You’re thinking of old field spells that either had some gimmicky effect or some mediocre attack boost. Field spells these days are play extenders that search combo pieces.
There are many field spells relevant to why AFD is banned.
In fact, we're still getting crazy good field spells in OCG/TCG to this day, exactly because AFD is now banned, so it's kinda safe now to release those field spells.
