U.A.: deck recipe [Dec 15]

Duel Links U.A. deck, U.A. in the meta, how to use U.A. cards.
update 15/12/2021

Overview

“U.A.”, short for “Ultra Athlete”, is an archetype of EARTH Warrior-Type monsters that share the ability of Special Summoning themselves by returning another monster of the same archetype from the field to the hand. There are two types of “U.A.” monsters, the offensive ones (U.A. Mighty Slugger, U.A. Rival Rebounder, U.A. Dreadnought Dunker and U.A. Playmaker) and the defensive ones (U.A. Midfielder, U.A. Perfect Ace, U.A. Goalkeeper, and U.A. Blockbacker); now that all of these monsters have been released, we finally have more options.

How to Use

U.A. Midfielder the “Playmaker”

U.A. Midfielder
U.A. Midfielder
EARTH Warrior ★4
ATK 1200 / DEF 1000
Gaia Genesis [UR]
You can Special Summon this card (from your hand) by returning 1 "U.A." monster you control to the hand, except "U.A. Midfielder". You can only Special Summon "U.A. Midfielder" once per turn this way. During either player's turn: You can target 1 other "U.A." monster you control; return that face-up monster to the hand, then Special Summon 1 "U.A." monster from your hand with a different name from that monster. You can only use this effect of "U.A. Midfielder" once per turn.

The midfielder is the only “U.A.” monster that you can Normal Summon without Tributing, so it’s a very important card. Ideally, you would open with it in your starting hand, but you can always draw it via Draw Sense: Low Level. Normal Summon Midfielder and then switch him out for a Level 5 or higher “U.A.” monster-like U.A. Mighty Slugger or Perfect Ace.

Midfielder’s secondary effect allows you to return another face-up “U.A.” monster to your hand to Special Summon a “U.A.” monster with a different name from your hand. This effect can be used to get around the “once per turn” restriction all “U.A.” monsters have on their primary effect or to simply prevent them from being destroyed by a card like Treacherous Trap Hole.

U.A. Perfect Ace

U.A. Perfect Ace
U.A. Perfect Ace
EARTH Warrior ★5
ATK 1500 / DEF 2500
Valhalla Calling [SR]
You can Special Summon this card (from your hand) by returning 1 "U.A." monster you control to the hand, except "U.A. Perfect Ace". You can only Special Summon "U.A. Perfect Ace" once per turn this way. Once per turn, during your opponent's turn, when a card or effect is activated: You can discard 1 card; negate that activation, and if you do, destroy it (this is a Quick Effect).

Incredibly useful as a turn 1 card so you can disrupt your opponent, preventing their powerful combos, but it's also generally useful throughout the duel.

With the protection of Penalty Box, you only need to worry about removal effects that don't involve battling.

Even though Mighty Slugger can attack safely, Perfect Ace's effect can help prevent dangerous effects that can be used outside of battle phase, especially if it can destroy multiple monsters like Treacherous Trap Hole/Needle Ceiling or when you don't have Midfielder on the field.

U.A. Rival Rebounder

U.A. Rival Rebounder
U.A. Rival Rebounder
EARTH Warrior ★6
ATK 2200 / DEF 2300
Gaia Genesis [R]
Valhalla Calling [R]
You can Special Summon this card (from your hand) by returning 1 "U.A." monster you control to the hand, except "U.A. Rival Rebounder". You can only Special Summon "U.A. Rival Rebounder" once per turn this way. If this card is Special Summoned during your opponent's turn, or Normal Summoned: You can Special Summon 1 "U.A." monster from your hand or Graveyard, except "U.A. Rival Rebounder". You can only use this effect of "U.A. Rival Rebounder" once per turn.

Its revival effect is part of why the deck can work with only 1 copy of certain cards since it lets you re-use them pretty easily.

However, this can only be special summoned during your opponent's turn through Midfielder's effect. You can use it early at the start of your opponent's turn so you can also special summon Perfect Ace or Blockbacker to the field, but it will mean that you can't tag out again with Midfielder's effect for the rest of the turn.

U.A. Dreadnought Dunker

U.A. Dreadnought Dunker
U.A. Dreadnought Dunker
EARTH Warrior ★7
ATK 2500 / DEF 1800
Gaia Genesis [R]
You can Special Summon this card (from your hand) by returning 1 "U.A." monster you control to the hand, except "U.A. Dreadnought Dunker". You can only Special Summon "U.A. Dreadnought Dunker" once per turn this way. If this card attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict piercing battle damage to your opponent. When this card inflicts battle damage to your opponent: You can target 1 card on the field; destroy it.

One of the two main attackers of the deck, the other being Mighty Slugger. This has the highest base ATK in the main deck plus a piercing effect, making it effective against defensive players, or any monster with low defense since you can use Book of Moon on them.

