Level up character especially up to lvl30, and participate in the event.
Even if you don't like the event or the card rewards from that event, at least aim to get all gems rewards from it.
So far, I see KC Cup & WCS gave possibly the most gems with not much effort.

Get characters to level 30, levels 28, 29 and 30 of every character give you 750 gems.
Also pay attention to special events, some have a lot of gem rewards.
