“Blackwing” is an archetype of mostly DARK Winged Beast monsters whose main strategy revolves around swarming the field and Synchro Summoning.
Aerial Assault, the 24th Main Box, has brought this archetype exactly what it needed and it just didn’t stop there. Now, thanks to Blackwing - Simoon the Poison Wind, Blackwings are incredibly consistent and a force to be reckoned with.

If you control no monsters and you have Blackwing - Simoon the Poison Wind in your hand, you can banish another “Blackwing” monster from your hand to place 1 Black Whirlwind face-up in your Spell & Trap Zone directly from your Deck and then either send Simoon to the Graveyard or Normal Summon it without Tributing.
Blackwings have always been pretty underwhelming whenever Black Whirlwind was not available, but, thanks to Aerial Assault, they now have a way to search it that also gets around Legendary Six Samurai - Shi En and Silent Magician.
Upon being Normal Summoned, Simoon will trigger Black Whirlwind, allowing you to add 1 “Blackwing” monster with less than 1600 ATK from your Deck to your hand, or, if you are playing Harpies’ Hunting Ground or Peak Performance, one with less than 1800 ATK. If you already have Black Whirlwind in your hand, remember to activate it before using Simoon’s effect to search twice.
If you activate Simoon’s effect, you can only Special Summon from the Extra Deck DARK monsters for the rest of the turn, which is surprisingly not that limiting.
During the End Phase, the Black Whirlwind that was placed on the field by Simoon’s effect is sent to the GY and you take 1000 damage, but you can actually prevent this from happening by returning the Continuous Spell to your hand via Blackwing - Zephyros the Elite’s effect.
Blackwing - Steam the Cloak is a Level 3 Tuner that, once per Duel, you can Special Summon from the Graveyard by Tributing any monster. Additionally, if Steam is face-up and it leaves it the field, it Special Summons a "Steam Token".
If Assault Blackwing - Raikiri the Rain Shower is Synchro Summoned using a “Blackwing” monster as Material, it is treated as a Tuner while it’s face-up on the field. Additionally, once per turn, Raikiri allows you to target and destroy cards your opponent controls up to the number of other “Blackwing” monsters you control.
1.Activate Blackwing - Simoon the Poison Wind’s effect, place 1 Black Whirlwind in your Spell & Trap Zone from your Deck.
2.Normal Summon Simoon, search Blackwing - Steam the Cloak via Black Whirlwind, Normal Summon Steam, search Blackwing - Oroshi the Squall
3.Special Summon Blackwing - Bora the Spear (or Blackwing - Kris the Crack of Dawn) from your hand, use Steam and Bora (or Kris) to Synchro Summon Assault Blackwing - Raikiri the Rain Shower, destroy a card on your opponent’s side of the field using Raikiri’s effect
4.use Raikiri and the Token Summoned by Steam to Synchro Summon Black-Winged Dragon or Red Dragon Archfiend, Special Summon Oroshi, use Oroshi, and Simoon to Synchro Summon Blackwing Tamer - Obsidian Hawk Joe, use Hawk Joe’s effect to Special Summon Raikiri from your Graveyard, activate Raikiri’s effect one more time.
All you need in order to get to this point is Blackwing - Simoon the Poison Wind, a “Blackwing” monster to banish from your hand, Blackwing - Bora the Spear or just a Black Whirlwind. If you activate Black Whirlwind before using Simoon’s effect, you are going to be able to search Blackwing - Steam the Cloak and Bora when Simoon is Normal Summoned by its own effect.
It Assault Blackwing - Chidori the Rain Sprinkling is Synchro Summoned using a “Blackwing” monster as Material, just like Raikiri, it is treated as a Tuner while it’s face-up on the field.
Chidori gains 300 ATK for each “Blackwing” monster in your Graveyard and, when it’s destroyed by battle or card effect and sent to the GY, it allows you to target another Winged Beast Synchro in your GY and Special Summon it.
Chidori has the potential to reach pretty high numbers when it comes to its ATK, giving it the ability to deal with monsters that Raikiri cannot destroy, and the floating effect makes it the perfect monster to fall back on when you are sure that your opponent has removal available.
Blackwing Tamer - Obsidian Hawk Joe is what allows this deck to set up those ridiculous boards early on. Hawk Hoe enables quick OTKs, but it also notably increases this deck’s ability to recover.
Black-Winged Dragon is NOT a “Blackwing” monster, so why should you play it? Because of Blackbird Close. When a monster your opponent controls activates its effect, by sending a face-up “Blackwing” monster you control to the Graveyard, Blackbird Close allows you to negate the activation of that effect and then destroy that monster.
If the opponent’s monster is destroyed, Blackbird Close allows you to Special Summon 1 Black-Winged Dragon from your Extra Deck, making up for the monster you Tributed in order to activate it.
Blackbird Close would be way too slow and not actually worth running if it wasn’t for the fact that, if you control a “Blackwing” Synchro Monster or a Black-Winged Dragon, you can activate from your hand.
Increasing the ATK of your “Blackwing” monsters by 200 allows you to search Blackwing - Bora the Spear via Black Whirlwind by Normal Summoning Blackwing - Simoon the Poison Wind. It essentially gives you a wider variety of monsters to choose from whenever you are searching while also obviously increasing the offensive value of your monsters.
Blackbird Close can negate Aleister the Invoker’s effect, preventing your opponent from searching Invocation and thus from Summoning Invoked Cocytus, Invoked Magellanica, and Invoked Purgatrio. Now, you are not always going to have Blackbird Close available, but it’s not like you have no way of dealing with any of the “Invoked” Fusion Monsters, unless we are talking about Cocytus.
Play carefully if you are on the play: Summon your monsters in Defense Position to avoid being OTKed by a Concentrating Current. Lava Golem can be sort of an issue, but you can always recover your board with relative ease thanks to Blackwing Tamer - Obsidian Hawk Joe.
The Sanctified Darklord can be used to negate the effects of Assault Blackwing - Raikiri, preventing you from destroying your opponent’s monsters, but you can either preemptively bounce the Trap Card with Hey, Trunade! before doing anything else, or, if it’s in the Graveyard and they simply plan to apply its effect via Darklord Ixchel, you can use Blackbird Close to prevent it. Additionally, Red Dragon Archfiend can get rid of Ixchel, Darklord Superbia and any other monster your opponent might have Summoned in Defense Position at once, opening the way for your other monsters.
Assuming you are on the play, Blackbird Close can negate Spiritual Beast Cannahawk’s effect, destroying it and basically preventing your opponent from Summoning anything from their Extra Deck. You can also use your Counter Trap to disable your opponent’s primary ways of dealing with high ATK monsters (Spiritual Beast Pettlephin and Destiny HERO - Plasma) or to negate the effect of a “Spiritual Beast” Fusion Monster.
Hey, Trunade! your opponent’s backrow away, destroy Fortune Lady Every or any other Synchro Monster your opponent might have Summoned with Raikiri’s effect. Strong backrow can be an issue if you have no way of getting rid of it, but you should generally be able to overwhelm your opponent by swarming the field with multiple Synchro Monsters.
