Level Effect/Coins

I'm new on DL, so I have a few questions:
1.What does leveling up the characters do other than getting them skills and cards? (or is that all its for?)
2. What are coins used for other than trading basic cards with the Card Trader?

2. there's no way currently to trade coin instead in card trader.

2.the gems you get from leveling up your character are to buy packs from the shop,if you have no gems u may use real money to buy them .Gold is to buy cards from the card trader -no money need
