Just go for higher points all the time. Worst case you get half anyway. Defence wise I'd go for a varient to alien deck with backrow lockdown which has a 90% defence rate. The only issue is its ran by AI and its not the most intelligent tbh. Aim for the 6000+ duelists and build multiple decks to deal with the diffrrent archetypes. Skills can be a game changer. A cyber angel/safira deck works well.
I'm on 800,000 points already using the method above. I run a alien lockdown defence deck and 4 decks. UAGG, Cyber/Saffira w/ 2 Dakini for easy monster removal. Burn lockdown with lava golum and Mill lockdown with warm worm.
