Fusion Substitute monsters can replace named monsters on a fusion monster, but they can't replace unnamed monsters, IE for Buster Blader, the dragon destruction swordmaster fusion, you can use Versago as a substitute for Buster Blader, but you can't use it as a substitute for a 'dragon type' monster.

Substitute fusion monsters only work with at least one of the original fusion materials.

{Versago the Destroyer} You can substitute this card for any 1 Fusion Material Monster. When you do this, the other Fusion Material Monster(s) must be the correct one(s).
Assuming you have the correct Extra Deck monsters you are attempting to summon, you must have one of the exactly listed monsters on the Fusion-type monster's description if you are using fusion-substitute monsters [Versago the Destroyer, Goddess with the Third Eye, Mystical Sheep 1]. This means if a Fusion-type monster requires 2,3,4,... monsters to fusion summon, you can only use 1 fusion substitute monster to complete the summon.
Ex:Meteor B. Dragon = Red-Eyes Black Dragon + fusion substitute OR Meteor Dragon + fusion substitute
