical Space Typhoon

Mystical Space Typhoon
Mystical Space Typhoon
Quick Spell
Antinomic Theory [UR]
Selection Box Vol.03 Mini [UR]
Target 1 Spell/Trap Card on the field; destroy that target.

There are many powerful spells and traps in the game, so having a quick and easy removal card like this helps a lot. It can be used in just about any deck, but it's not actually crucial. If you're not sure about which UR to get when you have something like a UR Dream Ticket, this is one of the safest choice out there at the moment, and might potentially last quite a long time.

The Antinomic Theory box provides some T.G. archetype, so you can roll the main box if you're interested. Otherwise, the selection box vol.03 mini provides many other good options.

Cosmic Cyclone

Cosmic Cyclone
Cosmic Cyclone
Quick Spell
Galactic Origin [UR]
Selection Box Vol. 01 Mini [UR]
Pay 1000 LP, then target 1 Spell/Trap Card on the field; banish it.

Pretty similar to Mystical Space Typhoon, but banishing a spell/trap card is a stronger form of removal compared to MST. This prevents certain spells/traps from activating in the grave when destroyed. It comes at a cost of 1000 LP, but this can actually be beneficial since some character skills require low LP.

Similar to Sphere Kuriboh, this is available in an old box with many cards that aren't that relevant anymore. You can buy 1 copy of this with real money from the shop's "Special" tab, or go with the Selection Box Vol. 01 Mini if you're a new player.

Forbidden Chalice

Forbidden Chalice
Forbidden Chalice
Quick Spell
Servants of Kings [SR]
Selection Box Vol. 01 Mini [SR]
Target 1 face-up monster on the field; until the end of this turn, that target gains 400 ATK, but its effects are negated.

Normal monsters are rarely ever used anymore, so the odds of this being useful in a duel are usually pretty high. Monsters effects used in the early turns are what allows them to extend to long combos that can lead to a full board, having Chalice to stop their combos can be a game winning factor.

Being a quick-play spell also makes this quite good since you can use it both offensively or defensively.

Forbidden Lance

Forbidden Lance
Forbidden Lance
Quick Spell
Valhalla Calling [UR]
Selection Box Vol. 02 Mini [UR]
Target 1 face-up monster on the field; until the end of this turn, that target loses 800 ATK, but is unaffected by the effects of other Spell/Trap Cards.

Chalice is used to prevent combos, while Lance is the card to ensure that you can perform those combos uninterrupted.

Can be used offensively or defensively depending on whose monster you target. Firstly, you can use Forbidden Lance to protect a monster from removal and other harmful effects. Alternatively, you can use it as a significant 800 ATK debuff on an opponent's monster.

Book of Moon

Book of Moon
Book of Moon
Quick Spell
Chaotic Soldiers [UR]
Selection Box Vol.04 [UR]
Target 1 face-up monster on the field; change that target to face-down Defense Position.

Highly versatile for defense and control purposes. For example, you can flip a newly summoned monster face-down so that your opponent can't follow up with a Synchro or Xyz play.

Enemy Controller

Enemy Controller
Enemy Controller
Quick Spell
Seto Kaiba [SR]
Seto Kaiba (DSOD) [SR]
Ranked Rewards [SR]
Activate 1 of these effects.● Target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; change that target's battle position.● Tribute 1 monster, then target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; take control of that target until the End Phase.

Versatile Quick-Play Spell that can be used to protect your monsters and/or your Life Points, or to take control of an opponent’s monster. Enemy Controller is currently Semi-Limited.

Fiendish Chain

Fiendish Chain
Fiendish Chain
Continuous Trap
Selection Box Vol. 03 [UR]
Shining Hope [UR]
Activate this card by targeting 1 Effect Monster on the field; negate that face-up monster's effects, also that face-up monster cannot attack. When it is destroyed, destroy this card.

Quick monster effect negation is extremely useful in a monster-heavy meta; useful for shutting down searchers and combo starting effects.

Floodgate Trap Hole

Floodgate Trap Hole
Floodgate Trap Hole
Normal Trap
Generation Next [UR]
Bundle Set Sale [UR]
When your opponent Summons a monster(s): Change that monster(s) to face-down Defense Position. Monsters changed to face-down Defense Position by this effect cannot change their battle positions.

Trap Card that’s generally used to slow down the opponent by locking a monster that has just been Summoned in face-down Defense Position.

