Your opponent takes the damage from the card while it's on their side of the field, not you. The key is that you need to use cards that neuter it. Combo Lava Golem with a mask of the accursed, and your opponent is left with a card that can't attack while taking 1500 damage each turn. Add judgement of Anubis and your opponent dies trying to get rid of the mask.
Alternatively, put in a few Blasts Held By a Tribute and your opponent can't even tribute the Golem without taking damage. Perfect for stalling/burn-out decks. Plus, you can get rid of two of your opponents monsters with Lava Golem. Tons of unconventional uses
