The game doesn't seem to like special summons. So things like level up to make a L7+ or the field spell to spend LP don't count. Using cards that count as 2 tribs, usually works, but you can also use cards that make tokens or resummon, etc to tribute. I'm not sure if cost down will count, but ancient rites does not.