Paleozoic Canadia

Paleozoic Canadia
Paleozoic Canadia
Normal Trap
Valiant Souls [UR]
Bundle Set Sale [UR]
Target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; change it to face-down Defense Position. Once per Chain, when a Trap Card is activated while this card is in your Graveyard: Special Summon this card as a Normal Monster (Aqua-Type/WATER/Level 2/ATK 1200/DEF 0). (This card is NOT treated as a Trap Card.) If Summoned this way, this card is unaffected by monster effects, also banish it when it leaves the field.

Similar to Floodgate Trap Hole, Paleozoic Canadia can flip monsters face-down, but it’s more versatile and it has an additional effect that allows you to Special Summon it from the Graveyard as Level 2 monster.

Karma Cut

Karma Cut
Karma Cut
Normal Trap
Arena of Sanctuary [SR]
Selection Box Vol. 02 Mini [SR]
Discard 1 card, then target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; banish that target, then banish all cards with the same name as that monster from your opponent's Graveyard.

Banishing is a great form of removal since it's usually harder to recover banished cards. Also, the added effect of banishing similar copies from the graveyard can occasionally be useful to disrupt graveyard setup. The discard effect can actually be helpful in some Decks that need the graveyard setup.

Treacherous Trap Hole

Treacherous Trap Hole
Treacherous Trap Hole
Normal Trap
Visions of Ice [SR]
Selection Box Vol. 02 Mini [SR]
If you have no Trap Cards in your Graveyard: Target 2 monsters on the field; destroy those targets.

A Trap Card with a minor activation requirement and the ability to destroy two monsters on the field. Treacherous Trap Hole is currently Semi-Limited.

Other Recommended Pull

Black Rose Dragon
Black Rose Dragon
FIRE Dragon ★7
ATK 2400 / DEF 1800
Blazing Rose [UR]
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
When this card is Synchro Summoned: You can destroy all cards on the field. Once per turn: You can banish 1 Plant-Type monster from your Graveyard, then target 1 Defense Position monster your opponent controls; change that target to face-up Attack Position, and if you do, its ATK becomes 0 until the end of this turn.

To any Deck that can make Level-7 Synchros on demand, Black Rose Dragon is a great addition to your toolbox. Summon it when you want to get rid of the opponent's entire board. And if you can follow up with summoning a powerful monster, you can hit the opponent with a huge direct attack.

Kiteroid
Kiteroid
WIND Machine ★1
ATK 200 / DEF 400
Card Trader [SR]
Activate when you discard this card from your hand during damage calculation after a direct attack. Any Battle Damage you would receive from that direct attack becomes 0. Only once, if you remove this card from the game when it is in your Graveyard, any Battle Damage you would receive from a direct attack becomes 0.

Another amazing low-Level monster that can allow you to survive an OTK. Kiteroid has been Semi-Limited pretty much right after its release.

Divine Wrath
Divine Wrath
Counter Trap
Valkyrie's Rage [UR]
When a monster effect is activated: Discard 1 card; negate the activation, and if you do, destroy that monster.

Compared to Forbidden Chalice, being a trap card makes it slower to use, but this one will destroy the affected monster and can also negate effects outside of your opponent's field. The cost of discard can be good in certain decks that makes use of the graveyard.

Recommended Start

These are the Decklists we recommended for new players to start investing.

Dinomist - The "Budget" Route

Dinomist is a pendulum-type deck with a simple beatdown or OTK playstyle. The best part about it is that all of the necessary Dinomist cards are available in a single mini box and they don't really need any extra deck monsters.

Example Core Dinomist Cards

Dinomist RexDinomist SpinosDinomist SpinosDinomist SpinosDinomist PteranDinomist Pteran
Dinomist PteranDinomist PlesiosDinomist PlesiosDinomist PlesiosDinomist StegosaurDinomist Charge

Example Filler Cards

Tiras, Keeper of GenesisNumber 37: Hope Woven Dragon Spider SharkAdreus, Keeper of ArmageddonNumber 70: Malevolent SinFull Armored Black Ray LancerNumber 18: Heraldry Patriarch
  • Dinomist Spinos is the main monster of the deck. It can attack twice in a turn, and attacks directly by tributing other monsters on your field.

  • With Dinomist Charge on the field, you can recover a card that goes into the extra deck once per turn. This helps you not run out of cards after making a play.

  • You can then normal summon the recovered card so you can tribute it for Spinos again so you can do a second attack with Spinos.

