Photon is an XYZ focused deck that uses many Light level 4 monsters with good special summoning abilities for the main purpose of special summoning Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon. The deck has a pretty good consistency to go into the boss monster quite often, and Kite Tenjo's skill gives the added bonus of ensuring that you can get Photon Stream of Destruction to pair with Galaxy-Eyes when you need it.
[Skill] description | User |
---|---|
Galaxy Photon Return 1 “Galaxy” monster or “Photon” monster to your Deck from your hand and add 1 “Galaxy” Spell/Trap Card or “Photon” Spell/Trap Card to your hand. This Skill can only be used if you begin the Duel with a Deck that contains no monsters other than LIGHT monsters and "Number" monsters. This Skill can only be used once per Duel. | Kite Tenjo |
Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon | LIGHT Dragon ★8 ATK 3000 / DEF 2500 |
Photons of Galaxy [UR] | |
You can Special Summon this card (from your hand) by Tributing 2 monsters with 2000 or more ATK. During either player's Battle Step, when this card battles an opponent's monster: You can target the monster this card is battling; banish both the opponent's monster and this card. At the end of the Battle Phase, return any monsters banished by this effect to the field, and if the other monster was an Xyz Monster, this card gains 500 ATK for each Xyz Material it had when it was banished. |
Most of your low-level monsters have 2000 ATK and can Special Summon themselves, so these can easily fulfill Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon's summoning cost. But a better way of summoning Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon is through Galaxion.
Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon's effect is itself quite powerful as non-targeting non-destruction removal. The monster returns at the end of the Battle Phase, but this can give you enough time to attack directly with your other monsters. It is also apparent that Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon is meant to counter Xyz monsters. Even temporarily banishing an Xyz monster will remove all of its materials, and Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon gains ATK for each of these materials.
Photon Orbital | LIGHT Machine ★4 ATK 500 / DEF 2000 |
Darkness Gimmick [SR] | |
During your Main Phase: You can target 1 "Photon" or "Galaxy" monster you control; equip this monster from your hand or field to that target. It gains 500 ATK, also it cannot be destroyed by battle. You can send this Equip Card to the GY; add 1 "Photon" or "Galaxy" monster from your Deck to your hand, except "Photon Orbital". You can only use this effect of "Photon Orbital" once per turn. |
A pretty good searcher for any of your cards in the deck. Recommended using this early in the combo when you only have one monster in case your opponent uses something like Treacherous Trap Hole.
Photon Thrasher | LIGHT Warrior ★4 ATK 2100 / DEF 0 |
Photons of Galaxy [UR] | |
Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must first be Special Summoned (from your hand) while you control no monsters. If you control another monster, this card cannot attack. |
Start your combo by Special Summoning Thrasher while you control no monsters. If you don't have Thrasher, fetch it with Lizard's effect.
Photon Advancer | LIGHT Warrior ★4 ATK 1000 / DEF 1000 |
Kite Tenjo [UR] Number Hunter: Kite Tenjo Unlock Event [UR] | |
If a "Photon" monster is on the field, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). You can only Special Summon "Photon Advancer" once per turn this way. Gains 1000 ATK if another "Photon" monster is on the field. |
Photon Advancer is more versatile than Thrasher and Vanisher because you actually have the choice to Normal Summon or Special Summon Advancer, so he'll never be a dead card. You can Normal Summon Advancer then Special Special Summon Vanisher, or you can Special Summon Thrasher then Special Summon Advancer; both resulting in your standard Rank-4 play.
Photon Vanisher | LIGHT Warrior ★4 ATK 2000 / DEF 0 |
Photons of Galaxy [SR] | |
Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must first be Special Summoned (from your hand) while you control a "Photon" or "Galaxy" monster. Cannot attack the turn it is Special Summoned. You can only Special Summon "Photon Vanisher(s)" once per turn. If this card is Special Summoned: You can add 1 "Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon" from your Deck to your hand. An Xyz Monster that was Summoned using this card on the field as material gains this effect. ● Banish any monster destroyed by battle with this card. |
When Thrasher is already on board, Special Summon Vanisher and search Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon. At this point you can either summon Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon or make a Rank-4.
