you my have been playing against vagabond's no special summon condition. also you cant use fusion substitutes for materials that don't use specific names such as the 2 "ojama" monsters. Tis is because of a Rule konami made on how fusion material is listed to balance the game.

once you laern how to splel proeprly tehn tlak
to me. make sure it isn't an effect of a card that's preventing you from special summoning for the rest of the turn, or that in the unlikely event that they used extra gate.

Are your fusion materials both ojama cards?
Or is one a fusion material substitute?
Ojama knight cant be summoned with substitutes as "ojama monster" isnt a speficic card.
Unlike ojama king.
For ojama king you can use substitutes. As "ojama green/yellow/black" are specific cards.
