Sylvan: deck recipe [Nov 17]

Duel Links Sylvan deck, Sylvan in the meta, Sylvan Skill.
update 17/11/2021

Overview

This plant based deck revolves around excavating cards from the top of your deck, and if Sylvan monsters get excavated they have effects that can be activated.

Most Sylvan deck lists you’ll see will only run a few spells/traps because your strategy will be to clear your opponent’s backrow and monsters with the help of your Sylvan monsters and to consistently excavate Sylvan monsters you need to run a lot of them.

How to Play

Sylvan Princessprout

Sylvan Princessprout
Sylvan Princessprout
LIGHT Plant ★1
ATK 100 / DEF 100
Chaotic Soldiers [UR]
You can only activate each effect of "Sylvan Princessprout" once per turn.

● You can Tribute this card; excavate the top card of your Deck, send it to the Graveyard, then you can place 1 "sprout" monster in your Graveyard on top of your Deck.
● If this card is excavated from the Deck and sent to the Graveyard by a card effect: You can declare a Level from 1 to 8; Special Summon this card from the Graveyard, and if you do, it becomes that Level.

What level to special summon this depends on what you have on your field/hand. If you get turn 1 and want to make some plays, it's often better to special summon as a level 1 so you can potentially special summon another level 1 sylvan from your deck to make Princessprite.

Orea (rank 7) is a pretty good monster to bring out if you want to get some card removals on turn 2 or higher, but you'll need to have Sagequoia on the field, which can be special summoned with its own effect, Princessprite, or Rose Lover.

Princessprout's first effect is mostly useful in the later turns after several milling, including a Cherubsprout in your grave, and only worth using if you can follow it up with another excavating effect.

Sylvans Marshalleaf & Komushroomo

Sylvan Komushroomo
Sylvan Komushroomo
FIRE Plant ★2
ATK 100 / DEF 2100
Rampage of the Forest [SR]
When this card is flipped face-up: You can choose a number from 1 to 5, then excavate that many cards from the top of your Deck, send any excavated Plant-Type monsters to the Graveyard, also place the other cards on the bottom of your Deck in any order. If this card is excavated from the Deck and sent to the Graveyard by a card effect: You can target 1 Spell/Trap Card on the field; destroy that target.
Sylvan Marshalleaf
Sylvan Marshalleaf
WATER Plant ★3
ATK 1500 / DEF 1200
Rampage of the Forest [R]
When this card is Normal Summoned: You can choose either 1 or 2, then excavate that many cards from the top of your Deck, send any excavated Plant-Type monsters to the Graveyard, also place the other cards on the bottom of your Deck in any order. If this card is excavated from the Deck and sent to the Graveyard by a card effect: You can target 1 monster on the field; destroy that target.

Low-Leveled Sylvans excavate only once with their effects, Komushroom when he is flipped face-up and Marshalleaf when he is summoned making them less useful to keep on the field. But being easier to put on the field makes them good opening plays. The best opening play would be to set Komushroom and wait for your opponent to attack into it and excavate 5 cards from your deck.
Additionally, these two monsters have the best effects when they are excavated. Komushroom destroys a spell/trap card on the field while Marshalleaf destroys a monster, and chaining them together with other Sylvan effects makes them impossible to negate.

Level 1 Sylvans

Sylvan Cherubsprout
Sylvan Cherubsprout
LIGHT Plant ★1
ATK 100 / DEF 100
Chaotic Soldiers [N]
When this card is Special Summoned: You can choose either 1 or 2, then excavate that many cards from the top of your Deck, send any excavated Plant-Type monsters to the Graveyard, also place the other cards on the bottom of your Deck in any order. If this card is excavated from the Deck and sent to the Graveyard by a card effect: You can Special Summon 1 Level 1 Plant-Type monster from your Deck. You can only use this effect of "Sylvan Cherubsprout" once per turn.

You can somewhat reliably put this to the top of your deck by using Princessprout's effect.

If you want to special summon a monster from your hand, you can special summon Rose Lover from your deck and make Princessprite with another monster. Then activate Princessprite's effect for more excavating by using Rose Lover as the material.

But if you simply need more excavating, then special summon Peaskeeper instead. Glow-Up Bulb is also a decent option if you already have a level 1 monster on your field. This can potentially let you make 2 rank 1 Xyz in a turn.

