Cipher: deck recipe [Sept 27]

Duel Links Cipher deck, Cipher in the current meta, how to use.
update 27/09/2022

Overview

Ciphers are an Xyz-focused deck with good OTK potential by using Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon as the main boss monster. It can temporarily take control of your opponent's monster and give it an attack boost to help as a beater. Together with the use of the skill, it can win pretty easily if your opponent only controls 1 monster, or even 2 if even 1 of them has lower than 3000 ATK.

However, they lack some consistency to make a reliable play all the time since they need specific cards to start, but they have decent follow-up options if it's not an OTK.

How to Play

Cipher Monsters

Cipher Biplane
Cipher Biplane
LIGHT Machine ★6
ATK 1000 / DEF 2000
Phantom of Rebellion [SR]
Once per turn: You can target 2 "Cipher" monsters you control; their Levels become 8 until the end of this turn. You can only use each of the following effects of "Cipher Biplane" once per turn. If a "Cipher" monster(s) is Normal or Special Summoned to your field (except during the Damage Step): You can Special Summon this card from your hand. If this card is destroyed by battle or card effect and sent to the GY: You can banish this card from your GY; add 1 "Cipher" monster from your Deck to your hand.

This is the card that lets you Xyz into Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon because of its effect, and you can special summon this either through its own effect or Twin Raptor.

If it gets destroyed when it's on the field before you get to Xyz, you can search for another Cipher monster. If you can normal summon another Cipher, you can search for another Biplane to restart the combo. If your opponent has an extra deck monster on the field, then you can search for Twin Raptor if you haven't used its effect so you can special summon another Biplane from the deck.

Cipher Twin Raptor
Cipher Twin Raptor
LIGHT Machine ★4
ATK 1600 / DEF 800
Phantom of Rebellion [R]
If your opponent controls a face-up monster that was Special Summoned from the Extra Deck and you control no monsters, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). You can discard 1 card; Special Summon 1 "Cipher" monster from your hand or Deck, also you cannot Special Summon monsters for the rest of this turn, except "Cipher" monsters. You can only use this effect of "Cipher Twin Raptor" once per turn.

This is the combo starter of the deck since it can special summon monsters from the deck. With its effect, you can special summon Biplane so you can Xyz into a rank 8 to make Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon.

The summoning restriction means that this play mostly just leads to Biplane so you can bring out Galaxy-Eyes, but you can also go with another level 4 if you simply need monsters on the field to block attacks or if you think your monsters won't get destroyed.

If you get Cipher Wing, you can instead go into a rank 4 like Gear Gigant X for a searcher or Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon for a beater.

Cipher Wing
Cipher Wing
LIGHT Machine ★4
ATK 1400 / DEF 1200
Phantom of Rebellion [R]
If you control a "Cipher" monster, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). You can Tribute this card; increase the Levels of all "Cipher" monsters you control by 4 until the end of this turn.

Essentially a filler in the deck to help with making a rank 4 or 8. Its effect is only good if you have 2 other level 4 "Cipher" monsters, which is very situational and rare.

Cipher Mirror Knight

Cipher Mirror Knight
Cipher Mirror Knight
LIGHT Warrior ★4
ATK 0 / DEF 0
Phantom of Rebellion [R]
When a "Cipher" monster you control is destroyed by battle and sent to your Graveyard: You can discard this card; send 1 card from your hand or field to the Graveyard, and if you do, Special Summon that destroyed monster. During the End Phase, if this card is in the Graveyard because it was sent there this turn: You can add 1 "Cipher" card from your Deck to your hand. You can only use this effect of "Cipher Mirror Knight" once per turn.

A defensive card that can act as a safety net to potentially prevent some OTK, but it's also a searcher to help make a play for your next turn.

If you have Raptor with Biplane/Wing in hand, you can use Raptor to special summon Mirror Knight from your deck, then use Biplane/Wing to Xyz into Cipher Dragon. When you want to activate Cipher Dragon's effect, use Mirror Knight as the material to detach so that you can get its search effect during your end phase.

Searching for Raptor can often be a safe play since it can be special summoned or normal summoned. Otherwise, searching for another Mirror Knight can be good too if you think your monsters are going to be destroyed by battle and you have a card to discard.

