Are face up monsters on spell/trap zone considered face up spells? So thats why crystal beasts would work?

not just any monsters tho. crystal beasts specifically state that they are placed as continuous spell cards

Hamon needs Continuous Spells.

Monsters in S/T Zones are usually treated as Equip Spells.

CB works because they specifically stated they treat themselves as Continuous Spells.