Sylvan Peaskeeper
Sylvan Peaskeeper
WIND Plant ★1
ATK 400 / DEF 100
Chaotic Soldiers [R]
Rampage of the Forest [R]
When this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can excavate the top card of your Deck, and if it is a Plant-Type monster, send it to the Graveyard. Otherwise, place it on the bottom of your Deck. If this card is excavated from the Deck and sent to the Graveyard by a card effect: You can target 1 Level 4 or lower Plant-Type monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon that target. You can only use this effect of "Sylvan Peaskeeper" once per turn.

Oftentimes it's the main way to special summon a level 1 monster from the grave to make a rank 1.

Cherubsprout has a special summon effect to excavate more cards, while Princessprout can be good if you haven't used Cherubsprout's excavated effect to special summon a level 1 from your deck.

High-Leveled Sylvans

Aside from having excavate and excavated effects, these have different levels so you can do different follow-ups with your extra deck depending on what you have. Xyz cards are easier to make since Princessprout can be the other same-level monster.

These are usually summoned by either using Rose Lover or tribute summoning. They have a good amount of ATK to act as the main beaters of the deck, and special summoned with Rose Lover makes them immune to trap cards for a turn as well.

Sylvan Hermitree
Sylvan Hermitree
FIRE Plant ★8
ATK 2700 / DEF 1800
Rampage of the Forest [R]
Once per turn: You can excavate the top card of your Deck, and if it is a Plant-Type monster, send it to the Graveyard, and if you do, draw 1 card. Otherwise, place it on the bottom of your Deck. If this card is excavated from the Deck and sent to the Graveyard by a card effect: Look at up to 3 cards from the top of your Deck, then place them on the top of the Deck in any order.
Sylvan Guardioak
Sylvan Guardioak
EARTH Plant ★6
ATK 2400 / DEF 1500
Rampage of the Forest [N]
Once per turn: You can choose a number from 1 to 3, then excavate that many cards from the top of your Deck, send any excavated Plant-Type monsters to the Graveyard, also place the other cards on the bottom of your Deck in any order. If this card is excavated from the Deck and sent to the Graveyard by a card effect: You can target 1 other Plant-Type monster in your Graveyard; place that target on top of your Deck.

Hermitree and Guardioak are some of the ways to help get some control over what you end up excavating.

  • Marshalleaf or Komushroomo if you need a monster/backrow removal.
  • Cherubsprout if you want to special summon a level 1 tuner from your deck.
  • Princessprout if you want to make a rank 8 (Heliopolis).
  • Peaskeeper if there's any level 4 or lower plant monster in your grave that you want to special summon.

Its excavated effect is what lets it re-use all the sylvan's effect. Cherubsprout is usually a good option in most cases because of its special summoning effect, but Princessprout is also another good option for some Xyz follow-up.

Sylvan Sagequoia
Sylvan Sagequoia
WIND Plant ★7
ATK 2600 / DEF 2100
Chaotic Soldiers [R]
When a "Sylvan" monster is sent to the Graveyard (except during the Damage Step): You can Special Summon this card from your hand. Once per turn: You can excavate the top card of your Deck, and if it is a Plant-Type monster, send it to the Graveyard. Otherwise, place it on the bottom of your Deck. If this card is excavated from the Deck and sent to the Graveyard by a card effect: You can target 1 "Sylvan" Spell/Trap Card in your Graveyard; add that target to your hand.

This is pretty much the main way to Xyz into Orea. Ideally, you want to start with this in your hand so it can special summon itself. Otherwise, you can special summon this if it's in the grave by using Princessprite's effect.

Its excavated effect is used to get the field spell from the grave to hand. But since some of the excavating effects don't put non-plant type cards to the grave, Sagequoia's excavated effect isn't that reliable.

Rose Lover

Rose Lover
Rose Lover
EARTH Plant ★1
ATK 800 / DEF 800
Card Trader [SR]
You can banish this card from the Graveyard; Special Summon 1 Plant-Type monster from your hand, and if you do, it is unaffected by your opponent's Trap effects this turn. You can only use this effect of "Rose Lover" once per turn.

Since most of the monsters have effects to excavate cards, Rose Lover is useful in general to special summon any monster in your hand. You can reliably get Rose Lover from your deck by using Cherubsprout's excavated effects, but to send it to the grave, it will need to Xyz with another level 1 monster so it can be sent to the graveyard when used as cost.

