I'm a bit confused about its effect,I'm assuming its effect is only valid while on the field. But unlike most cards it does not specify this. How exactly does it work?

Unless the card said otherwise, monster effect only valid on the field while face-up. You could say that activation condition overwrite the basic ruling on how the effect monster works.

Perhaps the least useful among its brethren, specially since it requires 1 tribute.

this card is useless if your enemie plays cards which can switch the position of this monster... i just played a match against an npc who played a trap card to switch my monsters... lost all my monsters on the field
