That card saved me. All my Spirit of White were banished by 1 Karma Cut. Was panicked, then I noticed I could summon this awesome Sorcerer. I returned the favour by banishing his face-up monsters. Then with my level 1 tuners I could do FL Every, Samurai destroyer or Black Rose if it was needed. If you hate KarmaCut definitely use this good boy.

I assume you tried to chain Hydrangea in your hand to this card's effect during Damage Step. As far as I know, you can't Special Summon in Damage Step, unless a card specifically stated you can. So you cannot activate Hydrangea's effect to SS itself from your hand if you activate Stag Beetle's effect in Damage Step, since unlike this card, Hydrangea doesn't say it can SS during Damage Step.