Tuners

Glow-Up Bulb
Glow-Up Bulb
EARTH Plant ★1
ATK 100 / DEF 100
Judgement Force [UR]
If this card is in the Graveyard: You can send the top card of your Deck to the Graveyard, and if you do, Special Summon this card. You can only use this effect of "Glow-Up Bulb" once per Duel.

It's a level 1 monster so it can help make a rank 1 Xyz, but also a tuner so you can use it with some of the higher level monsters to bring powerful generic synchros like Hot Red Dragon Archfiend or Cyber Slash Harpie Lady.

Make Princessprite with another level 1 monster, then bring itself back from the grave so that Princessprite can use it to special summon a Sylvan monster from the grave.

Mount Sylvania

Mount Sylvania
Mount Sylvania
Field Spell
Chaotic Soldiers [N]
You can send 1 Plant-Type monster from your hand or face-up from your side of the field to the Graveyard; choose 1 "Sylvan" card from your Deck and place it on top of the Deck. You can only use this effect of "Mount Sylvania" once per turn. Once per turn, during your opponent's End Phase: You can excavate the top card of your Deck, and if it is a Plant-Type monster, send it to the Graveyard. Otherwise, place it on either the top or bottom of your Deck.

If it's used as an opening, Cherubsprout or Princessprout are good options so you can make a rank 1 Xyz. Otherwise, you can activate the field spell as your last play before you end your turn so you can put a Marshalleaf or Komushroomo to the top of your deck and excavated at the end of your opponent's turn.

Extra Decks

Any of the Xyz monsters can be pretty easy to make since Princessprout can be special summoned as a level 1~8 through its excavated effect, while synchros will need to rely on Glow-Up Bulb.

Hot Red Dragon Archfiend
Hot Red Dragon Archfiend
DARK Dragon ★8
ATK 3000 / DEF 2000
Pendulum Genesis [UR]
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
Once per turn, during your Main Phase 1: You can destroy all other face-up Attack Position monsters on the field. Monsters other than this card cannot attack the turn you activate this effect.

Useful if you need to remove multiple monsters, but not good as a follow-up since it will also destroy your own monsters. Make this by using Sagequoia and Glow-Up Bulb.

Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis
Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis
LIGHT Dragon ★8
ATK 3000 / DEF 2500
Infinite Ray [UR]
2 Level 8 monsters
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; Tribute any number of monsters from your hand and/or your side of the field (minimum 1), then destroy an equal number of cards on the field.

A pretty good generic rank 8 since it gives more controlled card removals, but needs resources to use compared to Hot Red Dragon. What makes both Heliopolis and Hot Red Dragon stands out is that they can still attack after destroying cards.

Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack
Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack
WIND Machine ★7
ATK 2600 / DEF 2200
Sign of Harpies [UR]
2 Level 7 monsters
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; Special Summon 2 "Mecha Phantom Beast Tokens" (Machine-Type/WIND/Level 3/ATK 0/DEF 0). While you control a Token, this card cannot be destroyed by battle or card effects. Once per turn: You can Tribute 1 "Mecha Phantom Beast" monster, then target 1 card on the field; destroy that target. This card cannot attack during the turn you activate this effect.

It's a pretty decent defensive card, but might not be used that often because of how easy it is to swarm the field with monsters. Rarely will there be opportunities where you use the 3 zones for only this.

Sylvan Princessprite
Sylvan Princessprite
LIGHT Plant ★1
ATK 1800 / DEF 100
Chaotic Soldiers [SR]
Selection Box Vol.04 [SR]
2 Level 1 monsters
You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; excavate the top card of your Deck, and if it is a Spell/Trap Card, add it to your hand. Otherwise, send it to the Graveyard. You can send 1 other Plant-Type monster from your hand or face-up from your field to the Graveyard, then target 1 "Sylvan" monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon it. You can only use each effect of "Sylvan Princessprite" once per turn.

Will be made pretty often during duels because of how easy it is to summon. Use the level 1 monsters and activate their effects to excavate, then Xyz into Princessprite for another excavate before ending with a special summon of a Sylvan from the grave.

