If you control 2 or more face-up "Six Samurai" monsters, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). Your opponent can only activate 1 Spell/Trap Card each turn. If this card would be destroyed, you can destroy a face-up "Six Samurai" monster you control instead.

  • Can use other face-up “Six Samurai” monster you control as substitute should this card be destroyed.


  • Can be quite challenging to Special Summon.
  • Requires 2 monsters for a Tribute summon.

Tips, Related Cards, Rulings

  • This card goes along very well with The Six Samurai - Yaichi, by Normal summoning Yaichi x 2 or another Six Samurai monster, you can Special Summon Great Shogun Shien from your hand. Furthermore, Yaichi can proceed to destroy your opponent’s set Spell/Trap x 1 per turn.
  • When the situation no longer requires Yaichi (or any other Six Samurai monsters), you can allow them to be destroyed and sent to the graveyard, to setup enough Six Samurai monsters to be banished, in order to Special Summon Enishi, Shien’s Chancellor.
  • You can use powerful Spell/Traps, such as Enemy Controller, Super Rush Headlong, Wall of Disruption, Mirror Wall to protect your Six Samurai monsters, since they cannot attack if they used their effects.

Archetype Synergy

These are the Six Samurai that has their own set of effects for different purposes. Amongst those who stand out are Zanji and Yaichi, where Zanji destroys the monster it battles after the Damage Step, and Yaichi can have a devastating synergy with Great Shogun Shien, whereby Yaichi destroys 1 set Spell/Trap once per turn, and Great Shogun Shien limits opponent’s Spell/Trap activation, effectively crippling your opponent’s backrow.

Speed Summon

If your “Six Samurai” monster was destroyed by battle, you can Special summon 2 “Six Samurai” monsters from your hand, then you can Special Summon Great Shogun Shien from your hand.

If you summoned a level 4 or lower “Six Samurai” monster, you can use this card to make a duplicate of that monster, then Special Summon Great Shogun Shien from your hand.

Coupled with “Aroma Strategy” Skill, you can use Hazy Flame Sphynx’s effect to Special Summon Great Shogun Shien from your hand or graveyard.

Backrow Starvation

These are the combos that synergizes with Great Shogun Shien’s effect, together they effectively cripple your opponent’s backrow and limits their choices of Spell/Trap activation.

I play synchro shien with this. Synchro shien negate a trap and after that opponent play another trap. Great shogun allows play only one spell or trap? Am i wrong?

It's not bugged, you negated the ACTIVATION of your opponent's S/T with the synchro, so it's as if your opponent has not activated any this turn. As a result, your opponent can activate another one.

I don't agree with people saying that because it was negated they can still use a second spell. They still activated it and even though it was negated it was still activated. This is just a case of sloppy coding that makes it a shame as it's pointless using them together.

Negating activation = No activation
I just had this issue and came to this site to see some reviews and even emailed Konami about it. I had Shi En and Shogun on the field. Alexis was able to use machine angel Absolute ritual TWICE. I negated it the first time with both monsters on my field. I’m waiting on a response from Konami about this issue because this has to be a bug. The card itself says “Your opponent can only activate 1 Spell/Trap Card each turn.”

Shi En and Shogun effects do not stack
Your opponent only activated one card, because the first one was negated with Shi en

I've had the same problem and can confirm it's bugged Shi En and Shogun both on the field vs Cyber Angels as they will spam multiple spell cards during the same turn. All I can conclude is that Shi En is nullifying the ability of Shogun incorrectly.
I played this card againts an Amazoness deck... My opponent played Trap Hole against one of my other monter... and on the same turn, he managed to activate Assault Amazoness... 2 trap cards during the same turn. Why?

I assume you meant Amazoness Onslaught. It can be used because activating a Trap is not the same thing as activating the EFFECT of a Trap that's already face-up on the field. Also, I think the banishing effect is Continuous, which does not activate.
This guy is going to be strong as hell cause of the new box. You could get 3 Six Sams out in one turn...

How do i get 3 more dupes, it seems that i could only get one
his effect can heavily counter spellbook, if summoned at early game
Konami are going crazy with their summon without a cost cards in these last couple of decks. If you aren't playing Gladiator beasts or Six Samurai you may as well not be playing.

Just trying to sell their new boxes i suppose but that just sucks.

I climb to Legend with Six Sams. But after that you won't climb higher.
Six Sams Suck.
I had this card in my first pack, reset the box and had it in my 11th pack. Is it worthing reseting the box for a third one or 2 are enough ?

2 is more than enough. Actually Enishi is better than this card, but if you want to put Shien in deck, you can throw in 1 Shien and 1 Enishi to your deck
Card ok! However, is out meta.
Haze Flame is the best cards this box.

Not really. They are missing a lot of their support cards. Grandmaster, cunning of the 6, smoke signal musakani Magatama. But of course if all that was in there then they would be OP
