Blackwing: deck recipe [Mar 14]

Duel Links Blackwing deck, Blackwing in the current meta, how to use.
update 14/03/2023

Overview

“Blackwing” is an archetype of mostly DARK Winged Beast monsters whose main strategy revolves around swarming the field and Synchro Summoning.

While they are not in full power anymore due to some cards being put on the ban list, they can still perform quite consistently because of Black Whirlwind. This can end with you having 2 to 3 powerful synchro monsters on the field in a single turn.

Black Wind to the Top
Can be used if you begin with an Extra Deck that contains at least 3 "Blackwing" monsters. At the beginning of the Duel, place 1 "Mountain" to your field and add 1 "Black-Winged Dragon" to your Extra Deck, from outside of your Deck.

In addition, the following effect can be used once per Duel. Select 1 "Black-Winged Dragon" you control and place 1 Black Feather Counter to it.

How to Use

Blackwing - Simoon the Poison Wind & Black Whirlwind

Blackwing - Simoon the Poison Wind
Blackwing - Simoon the Poison Wind
DARK Winged Beast ★6
ATK 1600 / DEF 2000
Aerial Assault [UR]
If you control no monsters and have this card in your hand: You can banish 1 other "Blackwing" monster from your hand; place 1 "Black Whirlwind" from your Deck face-up in your Spell & Trap Zone, then, either send this card to the GY, or immediately after this effect resolves, Normal Summon it without Tributing. You cannot Special Summon monsters from the Extra Deck for the rest of this turn, except DARK monsters. You can only use this effect of "Blackwing - Simoon the Poison Wind" once per turn. During the End Phase, send the "Black Whirlwind" placed by this effect to the GY, and if you do, take 1000 damage.

Simoon's normal summon effect is considered an effect, which means it doesn't count towards your once per turn normal summon rule. Black Whirlwind's effect will activate once Simoon gets on the field, and you can normal summon another monster to activate Black Whirlwind again.

You usually want to make use of this opportunity to summon Simoon and then use Black Whirlwind to search Oroshi. Special Summon Oroshi and pair him with Simoon to make a level-7 Synchro. If you already have a tuner in your hand, you can consider using Black Whirlwind from Simoon to search for Zephyros instead.

Blackwings have always been pretty underwhelming whenever Black Whirlwind was not available, but, thanks to Simoon, they now have a way to get it on board that also gets around negation like Legendary Six Samurai - Shi En and Silent Magician.

Black Whirlwind
Black Whirlwind
Continuous Spell
Blackstorm Rising [UR]
When a "Blackwing" monster is Normal Summoned to your side of the field: You can add 1 "Blackwing" monster from your Deck to your hand with less ATK than that monster.

Black Whirlwind is the main core searcher card in the deck and it can be activated twice per turn if you use Simoon's effect.

If you are using a skill that uses Harpies’ Hunting Ground or Peak Performance, summoning a Simoon will let add a monster with less than 1800 ATK (instead of 1600), allowing you to search for Zephyros. If you already have Black Whirlwind in your hand, remember to activate it before using Simoon’s effect to search twice.

During the End Phase, the Black Whirlwind that was placed on the field by Simoon’s effect is sent to the GY and you take 1000 damage, but you can actually prevent this from happening by returning the Continuous Spell to your hand via Blackwing - Zephyros the Elite’s effect.

Blackwing Monsters

Blackwing - Zephyros the Elite
Blackwing - Zephyros the Elite
DARK Winged Beast ★4
ATK 1600 / DEF 1000
Aerial Assault [UR]
If this card is in your Graveyard: You can return 1 face-up card you control to the hand; Special Summon this card, and if you do, take 400 damage. You can only use this effect of "Blackwing - Zephyros the Elite" once per Duel.

Zephyros is the monster that you ideally want to be able to use as part of a synchro so that he's in the grave. Once it's in the grave, you can activate its effect by returning your Black Whirlwind to go for another synchro or to just have a 3rd monster to attack with.

