Considering the last time he made a non-cameo appearance in anything was hosting a failed talk show in 2004, is it that shocking? Heck, his main TV show ended in 1990, so most people here were probably born after the series ended.
Keep in mind I actually am familiar with ALF, too. And really, it's been long enough since watching the show that I don't remember anything beyond what he looks like.
