Block Dragon: deck recipe [Nov 9]

Duel Links Block Dragon deck, Block Dragon in the current meta, how to use.
update 09/11/2021

Overview

Block Dragon is a support card for a Rock-Type deck because of its powerful search effect when sent to the grave. Using a deck that plays with a lot of milling, it makes it easier to bring out Block Dragon and synchro'ed away to get up to 3 Rock-Type monsters from the deck, which includes Amano-Iwato so it can disable all of your opponent's monster no matter where it is (hand/field/grave/banish-pile).

How to Play

Gaia Plate the Earth Giant

Gaia Plate the Earth Giant
Gaia Plate the Earth Giant
EARTH Rock ★8
ATK 2800 / DEF 1000
Primal Burst [UR]
You can Special Summon this card by removing from play any 2 Rock-Type monsters in your Graveyard. During your Standby Phase, remove from play 1 Rock-Type monster in your Graveyard, or send this card to the Graveyard. Halve the ATK and DEF of any monster that battles with this card.

Gaia Plate is an easy boss monster to Special Summon. This monster is practically unbeatable in battle due to its ability to debuff enemy monsters, forcing your opponent to spend their removal effects to get rid of Gaia Plate.

The downside is that Gaia Plate can be costly to maintain. Aside from the two Rock monsters you banished to summon Gaia Plate, you'll continuously need to banish Rocks every turn to keep Gaia Plate alive. This fuel can provided by mill engines such as Lightsworns and Volcanic Wall.

Block Dragon

Block Dragon
Block Dragon
EARTH Rock ★8
ATK 2500 / DEF 3000
Guardians of Rock [SR]
Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must be Special Summoned (from your hand or Graveyard) by banishing 3 EARTH monsters from your hand and/or Graveyard, and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways. Rock-Type monsters you control cannot be destroyed, except by battle. If this card is sent from the field to the Graveyard: You can add up to 3 Rock-Type monsters from your Deck to your hand, whose total Levels equal 8. You can only use this effect of "Block Dragon" once per turn.

Block Dragon barely has enough ATK to compete with other boss monsters. But what makes him good is his set of resource gaining effects. After milling Block Dragon banish 3 EARTH monsters from your hand or graveyard to revive it. The best thing to banish is Giant Rex so it revives itself. For the recovery effect when Block Dragon goes to the grave, the best thing to recover are Gaia Plate and Gigantes.

The protection to all Rock monsters makes Block Dragon good for stalling, but your opponent might have non-destruction removal effects as an answer to this, or weaker Rock monsters could just be destroyed by battle.

The graveyard recovery effect still triggers when you use Block Dragon as synchro material, so you can pair him with Glow-Up Bulb to make Vermillion Mech while also regaining some resources.

Glow-Up Bulb

After milling, you should have self-reviving Tuner in the graveyard ready to be summoned on-demand. Revive them as you need for the purpose of Synchro Summoning and climbing.

Glow-Up Bulb
Glow-Up Bulb
EARTH Plant ★1
ATK 100 / DEF 100
Judgement Force [UR]
If this card is in the Graveyard: You can send the top card of your Deck to the Graveyard, and if you do, Special Summon this card. You can only use this effect of "Glow-Up Bulb" once per Duel.

Glow-Up Bulb's self revival cost actually helps you by further milling your deck. This can put an additional resource in your graveyard such as another Tuner for synchro climbing.

Amano-Iwato & Smile World

Amano-Iwato
Amano-Iwato
EARTH Rock ★4
ATK 1900 / DEF 1200
Card Flipper [SR]
Inglorius Bastion Event [SR]
Gong Strong at Lvl 7, 16, and 25 [SR]
Cannot be Special Summoned. Monsters cannot activate their effects, except Spirit monsters. Once per turn, during the End Phase, if this card was Normal Summoned or flipped face-up this turn: Return this card to the hand.

Searchable through Block Dragon's sent to graveyard effect and best used when you have enough ATK to win the game. Amano-Iwato has an incredibly powerful effect that essentially disables any monster effects, preventing your opponent from being able to use their monster's effects even in the hand, banished, or graveyard. This ensures that your opponent can't use any handtraps when you attack directly.

