The following four notes are the basics of the phase:
The battle phase is the phase which a player moves from the main phase 1 to.
A player can declare an attack only during a battle phase.
This phase can be skipped if a player do not want to conduct a battle.
A player who goes first do not have a right to have a battle phase for a first turn (From the second turn, the player can conduct a battle phase).
Steps
Four steps
The battle phase consists of the following four steps:
Start Step
Battle Step
Damage Step
End Step
Flow of the battle phase
The battle step and damage step are conducted whenever a player have a battle.
Step
Description
Start Step
The step to begin the battle phase.
Battle Step
The step to attack with your monster card.
Damage Step
The step to calculate how much damage a player get.
End Step
The step to end the battle phase.
Damage Step
Activating card effects
During the damage step, cards that are spell speed 2 or 3 can be activated to use their effect. That means that a player can use quick-play spell, monster's quick effect, normal/continuous/counter traps in the step.
Combat trick, the term used in Japan, refers to that activating the effects of cards, such as Shrink and Rush Recklessly, during the damage step in order to help a monster card to beat the monster card controlled by an opponent.
In the Duel Link's official promotion video, Kaiba Seto activates Reinforcements during a damage step. That is combat trick.
Card effect activation is not prevented by spell speed 1 cards since those cards cannot be used during the damage step.

Ok so someone explain to me this: I had swift Gaia out, opponent attacked me while o had windstorm of etaqua, wild tornado and imterdimensional transporter face down, waited till the damage step, activated metal morph and I could not activate and of the 3 even tho all 3 would have helped me. They are all spell speed 2. I could not activate wild storm yet because they did not reveal the metalmorph yet and when they did, I was not giving the option to activate one of my 3 traps. Please explain cuz this is ridiculous
