Overview

“Blackwing” is an archetype of mostly DARK Winged Beast monsters whose main strategy revolves around swarming the field and Synchro Summoning.

Aerial Assault, the 24th Main Box, has brought this archetype exactly what it needed and it just didn’t stop there. Now, thanks to Blackwing - Simoon the Poison Wind, Blackwings are incredibly consistent and a force to be reckoned with.

How to Use

Blackwing - Simoon the Poison Wind & Black Whirlwind

Blackwing - Simoon the Poison Wind
Blackwing - Simoon the Poison Wind
DARK Winged Beast ★6
ATK 1600 / DEF 2000
Aerial Assault [UR]
If you control no monsters and have this card in your hand: You can banish 1 other "Blackwing" monster from your hand; place 1 "Black Whirlwind" from your Deck face-up in your Spell & Trap Zone, then, either send this card to the GY, or immediately after this effect resolves, Normal Summon it without Tributing. You cannot Special Summon monsters from the Extra Deck for the rest of this turn, except DARK monsters. You can only use this effect of "Blackwing - Simoon the Poison Wind" once per turn. During the End Phase, send the "Black Whirlwind" placed by this effect to the GY, and if you do, take 1000 damage.

If you control no monsters and you have Blackwing - Simoon the Poison Wind in your hand, you can banish another “Blackwing” monster from your hand to place 1 Black Whirlwind face-up in your Spell & Trap Zone directly from your Deck and then either send Simoon to the Graveyard or Normal Summon it without Tributing.

You usually want make use of this opportunity to summon Simoon and then use Black Whirlwind to search Oroshi. Special Summon Oroshi and pair him with Simoon to make a level-7 Synchro.

Blackwings have always been pretty underwhelming whenever Black Whirlwind was not available, but, thanks to Simoon, they now have a way to get it onboard that also gets around negation like Legendary Six Samurai - Shi En and Silent Magician.

Black Whirlwind
Black Whirlwind
Continuous Spell
Blackstorm Rising [UR]
When a "Blackwing" monster is Normal Summoned to your side of the field: You can add 1 "Blackwing" monster from your Deck to your hand with less ATK than that monster.

Upon being Normal Summoned, Simoon will trigger Black Whirlwind, allowing you to add 1 “Blackwing” monster with less than 1600 ATK from your Deck to your hand, or, if you are playing Harpies’ Hunting Ground or Peak Performance, one with less than 1800 ATK. If you already have Black Whirlwind in your hand, remember to activate it before using Simoon’s effect to search twice.

During the End Phase, the Black Whirlwind that was placed on the field by Simoon’s effect is sent to the GY and you take 1000 damage, but you can actually prevent this from happening by returning the Continuous Spell to your hand via Blackwing - Zephyros the Elite’s effect.

ATK 1900 / DEF 300
Aerial Assault [R]
If you control a "Blackwing" monster other than "Blackwing - Kris the Crack of Dawn", you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). You can only Special Summon "Blackwing - Kris the Crack of Dawn" once per turn this way. Once per turn, this card cannot be destroyed by Spell/Trap effects.

Blazing Rose [UR]
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters

Truth Universe [UR]
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
After resolving a Field Spell Card that was activated during your turn: Draw 1 card. You can only use this effect of "Ancient Pixie Dragon" once per turn. Once per turn: You can target 1 face-up Attack Position monster on the field; destroy that target. There must be a face-up Field Spell Card on the field to activate and to resolve this effect.
Ancient Fairy Dragon
Ancient Fairy Dragon
LIGHT Dragon ★7
ATK 2100 / DEF 3000
Secrets of the Ancients [UR]
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monstersOnce per turn: You can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower monster from your hand. You cannot conduct your Battle Phase the turn you activate this effect. Once per turn: You can destroy as many Field Spell Cards on the field as possible, and if you do, gain 1000 LP, then you can add 1 Field Spell Card from your Deck to your hand.

Blackwings can recycle their graveyard, but they don't necessarily need this recycling to function properly. Because of this your match up should decide whether to go the Ancient Fairy or Ancient Pixie route.

