Okay here are the reasons why it was idiot to do it.The whole list of counter is a reason itself along that lava golem was never an op card and you could beat stall burn decks 70-80% of the time.Rb with lava is not considered a burn deck
Counters:
Trap:Divine wrath,ultimate providence,fiendish chain,ballista squad,raegeiki break,bad aim,
Spell:forbidden chalice, econ, certain effect negators or archetype cards.
Monsters:you can tribute or syncro lava
Blue eyes: syncro into vermillion or other
Blackwing:tribute lava for symoon
Karakuri:Tribute for kunazman
Invoked:fuse into purga
Neos:tribute lava for elemental hero neos
shiranoob:syncro into sunsaga
dm:tribute for dm
gouki:tribute for ryscorpio
gravekeeper:tribute it for a gk monster
dragunity:syncro into ascalon
vendread:riutal summon a monster with lava
As you see most decks have counters for it(and lots of decks i dont know may have too)these were the most popular ones.
Still they cut it in half like idiots
If you play the field spell "Undead World", Lava Golem can be used to summon Homuragami. It's the way an undead deck can make good use of the Shiranui extra deck without playing Shiranuis in the main deck since they are 🔥.
You won't always be able to counter it all the time.
Having counters does not always mean a card is not broken. It also depends on how consistent the counter can be pulled off.
Otherwise OCG/TCG would never have a Forbidden section, considering all the cards in the Forbidden section have their counter.
The card being hit also often gets hit because they themselves are too consistent, regardless of their counter.
Lava Golem has its burn nerfed because it's already consistent enough as a two monsters removal, adding a 1000 burn damage per turn on top of it, IN A 4000 LP ENVIRONMENT, was just too much.
I just see an inconsistency in this whole nerf situation. Duel Links is supposedly pro quick match; we got so much OTK strategies - and it's okay when we can win in just one turn by attacking. But when it comes to burn/Lava Golem, they want to stall much longer by making it 500 lp per turn, instead of 1000. I mean, the nerfed just make stall strategy slower, and be hated more.
I don't even play Lava Golem or burn decks, but I hate the fact that Konami would prefer to change and destroy old cards instead of making new, nerfed version of the would-be problematic old cards.
So who would play the nerfed one when they have much more op broken cards that they already have, in lava golem case it would be more healthy considering you ONLY HAVE 3 turns implying you have more than 3k lp to get rid that 🔥er and you should know they have more stall cards to make your tribute/synchro pointless + no degen use 1 golem
And two, I don't know what kind of "optimized meta deck" you play in your dream, but Legend and KOG (KCGP, even) have a lot of players in trouble after they got Lava Golem'd on the right time.
^The fact about lava golem reside on your field make it harder to remove it. And even if player have something in their deck to remove it, they only had 3 turn to make to remove it.
Full power lava golem is just too much in 4K LP format.