You can search for Zephyros easily if you are using a skill that gives you a +200 ATK field spell like Mountain / Harpies' Hunting Ground, then activate Simoon's effect.

Blackwing - Bora the Spear
Blackwing - Bora the Spear
DARK Winged Beast ★4
ATK 1700 / DEF 800
Blackstorm Rising [UR]
If you control a "Blackwing" monster other than "Blackwing - Bora the Spear", you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). If this card attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict piercing battle damage to your opponent.

Its effect of being able to be special summoned is what makes this a good card as either an opener or the last one to summon.

Being a 1700 ATK also makes this the second highest ATK normal summonable monster to use with Black Whirlwind, meaning that you can search for most Blackwings in the deck, other than Kris the Crack of Dawn.

Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind
Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind
DARK Winged Beast ★3
ATK 1300 / DEF 400
Aerial Assault [UR]
If you control a "Blackwing" monster other than "Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind", you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). Once per turn: You can target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; that target's ATK and DEF become half its current ATK and DEF.

An easily special summonable level 3 tuner to go into a level 7. This is the tuner that you want to search for most of the time, especially if your opponent has a face-up monster.

Aside from just being a level 3 tuner, it has a pretty strong effect that's also not hard once per turn. If you can special summon Gale twice, then you can use its effect on the same monster twice. You will end up being able to get over most monsters, even if they have 10,000 ATK.

Blackwing - Kris the Crack of Dawn
Blackwing - Kris the Crack of Dawn
DARK Winged Beast ★4
ATK 1900 / DEF 300
Aerial Assault [R]
If you control a "Blackwing" monster other than "Blackwing - Kris the Crack of Dawn", you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). You can only Special Summon "Blackwing - Kris the Crack of Dawn" once per turn this way. Once per turn, this card cannot be destroyed by Spell/Trap effects.

This is the highest attack normal summonable Blackwing monster, which just means that you can use this with Black Whirlwind to search just about any other Blackwing monster you have in your deck.

Being able to be special summoned is also what makes this a really good card since you can special summon this at any point of your combo.

The last effect of not being able to be destroyed is a nice bonus and can be good if you think your opponent is playing something like Treacherous Trap Hole.

Blackwing - Oroshi the Squall
Blackwing - Oroshi the Squall
DARK Winged Beast ★1
ATK 400 / DEF 600
Aerial Assault [R]
If you control a "Blackwing" monster other than "Blackwing - Oroshi the Squall", you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). You can only Special Summon "Blackwing - Oroshi the Squall" once per turn this way. If this card is sent to the Graveyard as a Synchro Material Monster: You can target 1 monster on the field; change that target's battle position.

This is a level 1 monster used with Simoon to go into a level 7 synchro.

If you're using a field spell skill for the +200 ATK increase, you can summon Simoon to search for Zephyr/Bora, then normal summon the one you searched so you can add Oroshi.

Necrovalley

Necrovalley
Necrovalley
Field Spell
Selection Box Vol. 02 [UR]
Dark Dimension [UR]
All "Gravekeeper's" monsters gain 500 ATK and DEF. Cards in the Graveyard cannot be banished. Negate any card effect that would move a card in the Graveyard to a different place. Negate any card effect that changes Types or Attributes in the Graveyard.

Blackwings can be a powerful control type deck, and even more so if you have multiple Book of Moons. Necrovalley is a good addition to this type of play since it can prevent many different decks that uses the graveyard at all.

You'll want to use this at the end of your combo since some of the Blackwings effects do use the graveyard like Obsidian Hawk Joe or Zephyros.

Black-Winged Dragon & Blackbird Close

Since Blackwing - Oroshi the Squall has been removed from the Banlist, you can able to use Blackbird Close, a powerful monster effect negation Counter Trap card. After that, you can even bring out a free Black-Winged Dragon from your Extra Deck.

