He didn't necessarily retire from dueling itself just because he gave Syrus his deck and he was excited about starting his own pro league. So saying "poor Zane" and speaking of him in past tense just makes it sound like they thought he was dead since I don't see any other reason why they would feel sorry for him since he was happy in the end.