With one activation of the ATK boost from Stadium, it becomes 3000 ATK to compete with other most other high ATK monsters. With Powered Jersey on top of that, Dunker becomes 4000 ATK, which can potentially OTK your opponent through direct attack or 0 def monsters.

U.A. Mighty Slugger

U.A. Mighty Slugger
U.A. Mighty Slugger
EARTH Warrior ★5
ATK 2300 / DEF 700
Gaia Genesis [R]
Valhalla Calling [R]
You can Special Summon this card (from your hand) by returning 1 "U.A." monster you control to the hand, except "U.A. Mighty Slugger". You can only Special Summon "U.A. Mighty Slugger" once per turn this way. If this card attacks, your opponent cannot activate cards or effects until the end of the Damage Step.

When Mighty Slugger declares an attack, your opponent cannot activate cards or effects until the end of the Damage Step. You can use this effect to temporarily disable your opponent’s backrow or to prevent your opponent from negating a Spell/Trap Card using Legendary Six Samurai - Shi En’s effect.

Mighty Slugger is a Level 5 monster, which means it can be Special Summoned from the hand or Graveyard via Feast of the Wild LV5 together with a U.A. Perfect Ace or another copy of Mighty Slugger. Feast of the Wild LV5 does negate the effects of the monsters it Special Summons, but you can still return them to the hand using another “U.A.” monster in your hand and then Special Summon them back to the field.

U.A. Blockbacker

U.A. Blockbacker
U.A. Blockbacker
EARTH Warrior ★7
ATK 1600 / DEF 2700
Valhalla Calling [R]
You can Special Summon this card (from your hand) by returning 1 "U.A." monster you control to the hand, except "U.A. Blockbacker". You can only Special Summon "U.A. Blockbacker" once per turn this way. Once per turn, when your opponent Special Summons a monster(s): You can change their battle positions, and if you do, negate their effects.

Similar to Perfect Ace, this is a powerful defensive effect that's best on turn 1, especially since this doesn't require discarding a card.

Compared to Perfect Ace, not being able to destroy a monster can be useful since they might have good effects when destroyed, like Cyber Dragon Nova, Spiritual Beast Tamer Winda, etc.

U.A. Stadium to Search and Boost the ATK

U.A. Stadium
U.A. Stadium
Field Spell
Gaia Genesis [SR]
Selection Box Vol. 02 [SR]
If a "U.A." monster is Normal Summoned to your side of the field: You can add 1 "U.A." monster from your Deck to your hand. Once per turn, if a "U.A." monster(s) is Special Summoned to your side of the field: All monsters you currently control gain 500 ATK (even if this card leaves the field).

U.A. Stadium is the Field Spell of the archetype and it has two effects: one that activates if a “U.A.” monster is Normal Summoned and one that activates if a “U.A.” monster is Special Summoned.

  • If a "U.A." monster is Normal Summoned to your side of the field: You can add 1 "U.A." monster from your Deck to your hand.

You can Normal Summon U.A. Midfielder or Tribute Summon for any of your higher-level monsters and get a monster to tag them out for right away.

  • Once per turn, if a "U.A." monster(s) is Special Summoned to your side of the field: All monsters you currently control gain 500 ATK (even if this card leaves the field).

Not only the ATK boost stays even if the card is banished by a Cosmic Cyclone or destroyed, but it’s also permanent as long as that monster stays face-up on the field. Use the ATK boost from U.A. Stadium together with Beatdown to quickly overwhelm your opponent.

U.A. Penalty Box is the U.A. Amazoness Onslaught

U.A. Penalty Box
U.A. Penalty Box
Continuous Trap
Gaia Genesis [SR]
At the start of the Damage Step, if your "U.A." monster battles an opponent's monster: You can banish that opponent's monster until your opponent's 2nd End Phase. You can only use this effect of "U.A. Penalty Box" once per turn. You can banish this card from your Graveyard; add 1 "U.A." Spell Card from your Deck to your hand.

A Continuous Trap Card that banishes a monster that battles with a “U.A.” monster at the start of the Damage Step. Sounds familiar?

Penalty Box, unfortunately, cannot Special monsters from the hand and its banishing effect lasts only until the 2nd End Phase of the opponent, but, if it ends up in the Graveyard, you can banish it to add a “U.A.” Spell/Trap Card to your hand (Stadium). The fact that you can banish Penalty Box from the Graveyard means that you’re free to run Treacherous Trap Hole in this Deck.

U.A. Powered Jersey

U.A. Powered Jersey
U.A. Powered Jersey
Equip Spell
Eternal Stream [UR]
Equip only to a "U.A." monster. It gains 1000 ATK and DEF, also if it battles an opponent's monster, any battle damage it inflicts to your opponent is doubled. If the equipped monster destroys a monster by its attack: It can make a second attack during this Battle Phase. During your Standby Phase: Banish the equipped monster. If this card is sent to the Graveyard because the equipped monster returned to the hand: You can return this card to the hand.

