Incorrect, it'll work on direct attacks just fine. In this case, it means attacks or is attacked. (Depending on context, some cards also use it to refer to Damage Calculation having occured for that monster.)

A monster battles as long as it is in the battle phase.

Triamids, you are a broken, bizarre excuse of a dysfunctional deck. All the crap you do comes down to this 🔥ly broken card. Take it away and your 🔥 deck dies completely. It’s way overdue the limit now, R card that’s completely overpowered.
