If they do this you can always put your monsters in defense position because you were not alloewed to attack directly.

The only rule with regards to attacking directly (that is, when they cared to explain it one time and never mentioned it again) was that if your field was empty on your opponent's turn, they could attack you directly. The problem was there was never an instance where someone had no monsters on the field, so it was never used.

In the first saga every monster was summoned without tribute...and that's why DM, REBD and BEWD were considered so strong in the manga.