Has good potential to OTK your opponent, but it can be a risky play since there is no way to recover the banished card back to your hand.

It's best used on Mighty Slugger since it can attack safely without interruption and disables hand traps. Having some protection from Perfect Ace can also be important.

U.A. Signing Deal

U.A. Signing Deal
U.A. Signing Deal
Normal Spell
Eternal Stream [SR]
Special Summon 1 "U.A." monster from your Deck, but its effects are negated, also it cannot be used as Synchro or Xyz Material for a Summon. Then you lose LP equal to the Level of the monster you Special Summoned by this effect x 300. You can only activate 1 "U.A. Signing Deal" per turn.

Core searcher for the deck and sometimes the starter card of the turn, but it needs to be paired with at least any other U.A. monster so you can start tagging in and out monsters.

With Stadium on the field, you can use this to search for Midfield. Tag out into any other U.A. in your hand and then normal summon the Midfielder to get the search effect.

Extra Decks

Heroic Champion - Excalibur
Heroic Champion - Excalibur
LIGHT Warrior ★4
ATK 2000 / DEF 2000
Eternal Stream [UR]
2 Level 4 Warrior-Type monsters
Once per turn: You can detach 2 Xyz Materials from this card; this card's ATK becomes double its original ATK until your opponent's next End Phase.

Without having to slowly increase ATK through Stadium, this gives the deck quick access to a 4000 ATK monster for a turn so you can get over certain monsters or go for an OTK when you can direct attack.

Number 61: Volcasaurus
Number 61: Volcasaurus
FIRE Dinosaur ★5
ATK 2500 / DEF 1000
Rage of Volcano [UR]
2 Level 5 monsters
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; destroy that opponent's monster, and if you do, inflict damage to your opponent equal half to the destroyed monster's original ATK. This card cannot attack your opponent directly during the turn you activate this effect.

The only level 5 monsters are Perfect Ace and Mighty Slugger. Volcasaurus gives the deck a monster removal that can be used outside of battle phase, but it's only better than Mighty Slugger if you need a 2500 ATK monster, the effect damage is enough to win the duel, or if Mighty Slugger is negated or locked-up with something like Forbidden Chalice / Fiendish Chain.

Number C39: Utopia Ray
Number C39: Utopia Ray
LIGHT Warrior ★4
ATK 2500 / DEF 2000
Infinite Ray [UR]
3 Level 4 LIGHT monsters
You can also Xyz Summon this card by using a "Number 39: Utopia" you control as the Xyz Material. (Xyz Materials attached to that monster also become Xyz Materials on this card.) You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; it gains 500 ATK and 1 monster your opponent controls loses 1000 ATK, until the End Phase. You must have 1000 Life Points or less to activate and to resolve this effect.

If you survive with less than 1000 LP, you can use this to potentially get an OTK if your opponent also controls a monster that's less than 3000 ATK.

Special summon Midfielder with Signing Deal then normal summon another Midfielder from hand to Xyz into Utopia so you can rank it up into Utopia Ray.

Number 39: Utopia
Number 39: Utopia
LIGHT Warrior ★4
ATK 2500 / DEF 2000
Shining Hope [UR]
2 Level 4 monsters
When any player's monster declares an attack: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; negate the attack. When this card is targeted for an attack, while it has no Xyz Materials: Destroy this card.

Mainly to be used to rank up into Utopia Ray for an OTK. But can be a decent stall card if you're desperate. The Midfielders sent to the graveyard can be recovered with Rebounder's effect, but will require the third Midfielder to work.

Gaia Dragon, the Thunder Charger
Gaia Dragon, the Thunder Charger
WIND Dragon ★7
ATK 2600 / DEF 2100
Infinite Ray [SR]
2 Level 7 monsters
You can also Xyz Summon this card by using a Rank 5 or 6 Xyz Monster you control as the Xyz Material. (Xyz Materials attached to that monster also become Xyz Materials on this card.) If this card attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict piercing battle damage to your opponent.

Rival Rebounder’s secondary effect allows you to Special Summon another “U.A.” monster from your hand or Graveyard when he is Special Summoned during the opponent’s turn or Normal Summoned. Special Summon The Tricky by discarding U.A. Penalty Box or a “U.A.” monster you want to Special Summon, and then Tribute it to Summon Rival Rebounder.

Number 70: Malevolent Sin
Number 70: Malevolent Sin
DARK Insect ★4
ATK 2400 / DEF 1200
Photons of Galaxy [SR]
2 Level 4 monsters
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then target 1 monster your opponent controls; banish it until your opponent's next Standby Phase. At the end of the Damage Step, if this card attacked: You can make this card gain 300 ATK, and if you do, increase its Rank by 3.

