Because it was the only 1700 ATK monster in the game (with the exception of the also-UR Twin-Barrel Dragon) at the time? To be fair, it got quickly out-power-crept (the next set had Rare 1650's and the set after had a Super 1750), but still. No more surprising than, say, SR Vorse Raider IMO.
You realize Servants of Kings was released a year after Ultimate Rising, right? Even the first 1900 (Thunder Nyan Nyan, which has a big downside) was released 8 months after Axe Raider and still UR. Axe Raider was the highest ATK LV4 without a downside for 2 months, there weren't any better options for raw ATK. It deserves its spot. (Though it didn't see much use anyway due to Power of Dark.)
Yeah, totally. That's why Sphere Kuriboh and Sonic Bird are UR and Judge Man, which is a much crappier card than Axe Raider, is SR.
Realistically, Axe Raider's UR rarity was probably not warranted due to Twin-Barrel Dragon and Power of Dark outclassing it from the get-go, but it wasn't super out of place, either. It was definitely better than BEUD and Summoner in the beginning.
From what I see, with each new boxe that gets released, Konami tries to make the previous/older cards more and more obsolete so that you stop using them.
If you want to stay competitive you must constantly buy new cards that gradually outclasses the older ones with each passing releases.
The main issue is, do you have the money to "keep the pace" ?
axe raider is UR bcuz old times 1700 counted high damage, no other monster with 4 star attribute have 1700 damage than him and then box after box release new monster with better damage come out and been rating as UR.
Example:-
dunames dark witch 1800 attack. normal monster and rating as UR.
Axe Raider is immune to fiendish chain, can beat a lot of strong cards: Aleister, level 4 Destiny Heroes (ATK 1600 or less), Merlin, level 3 Triamids, most level 4 or lower Blackwings, most level 4 or lower Shiranuis, etc, even Witchcrafter Madame Verre in attack position.
read carefully. i said it was back then. old times yugioh duel links. nowdays no one play normal monster to attack. they been used for synchro, xyz, fusion, ritual etc.
why you compare axe raider with aleister, destiny heroes, merlin even shiranui?
when they got synchro, xyz, can axe raider beat them? NO
