Do crystal beasts avoid quick play spells?

I'm trying to unlock Jesse and twice now his crystal beasts have avoided my enemy controllers without giving me the chance to even activate them on his battle phase. Am I missing something or is this a bug to do with the crystal beasts.

No the crystal beasts are affected by quick play spells if the game doesn’t pop up a little pad that lets you activate the quick play spells while in the battle phase you may want to turn that feature on

You may have accidentally tapped the off for automatic activation so that it was skipped.