When facing decks, like Shiranui or Crystron, that uses their graveyard better than Blackwings it is better to make Ancient Pixie Dragon and activate Necrovalley to shut down most of their plays. This also restricts you from using Hawk Joe, but it is more important to stop your opponent.

When facing decks, like Gouki and Gravekeeper, that can use Necrovalley as a control card and not be disrupted by Necrovalley themselves, you can opt to make Ancient Fairy Dragon to destroy your opponent's Necrovalley. This lets you search your own Necrovalley to thin your deck but don't activate it. Without Necrovally on the field, you are free to make powerful boards with Hawk Joe.

Assault Blackwing - Onimaru the Divine Thunder
Assault Blackwing - Onimaru the Divine Thunder
DARK Winged Beast ★12
ATK 3000 / DEF 2000
Aerial Assault [R]
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
If this card is Synchro Summoned using a "Blackwing" monster as Material, it is treated as a Tuner while face-up on the field. Cannot be destroyed by card effects. You can target 1 "Blackwing" monster in your Graveyard; this card's Level becomes the same as that monster's. You can only use this effect of "Assault Blackwing - Onimaru the Divine Thunder" once per Duel. If this card that was Synchro Summoned using only Synchro Monsters attacks, this card gains 3000 ATK during the Damage Step only.
Blackwing Tamer - Obsidian Hawk Joe
Blackwing Tamer - Obsidian Hawk Joe
DARK Winged Beast ★7
ATK 2600 / DEF 2000
Aerial Assault [R]
1 "Blackwing" Tuner + 1 or more "Blackwing" non-Tuner monsters
You can target 1 Level 5 or higher Winged Beast-Type monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon it. During either player's turn, when your opponent activates a card or effect that targets only this card, or when your opponent targets this card for an attack: You can target 1 other "Blackwing" monster you control that would be an appropriate target; that card/effect/attack now targets the new target. You can only use each effect of "Blackwing Tamer - Obsidian Hawk Joe" once per turn.

Hawk Joe's revive effect can be used offensively to put high ATK monsters onboard. This effect will mostly be used to revive your Synchro monsters. Notably, your opponent would destroy Raikiri to get rid of your multi-card removal effect. In that case you can revive Raikiri with Hawk Joe's effect, and with another Blackwing on the field Raikiri will be able to use his effect immediately. The revival also gives this deck good comeback ability, to the extent that summoning Hawk Joe while you're in a losing position can turn the tides of your Duel.

Redirecting an effect targeted at Hawk Joe is actually a decent form of protection, letting Hawk Joe dodge things like Fiendish Chain, Raigeki Break, and Ballista Squad. But can be costly since you essentially sacrifice another monster on your field. Hawk Joe's revival effect can give you monsters to redirect targeting effects to, then you can simply revive that monster the next turn.

Assault Blackwing - Chidori the Rain Sprinkling
Assault Blackwing - Chidori the Rain Sprinkling
DARK Winged Beast ★7
ATK 2600 / DEF 2000
Aerial Assault [R]
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
If this card is Synchro Summoned using a "Blackwing" monster as Material, it is treated as a Tuner monster while face-up on the field. This card gains 300 ATK for each "Blackwing" monster in your Graveyard. When this card is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard: You can target 1 Winged Beast-Type Synchro Monster in your Graveyard, except "Assault Blackwing - Chidori the Rain Sprinkling"; Special Summon it.

With Chidori's self ATK boost, and the monsters you used as synchro material, he starts out with at least 3200 ATK which is enough to beat even Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Chidori has the potential to reach pretty high ATK numbers when you load the graveyard, giving it the ability to deal with monsters that Raikiri cannot destroy.

When it’s destroyed by battle or card effect and sent to the GY, it allows you to target another Winged Beast Synchro in your GY and Special Summon it. The floating effect makes Chidori the perfect monster to fall back on when you are sure that your opponent has removal available, provided you have something to float into.