Black-Winged Dragon
Black-Winged Dragon
DARK Dragon ★8
ATK 2800 / DEF 1600
Blackstorm Rising [UR]
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monstersIf you would take damage from a card effect, place 1 Black Feather Counter on this card instead. This card loses 700 ATK for each Black Feather Counter on it. Once per turn: You can remove all Black Feather Counters on this card, then target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; that target loses 700 ATK for each Black Feather Counter you removed, and if it does, inflict damage to your opponent equal to the ATK lost by this effect.
Blackbird Close
Blackbird Close
Counter Trap
Aerial Assault [SR]
When a monster your opponent controls activates its effect: You can send 1 face-up "Blackwing" monster you control to the GY; negate the activation, and if you do, destroy it, then, you can Special Summon 1 "Black-Winged Dragon" from your Extra Deck. If you control a "Blackwing" Synchro Monster or "Black-Winged Dragon", you can activate this card from your hand.

Backrow Removal

Mystical Space Typhoon
Mystical Space Typhoon
Quick Spell
Antinomic Theory [UR]
Selection Box Vol.03 Mini [UR]
Target 1 Spell/Trap Card on the field; destroy that target.

Any card to help deal with your opponent's back row is important. It helps make sure that you can perform your combos uninterrupted.

The combo can be easily stopped if they remove your Black Whirlwind, or your normal summoned Blackwing monster as the effect is activating, which will prevent your search effect from Black Whirlwind.

Extra Decks

Ancient Pixie Dragon
Ancient Pixie Dragon
DARK Dragon ★7
ATK 2100 / DEF 3000
Truth Universe [UR]
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
After resolving a Field Spell Card that was activated during your turn: Draw 1 card. You can only use this effect of "Ancient Pixie Dragon" once per turn. Once per turn: You can target 1 face-up Attack Position monster on the field; destroy that target. There must be a face-up Field Spell Card on the field to activate and to resolve this effect.

This deck can somewhat easily perform a level 7 synchros due to its consistency with Black Whirlwind search, and having a good monster removal like this can be pretty handy. Though, oftentimes it's better to go into Raikiri instead since it's part of the Blackwing archetype, allowing you to make extended combo plays.

The effect of the +1 draw can be used when you activate Necrovalley, or by returning your Mountain / Harpies' Hunting Ground from the skill by using Zephyros' effect. Simply play the field spell again to get an extra draw.

Ancient Fairy Dragon
Ancient Fairy Dragon
LIGHT Dragon ★7
ATK 2100 / DEF 3000
Secrets of the Ancients [UR]
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
During your Main Phase: You can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower monster from your hand. You cannot conduct your Battle Phase the turn you activate this effect. During your Main Phase: You can destroy as many cards in the Field Zones as possible (min. 1), and if you do, gain 1000 LP, then you can add 1 Field Spell with a different name than the destroyed card(s), from your Deck to your hand. You can only use each effect of "Ancient Fairy Dragon" once per turn.

Blackwings can recycle their graveyard, but they don't necessarily need this recycling to function properly. Because of this, your match up should decide whether to go the Ancient Fairy or Ancient Pixie route.

When facing decks like Shiranui or Crystron that uses their graveyard better than Blackwings, it is better to make Ancient Pixie Dragon and activate Necrovalley to shut down most of their plays. This also restricts you from using Hawk Joe, but it is more important to stop your opponent.

When facing decks like Gouki and Gravekeeper that can use Necrovalley as a control card and not be disrupted by Necrovalley themselves, you can opt to make Ancient Fairy Dragon to destroy your opponent's Necrovalley. This lets you search your own Necrovalley to thin your deck but don't activate it. Without Necrovally on the field, you are free to make powerful boards with Hawk Joe.

Yazi, Evil of the Yang Zing
Yazi, Evil of the Yang Zing
DARK Wyrm ★7
ATK 2600 / DEF 2100
Selection Box Vol.04 Mini [SR]
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
Cannot be targeted by an opponent's card effects. You can only use each of these effects of "Yazi, Evil of the Yang Zing" once per turn.
● You can target 1 "Yang Zing" monster you control and 1 card your opponent controls; destroy them.
● When this card you control is destroyed by battle or card effect and sent to your Graveyard: You can Special Summon 1 Wyrm-Type monster from your Deck in Defense Position.