Photon Crusher | LIGHT Warrior ★4 ATK 2000 / DEF 0 |
Kite Tenjo [SR] Kite Tenjo Roaming Event [SR] | |
If this card attacks, it is changed to Defense Position at the end of the Damage Step. |
A monster to normal summon so that the deck is less reliant on Thrasher/Lizard, allowing you to special summon Advancer/Vanisher to start making plays.
Photon Lizard | LIGHT Reptile ★3 ATK 900 / DEF 1200 |
Photons of Galaxy [SR] | |
You can Tribute this card; add 1 Level 4 or lower "Photon" monster from your Deck to your hand. You can only use this effect of "Photon Lizard" once per turn. |
Lizard is used to effectively fetch a Photon monster in exchange for your Normal Summon. Since all of your other Main Deck monsters have their own Special Summoning condition, losing your Normal Summon isn't really a problem. If your field is empty, Normal Summon Photon Lizard then fetch Thrasher to get your combo going. If you already have Thrasher then fetch Vanisher.
Photon Stream of Destruction | Quick Spell |
Kite Tenjo at lvl 10, 18 and 25 [UR] | |
If you control a "Galaxy-Eyes" monster: Target 1 card on the field; banish that target. You can only activate this card during your turn, unless you control "Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon". |
Photon Stream of Destruction is a powerful removal card that doesn't require any cost. The fact that it's a Quick-Play Spell makes it much more versatile because you can use it during the opponent's turn when they play a powerful monster. Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon is your main boss monster so the second condition isn't much of a problem.
Fetch Photon Stream with your Skill.
Accellight | Normal Spell |
Heart of Xyz [R] | |
If you control no monsters: Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower "Photon" or "Galaxy" monster from your Deck. You can only activate 1 "Accellight" per turn. You cannot Normal Summon/Set during the turn you activate this card. |
A good starter card for special summoning 1 Photon monster follow with another Level 4 Photon monster. Ideally, you can dive into Xyz Summon Lord Galaxion with those monster and special summon Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon alongside with Photon Stream of Destruction set on your field.
Galaxy Zero | Equip Spell |
Heart of Xyz [R] | |
Target 1 "Photon" or "Galaxy" monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon it in face-up Attack Position and equip it with this card. It cannot attack or activate its effects. If it would be destroyed during the Battle Phase, you can destroy this card instead. When this card leaves the field: The equipped monster's ATK becomes 0. You can only activate 1 "Galaxy Zero" per turn. |
A revival tech that can allows you to special summon Photon Dragon or 1 of any Photon Monsters from your Graveyard. However, the monster's ATK will becomes 0 and nor attack or activates effect. So usually this card will only be used for revive 1 monster for Xyz Summon material for now.
Heroic Champion - Excalibur | LIGHT Warrior ★4 ATK 2000 / DEF 2000 |
Eternal Stream [UR] | |
2 Level 4 Warrior-Type monsters Once per turn: You can detach 2 Xyz Materials from this card; this card's ATK becomes double its original ATK until your opponent's next End Phase. |
This deck can go into rank 4 XYZs very easily, so this is just another option once your other rank 4s are used up. Excalibur can help get over high ATK monsters since it can reach 4000 ATK.
Most of the time it just works once since most decks will find ways to deal with this when they get to their turn, so don't expect this to survive that long.
Starliege Lord Galaxion | LIGHT Warrior ★4 ATK 2000 / DEF 2100 |
Kite Tenjo at lvl 30 [UR] | |
2 Level 4 "Photon" monsters Once per turn: You can detach 1 or 2 Xyz Materials from this card; apply this effect, depending on the number you detached. ● 1: Special Summon 1 "Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon" from your hand. ● 2: Special Summon 1 "Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon" from your Deck. |
Galaxion fast tracks Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon onto the field. So for your main combo:
Sometimes it's better to Special Summon Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon from your hand. This way Galaxion will have one material left to Special Summon a backup Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon.
