I speak Russian and I always laugh when foreigners try to imitate Russian in games and movies. Sometimes it is accurate speech, but more often it is very funny and does not make sense.

He's the villain of season 2 and a friend in season 3 and 5

His role as villain of Season 2 wasn't a very active one. Most of the Rare Hunters acted on their own with no real input from Marik during the Duel, so Marik's involvement there is very similar to Pegasus's over Duelist Kingdom's Eliminators, which wasn't a major one. His more direct duels with Strings and Joey were LESS successful than some of his Rare Hunters' efforts. Then Yami Marik took over.

And his involvement post-Yami Marik was pretty minor. Pegasus, Duke and Rebecca were easily more important after that point than Marik was, and none of them were super-plot-critical either. (Rebecca's role in Waking the Dragons is basically identical to Marik's in the final season, providing support primarily through information.)
