Duel Links Metaphys deck, Metaphys in the current meta, how to use.

Overview

“Metaphys” is an archetype of LIGHT Wyrm monsters that was in the 20th Main Box Blazing Rose. It is an archetype whose playstyle revolves around banishing its own cards in order to set up and trigger certain effects. If they are banished, most “Metaphys” monsters can be shuffled back into the Deck and activate their effects, adding cards from the Deck to the hand, banishing cards from the Deck or Special Summoning monsters from the hand.

If they are Special Summoned by the effect of a monster of their own archetype, “Metaphys” monsters gain additional effects, some of which can completely change the state of the board.

How to Use

OTK with Metaphys Tyrant Dragon

Metaphys Tyrant Dragon
Metaphys Tyrant Dragon
LIGHT Wyrm ★8
ATK 2900 / DEF 2500
Blazing Rose [R]
Maximum Gustav [R]
If this card was Special Summoned by the effect of a "Metaphys" monster, it is unaffected by Trap effects, also if it attacks a monster, it can make a second attack in a row. If this card is banished, during the Standby Phase of the next turn: You can shuffle this banished card into the Deck; Special Summon 1 "Metaphys" monster from your hand, but banish it during the End Phase of the next turn.

Use Metaphys Tyrant Dragon’s effect to Special Summon another Metaphys Tyrant Dragon from your hand and use Asymmetaphys’s effect to lower the ATK of your opponent’s monsters and close the game.

Advice:
For set up, you might want to banish Metaphys Daedalus and use its effect to banish Metaphys Tyrant Dragon during your opponent’s Standby Phase. During your Standby Phase, Metaphys Tyrant Dragon will then allow you to Special Summon a “Metaphys” monster from your hand.

If your opponent has a Special Summoned boss monster, you can now Special Summon Metaphys Daedalus and get rid of it; if they have decided to play defensively and set some Spell/Trap Cards, you can Special Summon Metaphys Nephthys; if you see an opening for an OTK, you can Special Summon Metaphys Tyrant Dragon.

Mass Removal and Consistency

For both these monsters, they must be Special Summoned by a Metaphys monster's effect and therefore must be Special Summoned by Metaphys Tyrant Dragon to use their removal effects. Also, both of their consistency boosting will need to wait a turn before they take effect, which seems pretty slow but this is the standard for Metaphys decks.

Metaphys Daedalus
Metaphys Daedalus
LIGHT Wyrm ★7
ATK 2600 / DEF 1500
Blazing Rose [SR]
If this card is Special Summoned by the effect of a "Metaphys" monster: You can banish all other face-up Special Summoned monsters on the field. If this card is banished, during the Standby Phase of the next turn: You can shuffle this banished card into the Deck; banish 1 "Metaphys" card from your Deck, except "Metaphys Daedalus".

Metaphys Daedalus gets rid of problematic monsters. Since most powerful monsters are Special Summoned, Metaphys Daedalus' non-targeting, non-destruction, banishing removal can be quite devastating to most decks. However, this effect also banishes your other Special Summoned Metaphys monsters, which on one hand reduces your field presence, but on the other hand, prepares their effect activation.

For consistency boosting, a banished Metaphys Daedalus can return himself to the deck to banish another Metaphys card from your deck. This prepares the effect of the banished Metaphys monster to be activated on the next Standby Phase.

Metaphys Nephthys
Metaphys Nephthys
LIGHT Wyrm ★8
ATK 2400 / DEF 1600
Blazing Rose [R]
Maximum Gustav [R]
If this card is Special Summoned by the effect of a "Metaphys" monster: You can banish all Set Spells and Traps on the field. If this card is banished, during the Standby Phase of the next turn: You can shuffle this banished card into the Deck; add 1 "Metaphys" card from your Deck to your hand, except "Metaphys Nephthys".

Metaphys Nephthys banishes your opponent's set backrow. Most of the time this will only get rid of battle traps since cards like Raigeki Break or Floodgate Trap Hole, which can just be chained to it, and you won't be getting rid of face-up problematic Spell/Traps like Dark Magical Circle or Fiendish Chain.

More importantly, Metaphys Nephthys will let you search any card in the archetype during the next turn after it was banished. This is good for getting to your combo pieces, like getting Metaphys Daedalus to be Special Summon by a banished Metaphys Tyrant Dragon. You also get to search your support like Asymmetaphys for disruption and Metaphys Factor for field presence.