Starliege Paladynamo | LIGHT Warrior ★4 ATK 2000 / DEF 1000 |
Selection Box Vol.04 [UR] Darkness Gimmick [UR] | |
2 Level 4 LIGHT monsters Once per turn: You can detach 2 Xyz Materials from this card to target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; its ATK becomes 0, and if it does, its effects are negated. When this card you control is destroyed by your opponent's card (either by battle or by card effect) and sent to your Graveyard: Draw 1 card. |
Summon Paladynamo and use its effect to completely cripple a powerful enemy monster. This works for getting rid of threats that are immune to effect removal. After spending its effect Paladynamo just becomes a beater, then you get to replenish the cost of making him when he leaves the field.
Number C39: Utopia Ray | LIGHT Warrior ★4 ATK 2500 / DEF 2000 |
Infinite Ray [UR] | |
3 Level 4 LIGHT monsters You can also Xyz Summon this card by using a "Number 39: Utopia" you control as the Xyz Material. (Xyz Materials attached to that monster also become Xyz Materials on this card.) You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; it gains 500 ATK and 1 monster your opponent controls loses 1000 ATK, until the End Phase. You must have 1000 Life Points or less to activate and to resolve this effect. |
Since you can only use Utopia Ray's effect when down to your last 1000 LP, he is best used to clutch the game. The ATK manipulation can help you get rid of a powerful enemy monster and deal massive damage. Keep in mind this effect can be activated multiple times per turn as long as you have the materials.
Number 39: Utopia | LIGHT Warrior ★4 ATK 2500 / DEF 2000 |
Shining Hope [UR] | |
2 Level 4 monsters When any player's monster declares an attack: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; negate the attack. When this card is targeted for an attack, while it has no Xyz Materials: Destroy this card. |
Reserve Utopia until you plan to make Utopia Ray.
Number 70: Malevolent Sin | DARK Insect ★4 ATK 2400 / DEF 1200 |
Photons of Galaxy [SR] | |
2 Level 4 monsters Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then target 1 monster your opponent controls; banish it until your opponent's next Standby Phase. At the end of the Damage Step, if this card attacked: You can make this card gain 300 ATK, and if you do, increase its Rank by 3. |
Galaxion into Photon Dragon is always the better play to make first when you can make a rank 4 because of the skill, while Malevolent Sin is a good follow-up if your monsters are destroyed. Together with Photon Stream of Destruction, the deck will have multiple ways to banish your opponent's cards.
Number 18: Heraldry Patriarch | LIGHT Psychic ★4 ATK 2200 / DEF 2200 |
Voltage of the Metal [R] | |
2 Level 4 monsters Once per Chain, during either player's turn, if 2 or more monsters with the same name are on the field: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; choose 1 monster among those with the same name, and destroy all other monsters with that name. While this card remains face-up on the field, your opponent cannot Summon monsters with the same name as any of the monster(s) chosen for this card's effect. If this card is sent to the Graveyard: You can send 2 "Heraldic Beast" monsters from your Deck to the Graveyard. |
Useful when decks that often use monsters with the same name become popular in the meta. Decks like Harpies or Cyber Dragon are examples where Heraldry Patriarch can be effective.
Neo Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon | LIGHT Dragon ★8 ATK 4500 / DEF 3000 |
Eternal Stream [UR] | |
3 Level 8 monsters When this card is Xyz Summoned using "Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon" as any of its Materials: Negate the effects of all other face-up cards currently on the field. Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; detach all Xyz Materials from monsters your opponent controls, then this card gains 500 ATK for each, also it can attack up to that many times during each Battle Phase this turn. |
Special summonable by using Eternal Galaxy trap instead of 3 level 8 monsters. This can be a game-winning card due to its high attack and strong effect.
