The real problem with Duke/Ryuuji was that the writers did not utilize well after DDM. Had the potential to be a good regular rival, but they just basically turned him into another cheerleader for Yugi.

Look at bastion from gx, potential rival, intelligent duelist. Hardly ever appeared after season 3.