Against decks like Thunder Dragons, Metaphys, or pretty much any deck that relies on monster effects, a single Amano-Iwato straight up cripples their deck, making them unable to play at all.

The main downside of Amano-Iwato is that it goes back to your hand at the end of the turn. However, with "Smile World" skill, Amano-Iwato can remain on the field since the skill prevents Amano-Iwato's activation to return.

Yuya Sakaki
Yuya Sakaki

The card itself is not that important, the main use of this skill is to use it during the turn you summon Amano-Iwato. This makes it so that Amano-Iwato can remain on the field to stop all monster effects from your opponent.

Gigantes & Giant Rex

Gigantes
Gigantes
EARTH Rock ★4
ATK 1900 / DEF 1300
Secrets of the Ancients [SR]
This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card can only be Special Summoned by removing from play 1 EARTH monster in your Graveyard. When this card is destroyed by battle and sent to the Graveyard, destroy all Spell and Trap Cards on the field.

Summon Gigantes as a beater or as Rank-4 material. You can intentionally crash Gigantes into a strong enemy monster just to trigger the backrow wipe effect, allowing your other monsters to attack safely.

Giant Rex
Giant Rex
EARTH Dinosaur ★4
ATK 2000 / DEF 1200
Tyranno Hassleberry [UR]
Tyranno Hassleberry Roaming Event [UR]
Tyranno Hassleberry Unlock Event [UR]
Cannot attack directly. If this card is banished: You can Special Summon this card, and if you do, this card gains 200 ATK for each of your banished Dinosaur monsters. You can only use this effect of "Giant Rex" once per turn.

Giant Rex is the best monster to banish for Block Dragon or Gigantes' summoning. This way Giant Rex revives itself, giving you an additional beater or Rank-4 material.

Lightsworn Engine

The Lightsworn engine's milling is a great way to get Rock monsters into the graveyard where they can activate their effects or be used to summon Gaia Plate and Block Dragon. Since Block Dragon can revive itself, the milling also helps you "fetch" it from the Deck.

Raiden, Hand of the Lightsworn
Raiden, Hand of the Lightsworn
LIGHT Warrior ★4
ATK 1700 / DEF 1000
Judgement Force [SR]
Selection Box Vol.04 [SR]
During your Main Phase: You can send the top 2 cards of your Deck to the Graveyard, then if any "Lightsworn" monsters were sent to the Graveyard by this effect, this card gains 200 ATK until the end of your opponent's turn. You can only use this effect of "Raiden, Hand of the Lightsworn" once per turn. Once per turn, during your End Phase: Send the top 2 cards of your Deck to the Graveyard.

We run Raiden because of his ability to mill during the Main Phase. Being a level-4 Tuner is also a plus since you can easily make high-level Synchros, or you can use Raiden as Rank-4 material.

Charge of the Light Brigade
Charge of the Light Brigade
Normal Spell
Judgement Force [SR]
Selection Box Vol.04 [SR]
Send the top 3 cards of your Deck to the Graveyard; add 1 Level 4 or lower "Lightsworn" monster from your Deck to your hand.

Charge of the Light Brigade gives you a search and sets up your graveyard for free. When you go first you will want to search and set Ryko for its removal effect and even more graveyard set up. Search Raiden and summon him to get another mill during the Main Phase.

Volcanic Wall

Volcanic Wall
Volcanic Wall
Continuous Spell
Axel Brodie at Lvl 45 [UR]
Once per turn, you can send 3 cards from the top of your deck to the Graveyard, and if you do, inflict 250 damages, to your opponent for each Pyro-Type monster sent to the Graveyard by this effect. You cannot declare an attack during the turn you activate this effect.

Volcanic Wall is a self sufficient mill engine; just put it on the field and activate its effect every turn to consistently stack your graveyard. Losing your Battle Phase can be rough but it shouldn't matter much in the early turns, especially when you don't have any powerful monsters on board yet.