Wightprincess

Wightprincess
Wightprincess
DARK Zombie ★3
ATK 1600 / DEF 0
Energy of Gigarays [R]
This card’s name becomes "Skull Servant" while it is in the Graveyard. If this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can send 1 "Wightprince" from your Deck to the Graveyard. During either player's turn: You can send this card from your hand or field to the Graveyard; all monsters currently on the field lose ATK and DEF equal to their own Level/Rank x 300, until the end of this turn.

Full Armor Photon Dragon & Cipher Blade Dragon

Both Galaxy-Eyes Xyz monsters shared similar effect which has removal effect regardless monster or spell/trap. However, Full Armor Photon Dragon will only able to destroy Face-Up card whereas Cipher Blade does for either.

Both of these card can be Xyz Summon by using a "Galaxy-Eyes" Xyz Monster means that you can Xyz Summon directly onto Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon which will gives them max. 3 materials for activating their effect.

Galaxy-Eyes Full Armor Photon Dragon
Galaxy-Eyes Full Armor Photon Dragon
LIGHT Dragon ★8
ATK 3000 / DEF 2500
Heart of Xyz [UR]
3 Level 8 monsters
You can also Xyz Summon this card by using a "Galaxy-Eyes" Xyz Monster you control as the Xyz Material, except "Galaxy-Eyes Full Armor Photon Dragon". (Xyz Materials attached to that monster also become Xyz Materials on this card.) Once per turn: You can target up to 2 Equip Cards equipped to this card; attach them to this card as Xyz Materials. Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then target 1 face-up card your opponent controls; destroy it.
Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Blade Dragon
Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Blade Dragon
LIGHT Dragon ★9
ATK 3200 / DEF 2800
Heart of Xyz [SR]
3 Level 9 monsters
You can also Xyz Summon this card by using a Rank 8 "Galaxy-Eyes" Xyz Monster you control as the Xyz Material. (Xyz Materials attached to that monster also become Xyz Materials on this card.) Cannot be used as an Xyz Material for an Xyz Summon. Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then target 1 card on the field; destroy it. If this Xyz Summoned card is destroyed by your opponent's attack or card effect and sent to your Graveyard: You can target 1 "Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon" in your Graveyard; Special Summon it.

Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon

Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon
Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon
LIGHT Dragon ★8
ATK 3000 / DEF 2500
Phantom of Rebellion [UR]
2 Level 8 monsters
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; monsters you control cannot attack your opponent directly for the rest of this turn, except this card, also take control of the targeted monster until the End Phase, but while this effect is applied, it has its effects negated, its ATK becomes 3000, also its name becomes "Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon".

3000 ATK beater with an effect that lets you temporarily control your opponent's monster. Increasing the ATK to 3000 just means that you can choose a low ATK monster your opponent controls to help as a beater.

Its effect works best if your opponent has at least 2 monsters on the field. If your opponent has another 3000 ATK monster on the field, you can crash it with the one you took control of. If your opponent has another low ATK monster then you can potentially still OTK since the monster you took control of isn't attacking directly.

Alternatively, if your opponent has a level 4 monster on the field and you made Galaxy-Eyes without having to use Twin Raptor's effect, you can use your opponent's monster as an Xyz material with another level 4 monster you control.

Number 68: Sanaphond the Sky Prison

Number 68: Sanaphond the Sky Prison
Number 68: Sanaphond the Sky Prison
DARK Rock ★8
ATK 2100 / DEF 2700
Infinite Ray [R]
Fantastic Arc [R]
2 Level 8 monsters
Gains 100 ATK and DEF for each monster in the GYs. Once per turn: You can detach 1 material from this card; until the end of your opponent's next turn, this card cannot be destroyed by card effects, also neither player can Special Summon monsters from the GYs.

Sanaphond's below average ATK stat can easily be mitigated by its inherent
stat boost putting it near 3000 ATK, especially if there's already some graveyard setup on both sides. Additionally, Sanaphond is able to protect itself from effect destruction while also locking out revival effect. This won't be a problem for you because this Deck doesn't run any revival.

Techs

Monster Reborn

Monster Reborn
Monster Reborn
Normal Spell
5th Anniversary Campaign [UR]
Target 1 monster in either player's Graveyard; Special Summon it.

Works as a combo extender so you can potentially make 2 Xyz in a turn or to bring back a boss monster from either grave.