Metaphys Decoy Dragon

Metaphys Decoy Dragon
Metaphys Decoy Dragon
LIGHT Wyrm ★2
ATK 300 / DEF 200
Maximum Gustav [N]
Pendulum Effect
When your monster is targeted for an attack: You can target 1 of your "Metaphys" monsters that is banished or in your GY; banish this card, and if you do, Special Summon that monster in Attack Position. You can only use this effect of "Metaphys Decoy Dragon" once per turn.

Monster Effect
When your monster is targeted for an attack: You can target 1 of your "Metaphys" monsters that is banished or in your GY; banish this card, and if you do, Special Summon that monster in Attack Position. During the Standby Phase of the next turn after this card was banished: You can Special Summon this banished card. You can only use each effect of "Metaphys Decoy Dragon" once per turn.

A decent blocker card to potentially stop your opponent's attack or to recover/revive a Metaphys monster that's in the grave. Special summoning a Metaphys monster this way also activates their on-summon effects, giving you another way to activate Daedalus or Nephthys' effect other than relying on Tyrant Dragon.

It's also a "free" monster to banish with Asymmetaphys since it will just re-summon itself next turn.

Aloof Lupine

Aloof Lupine
Aloof Lupine
DARK Beast ★4
ATK 1700 / DEF 300
Blazing Rose [N]
When this card is Normal Summoned: You can banish 1 monster from your hand; banish 1 monster from your Deck with the same Type as that monster. If this card is destroyed by battle, or if this card in its owner’s possession is destroyed by an opponent’s card effect: You can target 1 of your banished monsters; add it to your hand. You can only use each effect of "Aloof Lupine" once per turn.

Aloof Lupine will be used to start your plays. Its ability to banish from your hand and deck is useful for triggering Metaphys effects. In most cases, you'll want to banish a Nepthys, either from hand or deck, for its search effect. The other card to banish depends on what you have/need.

  • Banishing Nephthys + Tyrant is good for when your opponent has face-up special summoned monsters. You can banish all of them by searching for Daedalus to be special summoned by the Tyrant's effect.
  • If you get turn 1 and your opponent has no monsters, you can banish a Nephtys + Daedalus -> Nephthys for more searchers, or go with Nephthys + Tyrant to special summon a Tyrant for a monster on your field.

Even if Aloof Lupine is flipped face-down by a Floodgate Trap Hole or a Paleozoic Canadia, you will still be able to banish a “Metaphys” monster from your hand and one from your Deck.

Aloof Lupine when destroyed can return a banished card back to your hand. It's useful if you ever need to add a Tyrant Dragon that's stuck in the banish pile since you have no Metaphys monster to summon in hand. Otherwise, it's often not recommended to add a card if they're about to activate in the next standby phase.

Dimensional Fissure

Dimensional Fissure
Dimensional Fissure
Continuous Spell
Selection Box Vol.04 Mini [UR]
Any monster sent to the Graveyard is banished instead.

A Powerful Counter Tech against the Decks that are rely on graveyard setup and combo. Besides that, Dimensional Fissure also has good synergy with Metaphys monsters since they need to be banished to trigger their effect.

Keep in mind that Xyz Materials underneath Xyz Monsters do not count as monsters, so detached Xyz Materials will be sent to the Graveyard even if "Dimensional Fissure" is on the field.

Activate Asymmetaphys

Asymmetaphys
Asymmetaphys
Continuous Trap
Blazing Rose [R]
Maximum Gustav [R]
Once per turn: You can banish 1 "Metaphys" card from your hand, and if you do, draw 1 card. Once per turn, if your "Metaphys" card in its owner's possession is banished: Apply this effect depending on whose turn it is.
● Your turn: All monsters on the field lose 500 ATK/DEF, except "Metaphys" monsters.
● Opponent's turn: Change the battle positions of all monsters on the field, except "Metaphys" monsters.

Use Asymmetaphys to enable the effects of your “Metaphys” monsters while also going through your Deck. If you don’t have a “Metaphys” monster in your hand, you can also banish a copy of Asymmetaphys or Metaphys Dimension.