Tackle Crusader

Tackle Crusader
Tackle Crusader
EARTH Rock ★4
ATK 1500 / DEF 1800
Yugi Muto [SR]
If this card is sent to the Graveyard: You can activate 1 of these effects.● Target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; change that target to face-down Defense Position.● Target 1 face-up Spell/Trap Card your opponent controls; return that target to the hand. This turn, your opponent cannot activate cards with the same name as the card returned to the hand by this effect.

Tackle Crusader's effect is mostly activated when he is milled, or when used as discard cost to summon Block Dragon. But another way you can activate it is by summoning Tackle Crusader and use him as synchro material. Pair him with Raiden to make the wide pool of Level-8 Synchros.

Revival Golem

Revival Golem
Revival Golem
EARTH Rock ★4
ATK 100 / DEF 2100
Guardians of Rock [R]
The effect of "Revival Golem" can only be used once per turn. When this card is sent from your Deck to the Graveyard: Activate 1 of these effects.
● Special Summon this card from the Graveyard.
● Add this card from the Graveyard to your hand.

Special Summon Revival Golem when it is milled. This is generally better than putting it in your hand because monsters on the field are just more useful to this Deck. You can use it as Xyz material, Synchro material, or to be destroyed by Scrap Dragon. The only reason to put Revival Golem in your hand is to use it as cost for Block Dragon's summoning.

Needlebug Nest

Needlebug Nest
Needlebug Nest
Normal Trap
Land of the Titans [R]
Selection Box Vol. 01 [R]
Send the top 5 cards of your Deck to the Graveyard.

Use this to mill Block Dragon and any other EARTH monster from deck to grave. Special summon Block Dragon and synchro it away so that you can get Block Dragon's search effect to fetch an Amano-Iwato.

Rock Bombardment

Rock Bombardment
Rock Bombardment
Normal Trap
Guardians of Rock [R]
Send 1 Rock-Type monster from your Deck to the Graveyard; inflict 500 damage to your opponent.

The burn damage is a nice bonus, but the main reason we run Rock Bombardment is to mill Rock monsters. As can be seen from your monsters, many of them want to go to the graveyard to activate their effects while others want other Rocks in the graveyard to fuel their summoning.

Extra Decks

Trishula, the Dragon of Icy Imprisonment
Trishula, the Dragon of Icy Imprisonment
WATER Dragon ★9
ATK 2700 / DEF 2000
Arena of Sanctuary [UR]
3 monsters with different names
Must first be either Fusion Summoned using only monsters in your hand and/or field, or Special Summoned (from your Extra Deck) by banishing the above cards you control (in which case you do not use "Polymerization"). If this card was Special Summoned using only monsters that were originally Dragons: You can reveal and banish 3 cards (1 from your Deck, 1 from the top of your opponent's Deck, and 1 from their Extra Deck). You can only use this effect of "Trishula, the Dragon of Icy Imprisonment" once per turn.
Vermillion Dragon Mech
Vermillion Dragon Mech
FIRE Machine ★9
ATK 2700 / DEF 1800
Blazing Rose [UR]
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
Once per turn: You can banish 1 Tuner from your hand, field, or Graveyard, then target 1 card on the field; destroy it. If this Synchro Summoned card is destroyed by card effect and sent to the Graveyard: You can target 1 of your banished Tuners; add it to your hand.

Vermillion Dragon Mech is summoned by Block Dragon with a level-1 Tuner, both being revived by their own effects.

The high amount of Tuners in this deck give you lots of fuel for Vermillion Dragon Mech's removal effect. The best costs to use for this effect are Glow-Up Bulbs after already using their effect.

Scrap Dragon
Scrap Dragon
EARTH Dragon ★8
ATK 2800 / DEF 2000
Valhalla Calling [UR]
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
Once per turn: You can target 1 card you control and 1 card your opponent controls; destroy them. When this card is destroyed by your opponent's card (either by battle or by card effect) and sent to the Graveyard: Target 1 non-Synchro "Scrap" monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon that target.

Summon Scrap Dragon by using Raiden and any of your Level-4 monsters as materials. The you can use the self-reviving Tuners as the monster you destroy on your side. Even if you don't use Scrap Dragon's effect, you can still use it as a decent beater.