Since it's summoned using the trap, you won't be able to use its first effect to negate cards. However, you can use the second effect during your turn to secure some games.
Eternal Galaxy | Normal Trap |
Eternal Stream [SR] | |
If you control a "Photon" or "Galaxy" monster: Target 1 Xyz Monster you control; Special Summon from your Extra Deck, 1 "Photon" or "Galaxy" Xyz Monster that is 4 Ranks higher than that target, by using that target as material. (This is treated as an Xyz Summon. Transfer its materials to the Summoned monster.) You can only activate 1 "Eternal Galaxy" per turn. |
Use this on your rank 4 XYZ to special summon Neo Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon.
A little slow compared to the other plays the main deck can do. but being a trap also means that you can use this for additional attacks, or dodge targeted card effects.
Number 91: Thunder Spark Dragon | LIGHT Dragon ★4 ATK 2400 / DEF 2000 |
Infinite Ray [SR] | |
3 Level 4 monsters Once per turn, you can activate 1 of these effects. ● Detach 3 Xyz Materials from this card; destroy all other face-up monsters on the field. ● Detach 5 Xyz Materials from this card; destroy all cards your opponent controls. |
Useful for monsters that can't be targeted, but needing 3 level 4 means that you have to go for this in the early turns instead of Photon Dragon.
Bujintei Tsukuyomi | LIGHT Beast-Warrior ★4 ATK 1800 / DEF 2300 |
Shining Hope [SR] | |
2 Level 4 LIGHT monsters Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; send your entire hand to the Graveyard (min. 1), and if you do, draw 2 cards. When this card you controlled while face-up leaves the field because of an opponent's card effect: You can target Level 4 Beast-Warrior-Type "Bujin" monsters in your Graveyard, up to the number of Xyz Materials this card had on the field; Special Summon those targets. You can only control 1 "Bujintei Tsukuyomi". |
The Deck's combos can quickly go through your resources, and you don't really have many ways of regaining these resources. Tsukuyomi helps replenish your hand, but you should only use its effect when you're down to your last hand card.
Vylon Disigma | LIGHT Fairy ★4 ATK 2500 / DEF 2100 |
Rage of Volcano [SR] | |
3 Level 4 monsters Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card to target 1 face-up Attack Position Effect Monster your opponent controls; equip that target to this card. At the start of the Damage Step, if this card battles a monster whose Attribute is the same as a card equipped by this effect: Destroy that monster. |
For rare situations where you find yourself unable to get over your opponent's monsters. The requirement of needing the monster to be face-up attack position is easy enough that Vylon Disigma can be used most of the time. But it can be a risky play since it requires 3 monsters, and your opponent can disrupt this by using spells/traps, also not effective against untargetable cards.
Constellar Omega | LIGHT Beast-Warrior ★4 ATK 2400 / DEF 500 |
Infinite Ray [R] | |
2 Level 4 LIGHT monsters Once per turn, during either player's turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; all "Constellar" monsters you currently control are unaffected by Spell/Trap effects this turn. |
All your Xyz materials are LIGHT Level-4s, giving you access to Constellar Omega for a beater immune to backrow effects.
Photon Papilloperative | LIGHT Warrior ★4 ATK 2100 / DEF 1800 |
Photons of Galaxy [R] | |
2 Level 4 monsters Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then target 1 Defense Position monster on the field; change it to face-up Attack Position, and if you do, it loses 600 ATK. |
Once you have the upper hand in the duel, your opponent might play more defensively and set their monsters. Having this as an option is a decent monster to bring out once you have Photon Dragon on the field. It also lets you use Photon Stream on your opponent's back row more safely as well.

Put heraldry patriarch in your extra deck to counter Harpie and Blue-Eyes. I do have 1 but I just forgot to put it.