  • The monsters in the pendulum zones have effects that can protect your monsters from targeted cards or destroyed by card effects once, which means you are less likely to be disrupted by your opponent.

Triamid - The "Budget" Route

Triamid is a deck that focuses on the field spell to gain a good advantage. The monsters have the ability to quickly switch the field spell to another from the deck to better fit a situation, gaining a different effect from the newly placed field spell as well as an effect from the one that was discarded. This makes them quite consistent and reliable, making them a pretty good budget deck to use.

Go for staples first. Don't go for aromage unless you intend build heroes eventually.

With my experience lunaligh is the best to go. You also get lightsworn engine in the box for future use. Using your Dream tickets get two Cosmic cyclone to help activate master of fusion skill and get 1 yellow marten via SR dream. This is the best way for new accounts IMO.

Best decks for beginner

1 Aromage: almost 0 gems to make that, you just need open a mini box only one time and finish deck with card Trader

2 Ritual Beast: only one mini box + some staples and this deck is very strong actually

3 Heavy Samurai: open one main box only one time and dont need staples

4 triamads: no ban list, only one mini box + one copy of one card in another mini box and some staples

Aromage kinda needs luck with the dumb Card Trader to get some of the cards, though

Card drops in this game are rigged!
I don't remember the last time I received the UR card that I need in the first 100 packs. it's always in the last 20 on the bottom. And about the desire sensor - the best card is literally shown on the preview of each box (Fiendish chain and others)

Started a new account and for me this is the best day 1 player should do.

Step 1: Buys Red-eys structure deck or PVE to easily complete stage missions.

Step 2: Open Witch Sorcery box until you have 2x medusa, 2x field spell, 1xSelene.

Step 3: Exchange UR dream ticket on the 2nd day for 2nd Selene.

Step 4: Optional. Exchange Dream SR ticket for 3rd field spell.

There you have a deck strong in ladder. Most used skill is titan showdown for aggressive play or duel fuel for board control.

Lastly, watch out for Normal UR and SR ticket for nighmare shart and Giga-brilliant. Ypu can also open infinite ray box if you want to invest more for Gia and corebage.

If you are a NEW player and you want to reach KOG in your first season just follow my advices:
1. DON'T SPEND YOUR GEMS EARLY ON. 1st decide what deck you want to make.
2. Make a good starter deck WITHOUT spending your gems in packs. Use this deck to climb until Legend rank. Then after you have gained some experience use your gems to make a meta deck.
3. Do all weekly/event/etc missions
4. Choose a meta deck that can be built easily and is good for PvP (e.g. Shiranui all cards come from a minibox)
5. Have some dueling skills
My advice for a beginner would be to make a Red-Eyes deck to start. It is easy to build, powerful, fast and AI can use it perfectly for Auto-Duels. But most importantly, you don't have to buy a single packs to make it: 0 PACKS NEED. With this deck and some dueling skills can reach Legend Rank with ease. In details you will need:

Packs: 0
Structure Decks: Return of the RE (500gem)
Farm: Kaiba/Joey
Skill: Balance (Choose Yami Yugi as starter character)
2xEnemy Controller (Kaiba)
3xMetalmorph (Joey)
2xRE Dragon (Joey/Card Trader/Rex Raptor)
2xSkull Meister (Card Trader)
1xA/D Changer (Card Trader)
3xRE Insight (Ranked/Mission/Event ticket)
2xRE Return (Ranked/Mission/Event ticket)

Decklist:
Skill:Balance (Yugi)

Decklist:

Extra deck: 1
1 RE Slash Dragon

Monsters: 8
2 RE Black Dragon
1 RE Archfiend
1 RE Retro Dragon
1 RE Wyvern
1 A/D Changer
2 Skull Meister

Spells: 6
1 RE Fusion
2 Enemy Controller
3 RE Insight

Traps: 6
1 Return of the RE
2 RE Spirit
3 Metalmorph

You can make this deck in the VERY beginning (DM world-Stage 1) within lass than a week and reach Legend rank. Then you will have enough Gems to make a good meta deck and reach KOG. I did it and trust me it works.
(to be continued)
<< Anonymous
Anonymous Reply
Well this is always an option. However, there is no guarantee that you will be able to make a complete deck so fast. After all, it is just 500gem. Shiranui is a more complicated deck that needs some dueling experience, not ideal for new players. Also, AI tends to use it bad in auto duels, so it is time consuming too.