Lightning Vortex

Lightning Vortex
Lightning Vortex
Normal Spell
Sign of Harpies [SR]
Discard 1 card; destroy all face-up monsters your opponent controls.

Discard Mirror Knight to wipe out all monsters your opponent controls, then search out "Cipher" monster by Mirror Knight's effect.

Mystical Space Typhoon & Galaxy Cyclone

Important to have so you don't get stopped when trying to Xyz. Either bring this or something like Forbidden Lance.

Mystical Space Typhoon
Mystical Space Typhoon
Quick Spell
Antinomic Theory [UR]
Selection Box Vol.03 Mini [UR]
Target 1 Spell/Trap Card on the field; destroy that target.
Galaxy Cyclone
Galaxy Cyclone
Normal Spell
Gaia Genesis [UR]
Selection Box Vol. 02 Mini [UR]
Special Set Bundle Sale [UR]
Target 1 Set Spell/Trap Card on the field; destroy it. During your Main Phase, except the turn this card was sent to the Graveyard: You can banish this card from your Graveyard, then target 1 face-up Spell/Trap Card on the field; destroy it. You can only use this effect of "Galaxy Cyclone" once per turn.

Other Card Options

Guardian of Order

Guardian of Order
Guardian of Order
LIGHT Warrior ★8
ATK 2500 / DEF 1200
Sera (DSOD) at Lvl 21, 30, and 33 [SR]
Kite Tenjo Roaming Event [SR]
If you control 2 or more LIGHT monsters, you can Special Summon this card from your hand. You can only control 1 "Guardian of Order".

Useful beater that you can summon before Xyz summoning. You can get 2 monsters on the field through Wing or Biplane's special summoning effect, but this won't work with Raptor since it has a summoning restriction.

Kiteroid

Kiteroid
Kiteroid
WIND Machine ★1
ATK 200 / DEF 400
Card Trader [SR]
Activate when you discard this card from your hand during damage calculation after a direct attack. Any Battle Damage you would receive from that direct attack becomes 0. Only once, if you remove this card from the game when it is in your Graveyard, any Battle Damage you would receive from a direct attack becomes 0.

Prevents OTKs similar to Sphere Kuriboh. Keep it in your hand to avoid damage from a direct attack, then later banish it from the graveyard to avoid damage from another direct attack.

Cipher Etranger

Cipher Étranger
Cipher Étranger
LIGHT Spellcaster ★4
ATK 0 / DEF 0
Heart of Xyz [N]
While this card is in your hand or Graveyard: You can target 1 "Cipher" Xyz Monster you control; attach this card to it as Xyz Material. If this card is sent to the Graveyard: You can add 1 "Cipher" Spell/Trap Card from your Deck to your hand. You can only use 1 "Cipher Étranger" effect per turn, and only once that turn.

Can be attached to Cipher Dragon or Cipher Blade Dragon as Xyz Material directly from your hand or even Graveyard which will give your Xyz monsters more chances to use their effects. Not only that, Cipher Etranger will allows you to search out Cipher Interference in this case while it is sent to the Graveyard.

But keep it mind that, you can only activate 1 of each it's effect once per turn.

Dyson Sphere Combo

Arcjet Lightcraft
Arcjet Lightcraft
LIGHT Machine ★9
ATK 0 / DEF 2100
Darkness Gimmick [R]
If you control no monsters, you can Normal Summon this card without Tributing. If this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can target 1 Level 8 or lower Machine monster in your GY; Special Summon it in Defense Position, and if you do, its Level becomes 9, also negate its effects. You can only use this effect of "Arcjet Lightcraft" once per turn. You cannot Special Summon monsters from the Extra Deck, except Machine Xyz Monsters.

Works as a comeback card since it's like a 1 card Xyz enabler to become level 9: Dyson Sphere.

Because it has a summoning restriction, you can't really follow it up with the usual Cipher plays to make Galaxy-Eyes, but you can make Gear Gigant X if you are able to make a rank 4.

Cipher Interference & Double Exposure

Cipher Interference
Cipher Interference
Continuous Spell
Heart of Xyz [R]
During damage calculation, if your "Cipher" monster battles, while another monster with its same name is on the field: You can double the ATK of your battling "Cipher" monster until the end of the Battle Phase. You can only use this effect of "Cipher Interference" once per turn.