Orea, the Sylvan High Arbiter
Orea, the Sylvan High Arbiter
EARTH Plant ★7
ATK 2800 / DEF 2500
Chaotic Soldiers [R]
2 Level 7 monsters
Once per turn: You can send 1 Plant-Type monster from your hand or face-up from your side of the field to the Graveyard; look at a number of cards from the top of your Deck equal to the Level that the sent monster had in the hand or on the field, then place them on the top of the Deck in any order. Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; choose a number from 1 to 3, then excavate that many cards from the top of your Deck, send any excavated Plant-Type monsters to the Graveyard, and if you do, return up to that many cards from the field to the hand (min. 1), except this card. Also, place the other cards on the bottom of your Deck in any order.

This is pretty much the main monster that's best to summon with this deck. It gives a good amount of control over what cards will be excavated, and it also comes with some card removals that are pretty good against extra deck monsters.

Other Cards Option

World Carrotweight Champion

World Carrotweight Champion
World Carrotweight Champion
DARK Plant ★4
ATK 1900 / DEF 0
Rampage of the Forest [R]
If this card is in your Graveyard: You can send 1 Plant-Type monster from your hand or face-up from your field to the Graveyard, except "World Carrotweight Champion"; Special Summon this card. You can only use this effect of "World Carrotweight Champion" once per turn.

Since you want Naturia Pineapple and Amarylease in your graveyard, it would be bad if they got stuck in your hand. As a solution you can send them to the graveyard to special summon World Carrotweight Champion from your graveyard. Carrotweight can then be used as a beater or as tribute to summon Sylvan Hermitree in combination with Amarylease.
You can also send the low-leveled Sylvans to the grave to revive Carrotweight after you are done using their excavation effects.

Raging Mad Plants

Raging Mad Plants
Raging Mad Plants
Quick Spell
Land of the Titans [SR]
All Plant-Type monsters you currently control gain 300 ATK for each Plant-Type monster currently in your Graveyard, until the end of this turn. During the End Phase, destroy all Plant-Type monsters you control.

It can help end duels more quickly, but the nature of the deck can be quite a gamble and there's no way to reliably get this to the hand.

Number 68: Sanaphond the Sky Prison

Number 68: Sanaphond the Sky Prison
Number 68: Sanaphond the Sky Prison
DARK Rock ★8
ATK 2100 / DEF 2700
Infinite Ray [R]
2 Level 8 monsters
Gains 100 ATK and DEF for each monster in the GYs. Once per turn: You can detach 1 material from this card; until the end of your opponent's next turn, this card cannot be destroyed by card effects, also neither player can Special Summon monsters from the GYs.

Offers the deck a potentially more safe turn 1 monster to summon, but also has a small use against certain decks that rely on their graveyard.

honest opinion
I think they are OK now.
Not that deadly nor devastating.

But yeah, I agree with everyone who said Sylvans almost killed Duel Links back in the day, the player base decreased tremendously and it happened so quickly. Maybe the developers shouldn't have released them for this speed duel formats, it was a very BAD idea in my opinion, why? because their playing style is very different from Yu-Gi-Oh! It's too simple.

I know it was countered by Saffira, but even so, It's the only deck I have ever complained about. Fur Hire never bothered me, they were fun to go against and they were easily countered, also, Fur Hires ARE Yu-Gi-Oh!, Sylvans dropped cards from deck to graveyard and that was all. Maybe freeing rose lover and killing sylvans would be idea, plats would have future that way. Gigaplant, Aromage META or any other plant archetype don't bother players.

Ive played sylvans literally non stop since they are my favourite deck. I havent used merchant raging build in a while(dont have 🔥 plants on new account) but the list looks decent. I personally play 3 shroom 3 leaf 3 guardioak 1 hermitree 2 rose lover 1 flowerknight 1 peaskeeper 2 carrot 3 carrot and 2 backrow atm- flowerknight peaskeeper are toolboxes if you mill both without hermitree its op.

I also have 1 lotuswain to recycle but that was before banlist cos it was super good now we have 3 marshaleaf im testing whether lotuswain is worth cos its dead in hand just for excavate eff
@johnnysonic1
I think Sylvans are still viable. I use this deck with a variation of spell/trap cards depending on the meta. Between rose lover and marshalleaf i would go rose lover. I've been in high/mid plat multiple seasons and can beat the top tier decks about half the time. Easy set-ups.

The guy above is kinda paranoid. Sylvans are still viable and op, but you need to play them with Black Rose Dragon and 2 Rose Lovers with No Marshleafs.
