I just tried it again today. This time, there were no spell or trap cards anywhere on the field. It is still not working.

What the previous guys said. Your opponent must only control monster(s) in defense position. Face-up or face-down doesn't matter, as long as they are all in defense and your opponent doesn't have anything else on his field. Having a field spell counts as controlling something else.

Also note that when you use Fossil Excavation, the monster you summon has its effect negated too. It's very easy to forget.

The only CARDS that your opponent should control in order for you to activate its effect have to be face-down defense position monsters. If your opponent has any attack-position monsters or spell/trap cards on the field, BT cannot attack directly
