Attack is pretty decent for a monster that requires 1 Tribute.
It can add a monster from your deck to your hand.

Cons

Has no defense which makes it susceptible to attacks when switched to defense position.
Only a Level 4 or lower monster from your deck can be added to your hand.

Goblin Zombie

When Goblin Zombie is sent from the field to the Graveyard, you can search Vampire Dragon from your Deck and add it to your hand since it has less than 1200 defense. You can also use it as a tribute for Vampire Dragon and its effect will activate.

I am missing the effect proc timing a lot, but have no idea what this means. The card doesn't specify how the card goes to the grave or when it is sent there. I understand why the effect wouldn't work if I use it as XYS material(not sent directly from field to grave), but why can't I use it as tribute material to activate it's effect. (many of the monsters I summon by tributing the card have summon effects; could this be messing with my timing?)

Yes. This card's effect is a "When...You Can" effect, which means the condition to activate its effect must be the last thing to happen.

If you use it as Tribute, even if it's Tribute Summoning a vanilla, this card would miss the timing, because the last thing to happen is not this card going to the Graveyard, but the Tribute Summoned monster entering the field.

Keep in mind that i'll miss its timing activation a lot, especially by being used as a tribute.

It doesn't have to be used as a tribute to proc its effect.

effect won't trigger if you tribute summon set.
you must tribute summon face up for it's effect to trigger.

i tried tribute summon face down and it does nothing.

Well, duh. Of course. That's called a Tribute Set, not a Tribute Summon.

Because it's a Level 6 monster, needs to be Tribute Summoned for its effect to activate, and requires it being sent to the Graveyard from the field.

Basically, way too slow.
