I have refined the deck from 23 cards to 20 cards from last month's KOG.
After numerous tests, It is better to limit deck size to 20 cards to reduce occasional brick rather than putting a side support card such as Charging Gaia the Fierce Knight for Rank 7 Xyz plays or Polymerization.
With the current Gaia support, the playstyle is better to be 1 dimensional (focus on summoning Gaia TMKOD) and protect it. To be fair, I've never comes into the situation where I want or need to Xyz summon. Poly does help sometimes, but most of the time, it is dead card especially if you drew it past turn one. It will only be a discard fodder for Spiral Spear Strike in most cases. So, I took it out.
Charging Gaia the Fierce Knight | LIGHT Warrior ★7 ATK 2300 / DEF 2100 |
Joey Wheeler (DSOD) Unlock Event - Memories of a Friend [SR] Duelist Chronicle: Battle City Showdown! [SR] Epic Yami Event [SR]
You can Normal Summon this card without Tributing. If this card is Normal Summoned without Tributing, its original ATK becomes 1900. If this card is Tributed: You can add 1 "Black Luster Soldier" monster from your Deck to your hand. You can only use this effect of "Charging Gaia the Fierce Knight" once per turn. |
Spiral Spear Strike | Continuous Spell |
Yami Yugi at Lvl 33 [R] Yugi Muto (DSOD) at Lvl 7 [R] Duel Quest Event [R] PvP Duel: Turbo Duel Grand Prix [R]
If "Gaia The Fierce Knight", "Swift Gaia the Fierce Knight", or "Gaia the Dragon Champion" you control attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict piercing battle damage to your opponent. If "Gaia the Dragon Champion" inflicts battle damage with this effect: Draw 2 cards, then discard 1 card. |
Soldier Gaia The Fierce Knight | DARK Warrior ★8 ATK 2600 / DEF 2100 |
Rise of Gaia [UR] | |
(Quick Effect): You can Tribute 1 Dragon Fusion Monster; Special Summon this card from your hand. If this card is Special Summoned: You can target 1 Attack Position monster on the field; change it to Defense Position. You can Tribute this card; add 1 Level 7 or higher Warrior monster from your Deck to your hand, except "Soldier Gaia The Fierce Knight". You can only use each effect of "Soldier Gaia The Fierce Knight" once per turn. |
1 Soldier Gaia is better save in hand to prevent OTK rather than to multi-attack for game unless you are absolutely sure the opponent doesn't have anything to screw you up.
More details on matchups below. NOT COUNTING opponents using Book of Moon on Gaia TMKOD as Book of Moon in any deck literally stops Gaia decks.
Photon Strike Bounzer | LIGHT Warrior ★6 ATK 2700 / DEF 2000 |
Photons of Galaxy [SR] | |
2 Level 6 monsters Once per turn, during either player's turn, when a monster effect is activated on your opponent's side of the field: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; negate the effect, and if you do, inflict 1000 damage to your opponent. |
Digital Bug Rhinosebus | LIGHT Insect ★7 ATK 2600 / DEF 2200 |
Infinite Ray [R] | |
2 or more Level 7 LIGHT Insect-Type monsters You can also Xyz Summon this card by detaching 2 Xyz Materials from a Rank 5 or 6 Insect-Type Xyz Monster you control, then using that Xyz Monster as the Xyz Material. (Xyz Materials attached to that monster also become Xyz Materials on this card.) If this card attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict piercing battle damage to your opponent. Once per turn, during either player's turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; destroy the face-up monster(s) your opponent controls with the highest DEF (all, if tied). |
Hardest match up last month because of Photon Strike Bounzer, but now, almost everyone has been using Rhinosebus over Bounzer lately.
Gagaga Sister | DARK Spellcaster ★2 ATK 200 / DEF 800 |
Shining Hope [SR] | |
When this card is Normal Summoned: You can add 1 "Gagaga" Spell/Trap Card from your Deck to your hand. You can target 1 other "Gagaga" monster you control; the Levels of that monster and this card become their combined current Levels, until the end of this turn. You can only use this effect of "Gagaga Sister" once per turn. |
Gagagabolt | Normal Spell |
Shining Hope [SR] | |
If you control a "Gagaga" monster: Target 1 card on the field; destroy that target. |
Gagagawind | Normal Spell |
Shining Hope [N] | |
Special Summon 1 "Gagaga" monster from your hand as a Level 4 monster. |
Going first, if you can make the standard play to get Gaia TMKOD on board, wait to see their play. If they normal summon Gagaga Sister, wait till the search effect is resolved, if they searched for Gagagabolt, pop Sister. They won't be able to make any further play unless they already have Gagagawind in hand. If they searched for Gagagawind, your best bet is to hope they don't already have Gagagabolt in hand and wait further to see what is the better card for you to pop.
