Hi, pretty new player here, so i was in a duel with someone when i attacked gozuki with my aromage rosemary. My opponent flipped over a widespread ruin, i chained cosmic cyclone to it but it still destroyed my monster. Can someone with knowledge on this explain it please?

Actually, you can negate the effect of a Spell/Trap with Cosmic Cyclone if it was already face-up (Continuous Spell/Trap or Field Spell, like Call of the Archfiend and Fire King Island), but it should be an effect that activates if you go to the card and press "Activate Effect", that is called Ignition-like Effect (Ignition Effect is used for monsters).

If you use Cosmic Cyclone in a Chain to banish a flipped over Magic/Trap Card that card effect will activate even after Cosmic Cyclone effect is applied.
But if the card you chain to the flipped over card has a "negate that effect" clause stated in the text, like Champion's Vigilance, the countered Magic/Trap card effect won't activate.

the effect was activated in the moment widespread ruin went face-up, you can only destroy the card but not negate the effect, to do what you want to do it needs to say explicitly "negate that effect" which it doesn't