Armades, Keeper of Boundaries
Armades, Keeper of Boundaries
LIGHT Fiend ★5
ATK 2300 / DEF 1500
Secrets of the Ancients [UR]
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
If this card attacks or is attacked, your opponent cannot activate cards or effects until the end of the Damage Step.

Armades' effect allows him to attack safely through multiple enemy backrow, so he is a good beater to make if you run Glow-Up Bulb.

Assault Blackwing - Onimaru the Divine Thunder
Assault Blackwing - Onimaru the Divine Thunder
DARK Winged Beast ★12
ATK 3000 / DEF 2000
Aerial Assault [R]
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
If this card is Synchro Summoned using a "Blackwing" monster as Material, it is treated as a Tuner while face-up on the field. Cannot be destroyed by card effects. You can target 1 "Blackwing" monster in your Graveyard; this card's Level becomes the same as that monster's. You can only use this effect of "Assault Blackwing - Onimaru the Divine Thunder" once per Duel. If this card that was Synchro Summoned using only Synchro Monsters attacks, this card gains 3000 ATK during the Damage Step only.

Summon Onimaru with Raiden and Block Dragon as materials. It won't get its ATK boost effect but it's still a 3000 ATK beater with effect destruction immunity.

Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis
Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis
LIGHT Dragon ★8
ATK 3000 / DEF 2500
Infinite Ray [UR]
2 Level 8 monsters
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; Tribute any number of monsters from your hand and/or your side of the field (minimum 1), then destroy an equal number of cards on the field.

Make Heliopolis using a combination of Block Dragon and Gaia Plate as materials. With sufficient cost, Heliopolis can destroy everything on your opponent's board resulting in an easy OTK.

Abyss Dweller
Abyss Dweller
WATER Sea Serpent ★4
ATK 1700 / DEF 1400
Photons of Galaxy [UR]
2 Level 4 monsters
While this card has an Xyz Material attached that was originally WATER, all WATER monsters you control gain 500 ATK. Once per turn, during either player's turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; any card effects that activate in your opponent's Graveyard cannot be activated this turn.

Abyss Dweller is used like a monster version of Necrovalley that can be made with any two Level-4s. The Graveyard lock only affects your opponent so your graveyard combos won't be affected.

Make sure to toggle your chain from "Auto" to "On" so you can use Abyss Dweller at the start of the opponent's turn where it is most effective. Chaining Abyss Dweller to an effect activation would not negate that effect.

Number 70: Malevolent Sin
Number 70: Malevolent Sin
DARK Insect ★4
ATK 2400 / DEF 1200
Photons of Galaxy [SR]
2 Level 4 monsters
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then target 1 monster your opponent controls; banish it until your opponent's next Standby Phase. At the end of the Damage Step, if this card attacked: You can make this card gain 300 ATK, and if you do, increase its Rank by 3.

Malevolent Sin is an anti-Xyz tech. Summon Malevolent Sin and use its effect to temporarily banish an enemy Xyz monster. The Xyz monster will return with no materials attached to it.

Steelswarm Roach
Steelswarm Roach
DARK Fiend ★4
ATK 1900 / DEF 0
Photons of Galaxy [SR]
2 Level 4 monsters
During either player's turn, when a Level 5 or higher monster would be Special Summoned: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; negate the Special Summon, and if you do, destroy it.

Useful for when you can't summon Amano-Iwato. Giant Rex and Gigantes can be special summoned so it can be somewhat easy to make a rank 4 XYZ. This card helps prevent powerful boss monsters from being summoned.

Basically summon Amato activate skill and thats it. It is also worth noting that sometimes you need to mill your deck and if you are lucky you can summon on your first turn bulb and block dragon , synchro summon and then search for amato. Either way a very fun deck that is also very viable in the current meta. Managed to get kog in around 60 wins.

It‘s actually based on plastic construction toys, such as lego for instance. And those existed way before Minecraft was a thing.

It's kinda hard to play this deck in Silver, because many players also use 30 cards. Tackle Crusher would be your key to disrupt your opponent's tactics. Then if you are lucky, you will draw Block Dragon to seal your victory.

So find a backup deck. This is a good higher tier deck, maybe try some eldritch abomination, like the ones usually favoured in this lower tiers.