Assault Blackwing - Raikiri the Rain Shower
Assault Blackwing - Raikiri the Rain Shower
DARK Winged Beast ★7
ATK 2600 / DEF 2000
Aerial Assault [R]
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
If this card is Synchro Summoned using a "Blackwing" monster as Material, it is treated as a Tuner monster while face-up on the field. Once per turn: You can target cards your opponent controls, up to the number of other "Blackwing" monsters you control; destroy them.

If Assault Blackwing - Raikiri the Rain Shower is Synchro Summoned using a “Blackwing” monster as Material, it is treated as a Tuner while it’s face-up on the field. Additionally, once per turn, Raikiri allows you to target and destroy cards your opponent controls up to the number of other “Blackwing” monsters you control.

  1. Activate Blackwing - Simoon the Poison Wind’s effect, place 1 Black Whirlwind in your Spell & Trap Zone from your Deck.

  2. Normal Summon Simoon and search Blackwing - Oroshi the Squall, then make Raikiri.

  3. Special Summon Blackwing - Bora the Spear and/or Blackwing - Kris the Crack of Dawn from your hand and destroy up to 2 cards on your opponent’s side of the field using Raikiri’s effect

  4. use Raikiri and the Token Summoned by Steam to Synchro Summon Black-Winged Dragon or Red Dragon Archfiend, Special Summon Oroshi, use Oroshi, and Simoon to Synchro Summon Blackwing Tamer - Obsidian Hawk Joe, use Hawk Joe’s effect to Special Summon Raikiri from your Graveyard, activate Raikiri’s effect one more time.

Samurai Destroyer
Samurai Destroyer
EARTH Machine ★7
ATK 2600 / DEF 1400
Dark Dimension [R]
1 Tuner + 1+ non-Tuner monsters
If this card battles an opponent's monster, your opponent cannot activate cards or effects until the end of the Damage Step, also that opponent's monster has its effects negated during the Battle Phase only. If this face-up card in its owner's control leaves the field because of an opponent's card effect: You can target 1 Machine monster in your GY; Special Summon it.
Assault Blackwing - Sohaya the Rain Storm
Assault Blackwing - Sohaya the Rain Storm
DARK Winged Beast ★5
ATK 1500 / DEF 2000
Aerial Assault [N]
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
If this card is Synchro Summoned using a "Blackwing" monster as Material, it is treated as a Tuner while face-up on the field. You can only use each of these effects of "Assault Blackwing - Sohaya the Rain Storm" once per turn. ● When this card is Synchro Summoned: You can target 1 "Assault Blackwing" monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon it. ● During your Main Phase, if this card is in the Graveyard because it was sent there this turn: You can banish 1 other "Assault Blackwing - Sohaya the Rain Storm" from your Graveyard; Special Summon this card.

Skills Suggestion

  • Harpies' Hunting Ground: Increasing the ATK of your “Blackwing” monsters by 200 allows you to search Blackwing - Bora the Spear via Black Whirlwind by Normal Summoning Blackwing - Simoon the Poison Wind. It essentially gives you a wider variety of monsters to choose from whenever you are searching while also obviously increasing the offensive value of your monsters.
  • See You Later: Bounces the Black Whirlwind you searched with Simoon to your hand. Similar to how you would use Zephyros.

Matchups

Invoker Matchup [Neutral]

Blackbird Close can negate Aleister the Invoker’s effect, preventing your opponent from searching Invocation and thus from Summoning Invoked Cocytus, Invoked Magellanica, and Invoked Purgatrio. Now, you are not always going to have Blackbird Close available, but it’s not like you have no way of dealing with any of the “Invoked” Fusion Monsters, unless we are talking about Cocytus.

Play carefully if you are on the play: Summon your monsters in Defense Position to avoid being OTKed by a Concentrating Current. Lava Golem can be sort of an issue, but you can always recover your board with relative ease thanks to Blackwing Tamer - Obsidian Hawk Joe.

Darklord Matchup [Favorable]

The Sanctified Darklord can be used to negate the effects of Assault Blackwing - Raikiri, preventing you from destroying your opponent’s monsters, but you can either preemptively bounce the Trap Card with Hey, Trunade! before doing anything else, or, if it’s in the Graveyard and they simply plan to apply its effect via Darklord Ixchel, you can use Blackbird Close to prevent it. Additionally, Red Dragon Archfiend can get rid of Ixchel, Darklord Superbia and any other monster your opponent might have Summoned in Defense Position at once, opening the way for your other monsters.

