Question

First turn rules for special summoning?

When I try using effects of cards like Merlin or Photon Lizard during my first turn in a PvP duel it doesn't work. Is there a rule about that that I'm missing?

Thank you very much for posting this question, I just came back to the game and don't remember The Balance skill having a caveat like this

Don't read your skills or any card effects. It's not worth it and you will have way more fun if you don't have to read everything because that's so annoying.

You might have used Balance skill (but I think that some other have this effect) which disallows you to special summon on 1st turn. I hope that helped you, cheers.