Gaia the Magical Knight | LIGHT Warrior ★7 ATK 2300 / DEF 2100 |
Rise of Gaia [SR] | |
(This card is always treated as a "Gaia The Fierce Knight" card.) If you control no monsters, or your opponent controls a monster with 2300 or more ATK, you can Normal Summon this card without Tributing. If this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can Special Summon 1 Level 5 Dragon monster from your hand or GY in Defense Position. You can only use this effect of "Gaia the Magical Knight" once per turn. |
Curse of Dragonfire | DARK Dragon ★5 ATK 2000 / DEF 1500 |
Burning Nova [SR] Selection Box Vol. 01 [SR] Rise of Gaia [SR]
If this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can target 1 Field Spell Card on the field; destroy it. Once per turn: You can Fusion Summon 1 Fusion Monster from your Extra Deck, using monsters you control as Fusion Materials, including this card. |
Gaia the Fierce Knight Origin | EARTH Warrior ★4 ATK 1600 / DEF 1200 |
Raid Duel - Dimensional Disaster: Buster Gundil the Cubic Behemoth [UR]
This card can be treated as 2 Tributes for the Tribute Summon of a Warrior monster. You can only use each of the following effects of "Gaia the Fierce Knight Origin" once per turn. You can send 1 Level 5 or higher monster from your hand to the GY; Special Summon this card from your hand. During the Battle Phase (Quick Effect): You can banish this card from your GY, then target 1 monster on the field whose current ATK is different from its original ATK; its ATK becomes its original ATK. |
Steelswarm Roach | DARK Fiend ★4 ATK 1900 / DEF 0 |
Photons of Galaxy [SR] | |
2 Level 4 monsters During either player's turn, when a Level 5 or higher monster would be Special Summoned: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; negate the Special Summon, and if you do, destroy it. |
Going second, even if the opponent's board has Rhinosebus + Steelswarm Roach, you can play around it if you have Gaia the Magical Knight of Dragons (Gaia TMK) + Curse of Dragonfire (Curse) + Gaia the Fierce Knight Origin (Origin). Send Curse to GY to special summon Origin. Normal summon Gaia TMK and revive Curse.
Gaia the Magical Knight of Dragons | WIND Warrior ★7 ATK 2600 / DEF 2100 |
Rise of Gaia [UR] | |
1 "Gaia the Fierce Knight" monster + 1 Level 5 Dragon monster This card's name becomes "Gaia the Dragon Champion" while on the field. You can only use each of the following effects of "Gaia the Magical Knight of Dragons" once per turn. During the Main Phase (Quick Effect): You can target 1 other card on the field; this card loses exactly 2600 ATK, and if it does, destroy that card. When this card destroys an opponent's monster by battle: You can make this card gain 2600 ATK. |
Dragons Mirror | Normal Spell |
Soul of Resurrection [SR]
Remove from play, from your side of the field or your Graveyard, Fusion Material Monsters that are listed on a Dragon-Type Fusion Monster Card, and Special Summon that Fusion Monster from your Extra Deck. (This Special Summon is treated as a Fusion Summon.) |
If you successfully Fusion summon, chain pop their Rhino if they attempt to nuke your field. Legacy / Chalice can also help you dodge the nuke or having Dragon's Mirror can help you follow up with another Gaia the Magical Knight of Dragons (Gaia TMOKD).
Note: that Roach cannot negate the SS of Curse via Gaia TMK's effect nor the fusion summon via Curse's effect and Dragons Mirror, as it is a special summon by card effect, not an inherent special summon.
You will have a full board monster with variable DEF value, so Rhinosebus cannot pop the key card (Curse) to stop you from fusion summoning Gaia TMKOD.
Trifortressops | DARK Machine ★6 ATK 1600 / DEF 2800 |
Galactic Origin [UR] | |
During either player's turn, if your opponent Summoned 3 or more monsters this turn: You can Special Summon this card from your hand. If this card is Special Summoned this way, it is unaffected by other card effects, but loses 500 DEF during each player's Standby Phase. |
The matchup is quite hard this month due to they now run Trifortressops and going first with only Gaia TMKOD on board is not favourable either.
TD can easily fill their board and replenish their hand if you pop the wrong card with Gaia TMKOD's effect. To me, I would even say that TD is on tier 1 over Onomat if it wasn't for the consistency skill Onomat has and higher chance of TD bricking.
Cyber Slash Harpie Lady | WIND Winged Beast ★8 ATK 2600 / DEF 1400 |
Sign of Harpies [UR] | |
1 Tuner + 1+ non-Tuner monsters For this card's Synchro Summon, you can treat 1 "Harpie" monster you control as a Tuner. This card's name becomes "Harpie Lady" while on the field or in the GY. When a Spell/Trap Card or effect is activated (except during the Damage Step) (Quick Effect): You can target 1 monster your opponent controls or 1 "Harpie" monster you control; return it to the hand. You can only use this effect of "Cyber Slash Harpie Lady" once per turn. |
Swallows Nest | Quick Spell |
Aerial Assault [SR] | |
Tribute 1 face-up Winged Beast-Type monster; Special Summon 1 Winged Beast-Type monster from your Deck with the same Level the Tributed monster had on the field. |
Always save Gaia TMKOD's effect to pop / chain block Cyber Slash Harpie Lady. Don't try to pop their normal summoned monster to stop their combo as Swallows Nest can let them dodge the pop and OTK you right after.