Ritual Beast Matchup [Favorable]

Assuming you are on the play, Blackbird Close can negate Spiritual Beast Cannahawk’s effect, destroying it and basically preventing your opponent from Summoning anything from their Extra Deck. You can also use your Counter Trap to disable your opponent’s primary ways of dealing with high ATK monsters (Spiritual Beast Pettlephin and Destiny HERO - Plasma) or to negate the effect of a “Spiritual Beast” Fusion Monster.

Fortune Lady Matchups [Favorable]

Hey, Trunade! your opponent’s backrow away, destroy Fortune Lady Every or any other Synchro Monster your opponent might have Summoned with Raikiri’s effect. Strong backrow can be an issue if you have no way of getting rid of it, but you should generally be able to overwhelm your opponent by swarming the field with multiple Synchro Monsters.

Thank you Black Wings for getting me KoG for many consecutive seasons in a row, but I guess it was finally your time. Komoney hit you three times before they actually made you mostly unplayable. While I could always replace Blackbird close with generic traps, it won’t be the same. Until we next time when we get more BL support, I’ll be waiting.

I should report you as being false Blackwing fan. Real fans will stick it out through thick and thin. Also Blackbird Close really didn't hinder the deck all that much because of the various substitute traps. Swap your Close for Fiendish.

OP Reply
I actually ended up sticking with Blackwings since I invested so much in the deck. I just replaced Blackbird Close with Forbidden Chalice because effect negation is crucial for this deck when going first. And if your opponent top decks Cosmic (they always do), you can at least active it to give your monsters a small boost which made some decks unable to beat over. (1/2)

OP Reply
This deck was definitely more reliable with the hand trap when going first but it actually did alright in ranked and the Nov 2020 KC cup. And with the most recent ban list announcement, it’s likely BW will be back up to tier 1-2. And don’t forget, this deck still has potential support to be released in DL. (2/2)

Blackwing isn't broken after all if you compare it with Karakuri.

I think there is many Cards to consider playing with Blackwings, first I would run 2 Forbidden Lance, use defensive draw as a trap card, and play End Dragon or Scrap Dragon as an additional Synchro

Without the hand trap this Wack deck will be even more pitiful. If they go first, Set 1 FTH, summon a monster that gets over Raikiri, then next turn floodgate their Chicken Tuner, they directly go back home.

blackwing decks are awful 100% loss rate if you go first!.. a deck that requires you to go 2nd to be effective should NOT be in the conversation for KOG

First round summon Fairy Dragon and set Necrovalley, with this you'll stop many decks like cryston, lightstorm who use graveyard, or synchro a blackwing and have birdclose on your hand

Yeah, you should play it with the new build. A lot more consistent going first, Ihave been going Ws in KCGT and got KoG. Play defensive when going first, and utilize your Necrovalley so you can cuck half the meta. Use your Ancient Pixie Dragon’s draw effect to top deck your negate cards as well.

<< Anonymous(Hero)
Anonymous Reply
Yes, the win condition is to have a hand that can make sohaya and Raikiri and an additional lvl 4 or lower blackwing to reamin in the hand. make raikiri, summon the once needed to make sohaya then pop two cards via raikiri. Make sohaya. Level reduce raikiri then special summon the blackwing you used to reduce raikiri. make Hawk joe with raikiri and that monster, special summon raikiri via hawkjoe.

You are just being too greedy. Dont buy every other deck the moment they came out and focus on blackwing . Dont tell others to became like you and force them to play the "weak" version of the deck. Blackwing has exist for such a long time and still tiered.

Budget version of the deck exist to make sure you could play the deck before complete the set, and then slowly progress into the optimal deck. There is no reason to keep playing the budget version forever, you know. If you switch to other deck instantly, you wont ever got yourself an optimal deck ( and probably stuck in legend, even in the end of the month or worse).
