Yes, you opponent can't activate karma in response to xyz block since it is a counter trap. You detach 1 material -> the effect is negated -> card is destroyed -> end of the chain. After this your opp can activate karma but it'd be too late

Remember how spell speed works, you can only chain a card with the same or higher spell speed.

*Card that can't be negated/responded to = speed 4
*Counter trap = speed 3
*Normal and continuous traps, quick play spell, quick effect = speed 2
*Cards that just can't chain to anything (like grave squirmer effect, normal/continuous/field/ritual spells,etc) = speed 1

Speed 4 is not an official term though. You can't chain a speed 4 card to every other card. So be careful with the spell speed 4 term.
