I have found that Joey or Pegasus are the best

For me, Yugi is the best, but that's because I got the skill set "balance." This makes your starting hand be determined by the make-up of your deck when it comes to monsters, spells and traps.

Ive been using bandit. I use the karate man 1 turn KO deck. It works great with his switcheroo skill. Lets me get the full combo in a just a couple turns.