Since Cipher Dragon's effect can take control 1 of your opponent's monster to your Field and that monster's name will become Cipher Dragon, you can synergy with Cipher Interference to boost up those Cipher Dragons when they battle, note that this effect does applied on direct attack too.

Double Exposure
Double Exposure
Continuous Spell
Heart of Xyz [N]
You can target 2 Level 6 or lower monsters with the same name on the field; their Levels are doubled. At the start of the Battle Phase: You can target 1 "Cipher" monster you control; choose 1 other face-up monster on the field, and its name becomes that "Cipher" monster's, until the End Phase. You can only use each effect of "Double Exposure" once per turn.

Similar effect to Cipher Wing which can double your Level 4 Cipher monster to Level 8 without tributing cost. Double Exposure's second effect also a good synergy with Cipher Interference due to the effect that make another monster becomes same as 1 of your "Cipher" monster you control.

Book Of Moon

Book of Moon
Book of Moon
Quick Spell
Chaotic Soldiers [UR]
Selection Box Vol.04 [UR]
Target 1 face-up monster on the field; change that target to face-down Defense Position.

Very strong and versatile card since it can be used to disrupt your opponent or to dodge cards like Karma Cut / Floodgate Trap Hole by targeting your own monster.

Lightning Vortex

Lightning Vortex
Lightning Vortex
Normal Spell
Sign of Harpies [SR]
Discard 1 card; destroy all face-up monsters your opponent controls.

Helps you OTK your opponent since you can use the skill on Cipher Dragon to become 4000 ATK to win quickly/easily.

Other Extra Decks

Number 9: Dyson Sphere
Number 9: Dyson Sphere
LIGHT Machine ★9
ATK 2800 / DEF 3000
Darkness Gimmick [UR]
2 Level 9 monsters
Once per Battle Step, during your opponent's turn, if this card with Xyz Material is attacked: Negate the attack (this is a Quick Effect). When this card is targeted for an attack while it has no Xyz Materials: You can target 2 monsters in your Graveyard; attach those targets to this card as Xyz Materials. During your Main Phase 1: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; this card can attack your opponent directly this turn. Your opponent must control a monster with higher ATK than this card for you to activate and to resolve this effect.

Great as a blocker because of its high ATK and DEF as well as its effect, but it can be easily removed by a lot of card removal effects so it's not a reliable monster to stall for long.

Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis
Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis
LIGHT Dragon ★8
ATK 3000 / DEF 2500
Infinite Ray [UR]
2 Level 8 monsters
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; Tribute any number of monsters from your hand and/or your side of the field (minimum 1), then destroy an equal number of cards on the field.

Summonable when you can get Biplane to the field without using Raptor's effect. Heliopolis is a pretty strong boss monster since it gives you multiple card removals and it can still attack after using it, but it's not an easy OTK since you can't use the skill on it.

Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon
Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon
DARK Dragon ★4
ATK 2500 / DEF 2000
Phantom of Rebellion [UR]
2 Level 4 monsters
You can detach 2 Xyz Materials from this card, then target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; its ATK becomes half its current ATK, and if it does, this card gains that lost ATK.

Can help beat over just about any monster, as long as they can be targeted. The ATK boost isn't even temporary, so it's essentially a 3000+ ATK monster on the field if it doesn't get negated.

Gear Gigant X
Gear Gigant X
EARTH Machine ★4
ATK 2300 / DEF 1500
Voltage of the Metal [UR]
2 Level 4 Machine-Type monsters
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; add 1 Level 4 or lower Machine-Type monster from your Deck or Graveyard to your hand. When this card leaves the field: You can target 1 Level 3 or lower "Geargia" monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon that target.

Useful for turn 1 so you can search for a card to help Xyz next turn.

Add Cipher Soldier to strenghthen this deck againts Heroes.

I like the Dyson Sphere variant. It's not necessarily better but it's at least different compared to the Photon deck which is arguably better in every single way than the standard Cipher deck.

Why would you play this build over Photons? No search skill for you. Get rekt by all the degenerate backrow running around.

I was wondering the same. Is there any reason to play this instead of Photons? Maybe it's cheaper but is there another reason to do it?

Photons cannot combo with Cipher Soldier.

This deck is super fun! I replaced BoM and TTH with floodgate and canadia.