  • The ATK/DEF reduction effect is permanent, even if this card leaves the field. Lowering the ATK and DEF of your opponent’s monsters will make it easier for Metaphys Tyrant Dragon to get over them and finish off your opponent with its second attack.

  • The last effect will trigger if you banished a Daedalus on your turn. Daedalus will banish a different Metaphys from your deck, triggering Asymmetaphys and putting your Aloof Lupine to defense position.

  • You'll have to be careful with the last effect since you have to anticipate it. If your Aloof Lupine already has 0 attack, DO NOT switch it to defense position if you banished a Daedalus. This will end up putting your Lupine to attack on your opponent's turn.

Metaphys Factor

Metaphys Factor
Metaphys Factor
Field Spell
Blazing Rose [N]
Maximum Gustav [N]
Each turn, 1 Level 5 or higher "Metaphys" monster you Normal Summon can be Summoned without Tributing, but banish it during the End Phase of the next turn. Your opponent cannot activate cards or effects in response to your "Metaphys" monsters' effect activations.

The Metaphys Field Spell gives you an easier way to put monsters on the field. However, since they were not Special Summoned by the effect of a Metaphy monster they are essentially just big beaters. Being banished during the End Phase of your opponent's turn makes sure your field isn't empty during their turn, and your Metaphys monster is ready to activate its effect when your Standby Phase comes.

The second effect prevents your opponent from negating your Metaphys monsters' effects. It also makes Metaphys Nephthys' Spell/Trap removal much more effective, ensuring that they can't respond by negating it.

Metaphys Ascension

Metaphys Ascension
Metaphys Ascension
Normal Trap
Maximum Gustav [SR]
Discard 1 "Metaphys" card; draw 1 card, then you can banish 1 "Metaphys" monster from your Deck. If this card is banished: You can add 1 "Metaphys" card from your Deck to your hand, except "Metaphys Ascension". You can only use 1 "Metaphys Ascension" effect per turn, and only once that turn.

Its trap effect is pretty good so that you can banish a Metaphys during your opponent's turn, making it easier to set up with Tyrant Dragon or to simply activate Asymmetaphys to switch your opponent's monsters to defense.

But it's also a great search effect when banished, which you can pretty easily do by using Asymmetaphys, Gold Sarcophagus, or even Daedalus' standby phase banish effect. Metaphys Factor can often be a good card to search for since it helps put a monster on the field.

Metaphys Dimension

Metaphys Dimension
Metaphys Dimension
Continuous Trap
Blazing Rose [UR]
If your opponent Special Summons a monster (except during the Damage Step): You can target 1 of your banished "Metaphys" monsters; Special Summon it, but banish it during the End Phase of the next turn. If your other "Metaphys" card in its owner's possession is banished while this card is already face-up in your Spell & Trap Zone: You can target 1 card your opponent controls; banish it. You can only use each effect of "Metaphys Dimension" once per turn.

Similar to the in-archetype Field Spell, Metaphys Dimension provides field presence without activating the Metaphys monster's first effect. The difference is while Metaphys Factor summons Metaphys during your turn, Metaphys Dimension will usually summon Metaphys during your opponent's turn. This also means that the Metaphys monster Special Summoned by Metaphys Dimension will usually be banished during your End Phase.

The second effect is really powerful because it will be activated quite often by Daedalus, Metaphys Factor, Metaphys Tyrant Dragon, and itself. Basically, anything that activates Asymmetaphys, will activate Metaphys Dimension's second effect.

Extra Decks

Trishula, the Dragon of Icy Imprisonment
Trishula, the Dragon of Icy Imprisonment
WATER Dragon ★9
ATK 2700 / DEF 2000
Arena of Sanctuary [UR]
3 monsters with different names
Must first be either Fusion Summoned using only monsters in your hand and/or field, or Special Summoned (from your Extra Deck) by banishing the above cards you control (in which case you do not use "Polymerization"). If this card was Special Summoned using only monsters that were originally Dragons: You can reveal and banish 3 cards (1 from your Deck, 1 from the top of your opponent's Deck, and 1 from their Extra Deck). You can only use this effect of "Trishula, the Dragon of Icy Imprisonment" once per turn.

When summoned, Trishula's only purpose would be as a beater. The main reason you would want to make him is to unclog your field, removing monsters afflicted with negative effects such as Floodgate Trap Hole.