Dark End Dragon | DARK Dragon ★8 ATK 2600 / DEF 2100 |
Aerial Assault [SR] | |
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner DARK monsters Once per turn: You can target 1 monster your opponent controls; this card loses 500 ATK and DEF, and you send that target to the Graveyard. |
World Legacy Clash | Quick Spell |
Blazing Rose [R] Selection Box Vol. 02 Mini [R] HERO Generation [R]
Banish 1 face-up monster you control (until the End Phase), then target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; that target loses ATK/DEF equal to the original ATK/DEF of that banished monster. |
Forbidden Chalice | Quick Spell |
Servants of Kings [SR] Selection Box Vol. 01 Mini [SR]
Target 1 face-up monster on the field; until the end of this turn, that target gains 400 ATK, but its effects are negated. |
Mystical Space Typhoon | Quick Spell |
Antinomic Theory [UR] | |
Target 1 Spell/Trap Card on the field; destroy that target. |
I find Resonator to be quite easy to play against. Refrain from using Gaia TMKOD until they have used up their normal summon unless it is absolutely necessary, such as Dark End Dragon has hit their field. Having a set World Legacy Clash / Forbidden Chalice also helps if they didn't MST (Mystical Space Typhoon) it.
Fusion Gate | Field Spell |
The Ultimate Rising [UR]
While this card is on the field: Either player can Fusion Summon a Fusion Monster without using "Polymerization", but the Fusion Material Monsters are banished instead of being sent to the Graveyard. |
f you have a set Legacy, prioritize popping Fusion Gate to prevent the fusion summon. Otherwise, wait till you see what card they fusion summon before deciding to pop using Gaia TMKOD's effect.
Lunalight Sabre Dancer | DARK Beast-Warrior ★9 ATK 3000 / DEF 2600 |
Judgement Force [SR] | |
3 "Lunalight" monsters Must be Fusion Summoned. Gains 200 ATK for each Beast-Warrior monster that is banished or in the GYs. Your opponent cannot target this card with card effects. During your Main Phase, except the turn this card was sent to the GY: You can banish this card from your GY, then target 1 Fusion Monster you control; it gains 3000 ATK until the end of this turn. You can only use this effect of "Lunalight Sabre Dancer" once per turn. |
Trishula, the Dragon of Icy Imprisonment | WATER Dragon ★9 ATK 2700 / DEF 2000 |
Arena of Sanctuary [UR]
3 monsters with different names Must first be either Fusion Summoned using only monsters in your hand and/or field, or Special Summoned (from your Extra Deck) by banishing the above cards you control (in which case you do not use "Polymerization"). If this card was Special Summoned using only monsters that were originally Dragons: You can reveal and banish 3 cards (1 from your Deck, 1 from the top of your opponent's Deck, and 1 from their Extra Deck). You can only use this effect of "Trishula, the Dragon of Icy Imprisonment" once per turn. |
Sky Galloping Gaia the Dragon Champion | WIND Dragon ★7 ATK 2600 / DEF 2100 |
Burning Nova [SR] Selection Box Vol. 01 [SR] Master of Chaos [SR] Rise of Gaia [SR]
1 "Gaia The Fierce Knight" monster + 1 Dragon-Type monsterThis card's name becomes "Gaia the Dragon Champion" while it is on the field. If this card is Special Summoned: You can add 1 "Spiral Spear Strike" from your Deck or Graveyard to your hand. When this card declares an attack on an opponent's monster: You can change the battle position of that opponent's monster. |
Although Lunalight is not as common as the above decks, it is good to mention that Gaia deck really has no out to Lunalight Sabre Dancer unless you tech in some non-targeting removal. Your only hope is that your opponent wrongly summon another monster on their field for your Gaia TMKOD to beat over it and get boosted over Sabre dancer or to have high enough resources to make Trishula, the Dragon of Icy Imprisonment using monster's on the field and still have enough fusion material to make Sky Galloping Gaia the Dragon Champion via Dragon's Mirror. Attack Sabre Dancer with Sky Galloping to switch it to defense position and use Trishula to beat over it.
Book of Moon | Quick Spell |
Selection Box Vol.04 [UR]
Target 1 face-up monster on the field; change that target to face-down Defense Position. |
All in all, Book of Moon is a really good card and the matchups above are all because I don't have one at my disposal. A single Book of Moon can make most of the matchups way easier.