Don't go meta decks after you've built your first structure deck(I'd recommend going for Hero Generation and Destiny Rulers and bind those together). First, use your UR and SR dream for staples like cosmic cyclones/flood gates and wall of disruption. Then go dig for Canadia in Valiant Souls box(This also contains Masked Hero Anki to support your Hero/Destiny deck.)
<< Anonymous
Anonymous Reply
After youve got your 3 of each Canadia, Floodgate, and Cosmic Cyclone, then go decide what deck you want to build. Avoid getting meta decks early on because theyre just that, meta. Meta decks come and go but staple cards will stay relevant forever. Its better to have those staples in you account rather than 1 deck that might get phased out due to a banlist or shifting meta.
<< Anonymous
Anonymous Reply
Hello there. Binding Hero Generation and Destiny ruller plus some cards from the trader can result to a good starter deck (although a little expensive). Your tip to get staples is good but it won't get you KoG fast. Also, future cards will put older cards staple cards to never used list (look old "stables" wall of disruption, dimension prison etc). Canadia is not that good today.
Anonymous
Best Deck for new players now should be evil eye. The main deck can be built without resetting the box but you have to use your dream ticket for 1 copy of Selene and a copy of the field spell. afterwards you can optimized it by opening infinite ray box for 1 copy of Digi Bug corebage and Gia dragon, Thunder Charger nightmare shark will pretty sure be optainable in event SR and UR tickets.
<< Anonymous

Yea that's how they learned. They don't know yet. They are not ready. Normal. The second time they are facing that deck, it's gonna be different. They will get their winning consistency back, and the never-before-seen decks will still ask for meta decks to be banned.

That's why you have to set priorities:

B-but... I don't want to farm... I want to have everything without spending money or invest time... This game is so stupid...
<< Anonymous
Anonymous Reply
There are fallacies in your priorities.

Konami always releases new boxes + ramping up the power creep. F2P who struggle farming their 1st CC can't complete their archeype before the next box/power creep buries it. By then it's more gem efficient to switch to new half completed broken deck instead of adding staples to obsolete incomplete archetypes.

But then new box again, etc..

I also have that deck, I did it to wait for the world of zexal and not spend gems, and I think it is the most fun deck I have played.

Harpie deck is pretty cheap, they have staple lighting vortex as a plus you could play 2 off or even 3 if you are desperate. They don't need any other extra deck to reach legend. They could play the barrier you get from Rare card as discard folder. They world with a bunch of skill. The lightdark mirror is useful there. You only need to open 3 mini box max. faster if you only focus on getting 3 channeller the rest could be at 2. Even 2 chaneller are enough for consistency.

If you plan to start playing or started playing duel links recently, i recommend you to uninstall this app immediately, you don't want to get involved with mobsters.
Duel links is worse than child s3x trafficking, duel links is run by a large mafia network of cruel and dishonest people

*Konami's mafia company suggests the packs are pure RNG, but this is a big lie, the most popular cards in ranked have a much lower drop rate compared to useless cards, and there will always be one of the archetype cards in the bottom of the box.

*If the rigged packs weren't enough, there's an agent of the konami criminal organization on youtube to hype the game and lure innocent kids into this criminal system, a guy named Dkayed who owns the links meta duel, he works for the company Konami mafia and this is not said, because they want to keep it a secret, steal the credit card money of the parents of innocent children, this is totally illegal, this is what the big mafia networks do, the duel links meta hype the game to attract innocent children, it's a shame as organizations like INTERPOL haven't asked for an arrest warrant for duellinksmeta and Konami.

^That, most of f2p/low spenders have been playing the game wrong; you set your main account and bind it to a konami ID then you make 3 or 4 more accounts (bind them too) but you'll never play with them only to claim dream tickets and starter gems (3k), every new box open those accounts claim the 500 gems and leave. Like that you'll have several accounts with 10k gems + dream tickets ready to use
<< Anonymous

Just maintain 2 account and double earning would be enough.

You want strong decks you need to pull a crap tons of different boxes. Old pull have it's value too.

10k starter gem doesn't mean much in face of that, unless you intend to bot them up in casual for the gem then sure create tons of account then.

And no, it definitely doesn't put up an even fight against Amazoness. Sure, you can banish their two Onslaught, but the odds are against you. Good luck drawing your two CC in time to banish their searchable traps.