Yazi can be a useful addition to a Blackwing deck as it cannot be targeted by your opponent's card effects. Its destruction effect can also be useful for getting rid of problematic cards your opponent controls.

Assault Blackwing - Chidori the Rain Sprinkling
Assault Blackwing - Chidori the Rain Sprinkling
DARK Winged Beast ★7
ATK 2600 / DEF 2000
Aerial Assault [R]
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
If this card is Synchro Summoned using a "Blackwing" monster as Material, it is treated as a Tuner monster while face-up on the field. This card gains 300 ATK for each "Blackwing" monster in your Graveyard. When this card is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard: You can target 1 Winged Beast-Type Synchro Monster in your Graveyard, except "Assault Blackwing - Chidori the Rain Sprinkling"; Special Summon it.

With Chidori's self ATK boost, and the monsters you used as synchro material, he starts out with at least 3200 ATK which is enough to beat even Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Chidori has the potential to reach pretty high ATK numbers when you load the graveyard, giving it the ability to deal with monsters that Raikiri cannot destroy.

When it’s destroyed by battle or card effect and sent to the GY, it allows you to target another Winged Beast Synchro in your GY and Special Summon it. The floating effect makes Chidori the perfect monster to fall back on when you are sure that your opponent has removal available, provided you have something to float into.

Assault Blackwing - Raikiri the Rain Shower
Assault Blackwing - Raikiri the Rain Shower
DARK Winged Beast ★7
ATK 2600 / DEF 2000
Aerial Assault [R]
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
If this card is Synchro Summoned using a "Blackwing" monster as Material, it is treated as a Tuner monster while face-up on the field. Once per turn: You can target cards your opponent controls, up to the number of other "Blackwing" monsters you control; destroy them.
  1. Activate Blackwing - Simoon the Poison Wind’s effect, place 1 Black Whirlwind in your Spell & Trap Zone from your Deck.

  2. Normal Summon Simoon and search Blackwing - Oroshi the Squall, then make Raikiri.

  3. Special Summon Blackwing - Bora the Spear and/or Blackwing - Kris the Crack of Dawn from your hand and destroy up to 2 cards on your opponent’s side of the field using Raikiri’s effect

Blackwing Tamer - Obsidian Hawk Joe
Blackwing Tamer - Obsidian Hawk Joe
DARK Winged Beast ★7
ATK 2600 / DEF 2000
Aerial Assault [R]
1 "Blackwing" Tuner + 1 or more "Blackwing" non-Tuner monsters
You can target 1 Level 5 or higher Winged Beast-Type monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon it. During either player's turn, when your opponent activates a card or effect that targets only this card, or when your opponent targets this card for an attack: You can target 1 other "Blackwing" monster you control that would be an appropriate target; that card/effect/attack now targets the new target. You can only use each effect of "Blackwing Tamer - Obsidian Hawk Joe" once per turn.

Hawk Joe's revive effect can be used offensively to put high ATK monsters onboard. This effect will mostly be used to revive your Synchro monsters. Notably, your opponent would destroy Raikiri to get rid of your multi-card removal effect. In that case, you can revive Raikiri with Hawk Joe's effect.

With another Blackwing on the field, Raikiri will be able to use his effect immediately. The revival also gives this deck good comeback ability, to the extent that summoning Hawk Joe while you're in a losing position can turn the tides of your Duel.

Redirecting an effect targeted at Hawk Joe is actually a decent form of protection, letting Hawk Joe dodge things like Fiendish Chain, Raigeki Break, and Ballista Squad. But can be costly since you essentially sacrifice another monster on your field. Hawk Joe's revival effect can give you monsters to redirect targeting effects to, then you can simply revive that monster the next turn.

Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon
Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon
DARK Dragon ★4
ATK 2500 / DEF 2000
Phantom of Rebellion [UR]
2 Level 4 monsters
You can detach 2 Xyz Materials from this card, then target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; its ATK becomes half its current ATK, and if it does, this card gains that lost ATK.

