If it was optional it would miss the timing nearly all the time, defeating the purpose of the card.

This kind of effect can't really miss its timing anyway, so that's completely irrelevant. It'd just be an improvement. Koa'ki Meiru Guardian is a much better card than Doomcaliber Knight is. (Which is likely why we got Doomcaliber first.)

because, at the time this card was first printed in OCG, it being optional would have made it broken.

If it is optional then I will hate it even more because your opponent will do everything to make you miss timing.
