Is Seto Kiaba the only real character?

Reading the dialog between the characters throughout the game it seems like Seto is the only real character and he has created the others based on their decks and dueling history. Is this the correct lore? I know that Kaiba created the Duel link VR system that's based off transcend game. I've only read a bit into that though.

I think its both. Chars like Marik seem to have been created. While chars like Yugi, Joey, and Tea are "real".

On the Yani Marik lines , wath he said is clearly a reference to the series.
In short the guy had a split personalty , with one good half and a power hungry evil half.

where did you get that from? From what I read in game Joey says Kaiba ignore and not invite him. Yugi says as it is real fight between them. All other character say the same. Only Yami marik says marik is not with him but it's not unreal - something guiding that marik should be here later/separate identity.