Its effect essentially lets you deal 2500 (its own ATK) damage if this attacks the monster you targeted. The advantage is that your opponent's monster's ATK is also lowered, allowing you to attack over it with your other weaker monsters.

Abyss Dweller
Abyss Dweller
WATER Sea Serpent ★4
ATK 1700 / DEF 1400
Photons of Galaxy [UR]
Selection Box Vol.03 Mini [UR] [UR]
2 Level 4 monsters
While this card has an Xyz Material attached that was originally WATER, all WATER monsters you control gain 500 ATK. Once per turn, during either player's turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; any card effects that activate in your opponent's Graveyard cannot be activated this turn.

Abyss Dweller is used like a monster version of Necrovalley that's accessible to any Rank-4 spam Deck such as this.

Make sure to toggle your chain from "Auto" to "On" so you can use Abyss Dweller at the start of the opponent's turn where it is most effective. Chaining Abyss Dweller to an effect activation would not negate that effect.

Evilswarm Nightmare
Evilswarm Nightmare
DARK Fiend ★4
ATK 950 / DEF 1950
Fantastic Arc [SR]
2 Level 4 DARK monsters
When your opponent Special Summons a monster(s) (except during the Damage Step): You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; change that Special Summoned monster(s) to face-down Defense Position.

It's a very strong defensive effect since it doesn't target and can be used twice in a single turn, giving the deck a somewhat safe turn 1 play.

If it doesn't get disrupted, there's a pretty high chance of it being able to use its effect since most decks special summons monsters to make strong plays.

Wee Witchs Apprentice
Wee Witchs Apprentice
DARK Spellcaster
ATK 1400 / DEF 2
Arms of Giant [R]
2 DARK monsters
All DARK monsters on the field gain 500 ATK/DEF, also all LIGHT monsters on the field lose 400 ATK/DEF. If this card is destroyed by battle or card effect: You can target 1 DARK monster in your GY; add it to your hand. You can only use this effect of “Wee Witch's Apprentice” once per turn.

Wee Witch's Apprentice can be a useful addition to a Blackwing deck in Duel Links. Its effect to boost the ATK and DEF of all DARK monsters on the field can be beneficial for Blackwings, which are mostly DARK attribute monsters. The effect to retrieve a DARK monster from the GY can also be useful for recovery or setting up plays.

Link Disciple
Link Disciple
LIGHT Cyberse
ATK 500 / DEF 1
Link Revolution [R]
1 Level 4 or lower Cyberse monster
You can Tribute 1 monster this card points to; draw 1 card, then place 1 card from your hand on the bottom of the Deck. You can only use this effect of "Link Disciple" once per turn.

Used as Filter Draw by tributing 1 monster this card points to; usually used to get rid of Knightmare Corruptor Iblee that was special summoned to your field by the opponent.

Other Cards Option

Other Blackwings

Blackwing - Kalut the Moon Shadow
Blackwing - Kalut the Moon Shadow
DARK Winged Beast ★3
ATK 1400 / DEF 1000
Stars of Synchro [SR]
During either player's Damage Step, when a "Blackwing" monster you control is attacking or being attacked: You can send this card from your hand to the Graveyard; that monster gains 1400 ATK until the end of this turn.

Boost 1400 ATK for Blackwing monster when attack or being attacked on both players' turn which can helps to get rid of some Big Monsters or OTK your opponent.

Blackwing - Pinaki the Waxing Moon
Blackwing - Pinaki the Waxing Moon
DARK Winged Beast ★3
ATK 1200 / DEF 1000
Crow Hogan Lvl 35 [UR]
Cannot be used as a Synchro Material, except for the Synchro Summon of a "Blackwing" Synchro Monster. During the End Phase, if this card is in the Graveyard because it was sent there from the field this turn: You can add 1 "Blackwing" monster from your Deck to your hand, except "Blackwing - Pinaki the Waxing Moon". You can only use this effect of "Blackwing - Pinaki the Waxing Moon" once per turn.