Xyz Monsters

Even though the deck can be a little slow since it summons a monster 1 at a time through Tyrant Dragon's effect, you can use Metaphys Factor for the second monster to help make an Xyz.

However, an important thing to keep in mind is that using Xyz monsters' effect to detach a material will make it go to the grave. The only way to recover them is by using Decoy Dragon or Soul Release.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that only Tyrant Dragon and Nepthys are level 8, so it's a lot easier to make, while Daedalus is the only level 7 in the deck so it isn't as easy.

Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis
Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis
LIGHT Dragon ★8
ATK 3000 / DEF 2500
Infinite Ray [UR]
2 Level 8 monsters
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; Tribute any number of monsters from your hand and/or your side of the field (minimum 1), then destroy an equal number of cards on the field.

With sufficient cost, Heliopolis can destroy everything on your opponent's board resulting in an easy OTK. Best used as an ender since this requires a lot of cards and they all go to the grave, so it can be hard to recover from if you didn't manage to end the duel that turn.

Galaxy-Eyes Full Armor Photon Dragon
Galaxy-Eyes Full Armor Photon Dragon
LIGHT Dragon ★8
ATK 3000 / DEF 2500
Heart of Xyz [UR]
3 Level 8 monsters
You can also Xyz Summon this card by using a "Galaxy-Eyes" Xyz Monster you control as the Xyz Material, except "Galaxy-Eyes Full Armor Photon Dragon". (Xyz Materials attached to that monster also become Xyz Materials on this card.) Once per turn: You can target up to 2 Equip Cards equipped to this card; attach them to this card as Xyz Materials. Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then target 1 face-up card your opponent controls; destroy it.

Can be Xyz Summon using Cipher Dragon. Good for Face-up Card Destruction which is good for Monster Removal and Face-Up Backrow Removal for sometimes.

Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon
Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon
LIGHT Dragon ★8
ATK 3000 / DEF 2500
Phantom of Rebellion [UR]
2 Level 8 monsters
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; monsters you control cannot attack your opponent directly for the rest of this turn, except this card, also take control of the targeted monster until the End Phase, but while this effect is applied, it has its effects negated, its ATK becomes 3000, also its name becomes "Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon".

A pretty decent OTK card that can be easy and effective if your opponent has 2 monsters on the field. Even though Tyrant Dragon can attack twice for a similar result, this can be situationally better to deal more damage.

Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Blade Dragon
Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Blade Dragon
LIGHT Dragon ★9
ATK 3200 / DEF 2800
Heart of Xyz [SR]
3 Level 9 monsters
You can also Xyz Summon this card by using a Rank 8 "Galaxy-Eyes" Xyz Monster you control as the Xyz Material. (Xyz Materials attached to that monster also become Xyz Materials on this card.) Cannot be used as an Xyz Material for an Xyz Summon. Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then target 1 card on the field; destroy it. If this Xyz Summoned card is destroyed by your opponent's attack or card effect and sent to your Graveyard: You can target 1 "Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon" in your Graveyard; Special Summon it.

Can be Xyz Summon using Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon. Unlike Galaxy-Eyes Full Armor Photon Dragon with Face-Up Card Removal limitation, Cipher Blade can remove any 1 card on the field which is good for getting rid of some backrow that will disrupt your combo or Big Boss monsters with bigger ATK stats than any of your monsters.

Daigusto Emeral
Daigusto Emeral
WIND Rock ★4
ATK 1800 / DEF 800
Sign of Harpies [SR]
2 Level 4 monsters
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then activate 1 of these effects.
● Target 3 monsters in your Graveyard; shuffle all 3 into the Deck, then draw 1 card.
● Target 1 non-Effect Monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon that target.

Summon Emeral by using two Level 4 monsters as material. Emeral will then be used as a mini self-sufficient draw engine. Emeral can help you recover the monsters in the graveyard so you don't run out of sources.

Number 45: Crumble Logos the Prophet of Demolition
Number 45: Crumble Logos the Prophet of Demolition
EARTH Zombie ★2
ATK 2200 / DEF 0
Shark Fang [R]
2 or more Level 2 monsters
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then target 1 other face-up card on the field; while this monster is face-up on the field, that target has its effects negated. While that target is on the field, cards with the same name as that target, and their effects, cannot be activated.

Crumble Logos is another monster you can make with two Decoy Dragon. The negation effect is handy for turning off enemy boss monster effects and key Spell/Trap cards.

