Missed activation timing on storm with castle of dragon souls

say I have a face up CODS and I activate storm assuming a dragon is banished preemptively from the effect and I activate storm. When I do, my CODS is destroyed and I destroy his spells/traps, but then a message pops up saying I missed the activation on my castle. I'm not sure if it is that my opponents have always has a response or if it is something to do with the card chain setting in the settings, but this has lost me many games. Why is this happening?

It misses the timing because of the "when" clause in yugioh. Because when is in the card text, that effect has to be the last thing to resolve in the chain for the optional effect to activate. But since you cast storm, the last thing to happen in the chain is the destroying of your opponents spells/traps, so it misses the optional timing.
