Well just like kaiba's random blue eyes, yugi's random dark magician etc. Those characters came during the first era where "deck support cards" were almost unknown, and were more type/attribute support cards. Despite that, Joey used red eyes metal dragon, dragon nails, b skull dragon, re black dragon sword, lord of red etc. He had many support cards.

Even if you don't count REBMD, B Skull & REB Dragon Sword as RE support, they ARE related to the archetype.
Dragon Nails was never an actual card, no arguments on that.
Lord of the Red's ritual spell is Red-Eyes Transmigration. The ritual spell directly received support from RE cards and also it can use RE monster from grave for its ritual summon. Indirectly, Lord of the Red is related to RE.
Lord of the Red not being summonable with REBD alone actually makes sense if you consider it, lore-wise, as REBD merging with Joey. The additional 1 level comes from Joey.