Other Cards Option

Block Attack

The Deck can often suffer from a slow start, mostly because your effects while banished activate during the next Standby Phase. This can leave you vulnerable during the opponent's coming turn so running defensive options like Sphere Kuriboh is a must.

Sphere Kuriboh
Sphere Kuriboh
DARK Fiend ★1
ATK 300 / DEF 200
The Ultimate Rising [UR]
Selection Box Vol. 01 [UR]
When an opponent's monster declares an attack: You can send this card from your hand to the Graveyard; change the attacking monster to Defense Position. When you Ritual Summon a monster, you can banish this card from your Graveyard as 1 of the monsters required for the Ritual Summon.

Sphere Kuriboh is still pretty useful to help protect your monsters because you don't want them destroyed and sent to the grave. Aside from Soul Release, the deck doesn't have a way to recover cards from the grave, and having to wait or rely on 1 card to recover them from grave isn't going to be reliable.

Battlin Boxer Veil

Battlin Boxer Veil
Battlin Boxer Veil
FIRE Warrior ★4
ATK 0 / DEF 1800
Rage of Volcano [R]
When you take battle damage: You can Special Summon this card from your hand, and if you do, gain Life Points equal to the damage you took.

Since Metaphys monsters don't stay on the field for long, there will be times where you don't have a monster on the field, or if you don't want to make a first turn play since you can only special summon Daedalus next standby. Having a handtrap helps the deck a lot to prevent potential OTKs and control which damage you take in general.

Other handtraps are fine, but Boxer Veil is used since it can even activate when your opponent attacks over your monsters. Recovering your LP preserves "Grit" skill, which is not doable with Kiteroid or Sphere Kuriboh.

Gold Sarcophagus

Gold Sarcophagus
Gold Sarcophagus
Normal Spell
Selection Box Vol. 03
Spellbound Silence [UR]
Banish 1 card from your Deck, face-up. During your second Standby Phase after this card's activation, add that card to your hand.

Lets you banish a specific Metaphys monster from your deck in order to start a play. Alternatively, you can use Aloof Lupine as the semi-limit card of choice to have a similar effect.

Soul Release

Soul Release
Soul Release
Normal Spell
Blackstorm Rising [SR]
Selection Box Vol. 01 [SR]
Target up to 5 cards in any Graveyard(s); banish them.

Banishing your Metaphys cards will re-activate them again during standby phase and shuffles them back to the deck. So this card essentially recovers your Metaphys monsters, as well as being able to banish your opponent's cards to stop certain plays.

It's quite a situational card since the archetype doesn't really use the grave, so it's only sent there IF they get destroyed by battle. But having more than 1 copy isn't that bad since banishing cards in your opponent's graveyard can be useful against a lot of decks.

Soul Absorption

Soul Absorption
Soul Absorption
Continuous Trap
Wonders of the Sky [R]
Blazing Rose [R]
If a card(s) is banished: Gain 500 LP for each.

The deck can banish every single turn. Having this helps prevent some OTKs, but it can end up clogging your field as well since you need at least 1 Asymmetaphys and Dimension.

Metaqphys ragnaroc could help the deck a lot and wont cause too much trouble in duel links, like the cards you already mentioned.
Necroface is way too powerfull in duel links, due to the 20card format. None wants to play vs boring, stall deckout decks.

Im fine with necroface being limited 1 though. Currently metaphys can be OTKed with Kite Tenjo's 1 monster xyz summon

Aside from Soul Release, I've been using with quite the good success, Freed the Brave Wanderer, a lvl-up reward monster from Tristan Taylor. It's effect: "Once per turn: You can banish 2 LIGHT monsters from your Graveyard to target 1 face-up monster on the field with higher ATK than this face-up card; destroy that target." seems to come in handy quite a lot in prolonged duels. Of course, "IF" you don't get a terrible hand and first draw, many people just surrender when Deadalus pokes its head and banishes all their monsters >:D

This deck was really good before 2 years. I used it and hit kog. However, today, with the limit of aloof wolf has lost its power. In addition, vs a DDD is instant surrender due to their ridiculus skill that skips stand by phase. Freed is bad since you have to rely on a summon in a meta full of book of moons, treacherous etc. Soul release is a guarantee use and can also counter your opponent gy.