Useful for when your opponent only has 1 monster on the field. Temporarily banishing them will let you attack directly, and the deck has decent options for OTK through tagging out with Midfielder, Mighty Slugger, or Powered Jersey.

Other Useful Cards

Paleozoic Engine

Paleozoic Canadia
Paleozoic Canadia
Normal Trap
Valiant Souls [UR]
Target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; change it to face-down Defense Position. Once per Chain, when a Trap Card is activated while this card is in your Graveyard: Special Summon this card as a Normal Monster (Aqua-Type/WATER/Level 2/ATK 1200/DEF 0). (This card is NOT treated as a Trap Card.) If Summoned this way, this card is unaffected by monster effects, also banish it when it leaves the field.
Paleozoic Marrella
Paleozoic Marrella
Normal Trap
Valiant Souls [N]
Send 1 Trap Card from your Deck to the Graveyard.

Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack
WIND Machine ★7
ATK 2600 / DEF 2200
Sign of Harpies [UR]
2 Level 7 monsters
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; Special Summon 2 "Mecha Phantom Beast Tokens" (Machine-Type/WIND/Level 3/ATK 0/DEF 0). While you control a Token, this card cannot be destroyed by battle or card effects. Once per turn: You can Tribute 1 "Mecha Phantom Beast" monster, then target 1 card on the field; destroy that target. This card cannot attack during the turn you activate this effect.
Number 98: Antitopian
Number 98: Antitopian
DARK Warrior ★4
ATK 2000 / DEF 2500
Pendulum Genesis [UR]
2 Level 4 monsters
When any player's monster declares an attack: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; change that monster to Defense Position. During either player's turn, while this card is in your Graveyard: You can target 1 "Utopia" monster on the field; Special Summon this card in Defense Position, and if you do, attach that monster to this card as an Xyz Material. You can only use this effect of "Number 98: Antitopian" once per turn.
Adreus, Keeper of Armageddon
Adreus, Keeper of Armageddon
DARK Fiend ★5
ATK 2600 / DEF 1700

Been trying out this deck with beat down. Didn’t do as bad as I thought, it got me all the way up to legendary still. Just had to use more sengans and monster that can be easily special summoned for tribute fodder.

My Aster will be so 🔥 that his rival has to be weakened (yes it's Zane and his Cyber Style nerf) but who cares? Aster is still cool with or without the nerfs. Now that Cyber Style is going to be nerfed, I don't actually have a reason to build this deck anymore.

Played several Fur Hires with my U.A. deck and its always the same situation. If I don't have good traps in turn 1 to stop an OTK then Fur Hire wins but if I survive that first special summoning then Fur Hire loses 100% of the time. All or nothing is a stupid strategy anyways, so U.A. is clearly better. Also, people combining it with SSA, that isn't really working.

You don't necessarily NEED the skill, although it does make the deck more consistent. I use Unknown Synchron (free tribute fodder or tuner for synchro) and The Tricky (has synergy with Penalty Box) and it's still a viable deck. Would probably only move down 1 Tier... if any.

Yeah, "as soon you get a copy of an UR, reset the box".
And then 2 months later you need another UR from the same box for a new meta deck and go "dammit, if only i hadn't reset the box half way through".

I want to try getting two more midfielders to finish this deck. But now I don't know. I am afraid that cyber style will get nerfed so that you cannot tribute with it. The way this deck is now, will it still be good without cyber style? Almost everyone I meet in ranked with this deck uses Zane (the ones with 3 midfielders win more), and when I did see someone using it with another skill, they bricked so hard that it was not even funny. Can this deck be good without cyber style, or should I wait to invest in it more until we get other cards like signing deal? Please help. I don't want to reset the box if there is no hope when it looks like cyber style will probably get hit.

why are you worried? you're already worshipping some meta decks like Masked and Amazon. the interesting wait is when will synchro supports be out because future boxes will surely have them either as main treat or an icing in the cake.

Yeah. I love those two. But I also want more synchro (especially aromage). I am done with U.A. now. I am just worried that I will lose a lot of my fun pvp adventures of dueling against Zane if they hurt the cyber style and people end up using him less. Last night, he was even using toons!
<< Anonymous(Aster lover)

I run a restart version with 3 midfielders. So far I haven’t really bricked at all. Worst case I end up with a hand of traps with dynatherums and midfielders without the heavy hitters. If you’re still on the fence about don’t worry. If you invest in 3 midfielders the deck will have good enough consistency even without cyber style.

Thanks. I have now dueled other characters more to know that it is really 3 midfielders that counts. I am just afraid to invest more because I think this box is cursed for me. 44 packs left for galaxy cyclone, 15-10 for midfielder, 4 for 2nd stadium. I am semi p2w, but this may be too much for me.