A cheaper alternative compared to Gale. This one can't be special summoned, but you can special summon the level 4 non tuners instead. The search effect is a nice addition, but only activates during end phase, so not really effective at extending current combo plays.

Blackwing - Harmattan the Dust
Blackwing - Harmattan the Dust
DARK Winged Beast ★2
ATK / DEF
Blackstorm Rising [R]
Aerial Assault [R]
If you control a "Blackwing" monster other than "Blackwing - Harmattan the Dust", you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). You can only Special Summon "Blackwing - Harmattan the Dust" once per turn this way. When this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can target 1 other "Blackwing" monster you control; increase this card's Level by that monster's.

Special summonable level 2 tuner with a level changing effect. On its own, this can let you bring something like a Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier, or use it together with Pinaki so you can synchro into Sohaya.

Other Techs

Night Beam
Night Beam
Normal Spell
Cybernetic Rebellion [UR]
Target 1 Set Spell/Trap Card your opponent controls; destroy that target. Your opponent cannot activate the targeted card in response to this card's activation.

Not a quick-play spell like Mystical Space Typhoon, but still pretty strong and useful to have.

Cosmic Cyclone
Cosmic Cyclone
Quick Spell
Galactic Origin [UR]
Selection Box Vol. 01 Mini [UR]
Pay 1000 LP, then target 1 Spell/Trap Card on the field; banish it.

There are going to be times where banishing your opponent's spell/trap is better than destroying them since they might have effects when destroyed. This comes at a cost of 1000 LP, which can be dangerous if you also take another 1000 from Simoon's effect. But the benefits often outweigh the risks.

Offerings to the Doomed
Offerings to the Doomed
Quick Spell
Stardust Acceleration [SR]
Selection Box Vol. 01 mini [SR] [SR]
Target 1 face-up monster on the field; destroy that target, also skip your next Draw Phase.

Black Whirlind already serves as a pretty strong and consistent way to draw the monster cards that you need, so skipping a draw turn is less of an issue compared to most decks. Offerings to the Doomed can be an effective way to stop your opponent's combos since it's a quick-play spell.

When they summon either the lvl 1 tuner or a lvl 3 tuner, set it facedown with a Canadia, Floodgate, or Molehu if you run Elementsabers. Unless they're using Mokuba and have See You Later skill, their field will be clogged when tuner is set face down with Simoon on field.

I take it you took the first turn.
Blackwing is otk based, which mean you need either a trap to respond it, or a monster with quick effect to respond it as you wont survive that turn. Usually they dont have anything after the otk failed. Simply a glass canon
cool deck
Mokuba Kaiba plays it with See You Later.

I'm assuming it's because they can send Simoon back to the hand, use their effect again and get 3 monsters with less than 1600 ATK in their first turn.

Effect can only be used once/turn
you want see you later to either return blackwing monsters to your hand, either someone flipped them facedown, or you can summon, whirlwind, search, see you later (monster you just summoned), special the tuner/monster you need. it's pretty useful since blackwings can special summon themselves as long as you got 1 on the field

I have 2 Simoons and 3 Black Whirlwinds with 3 of all the other Blackwing cards (Bora, Gale, Shura and all the Rs/Ns). Should I get a third Simoon or would 2 Simoons be good enough with 3 Black Whirlwinds?

Simoon is a core card, it allows you a free normal summon and let's you get 2 cards with black whirlwind, the deck suffers without having 3.

How come barely any competitive players use Delta Crow - Anti Reverse? If you have a BW you can just use it during your opponent's end phase to OTK next turn (like a better Cosmic Cyclone). Yet, despite this, people usually run a Hey, Trunade! or Cosmic Cyclones instead.

If I'm running 3 Gale with 3 Simoon, would Vermillion Dragon Mech be a good option over Onimaru the Divine Thunder? I feel like Onimaru is a lot more situational.

You don't need 3 Boras. Harmattan and Armed Wing each do the one of the things Bora does, only better. Better to use the deck space on a Gust or Mistral. Nice card to have 1 or 2 of though.
