It's pretty much the same now, both thins your deck and lets you activate effects from the card you get/the card you sent to the graveyard.

Honestly, there's a solid reason why OCG/TCG players have, for many years now, consider the graveyard as "the second hand".

Draw 2 cards & discard 2 cards to GY from the deck are both the same. You will end up with the same number of remaining cards in your deck.

With the fusion spell, you get to choose and throw away 2 cards that you don't want to draw into your hand. This is deck thinning.

Being able to thin your cards down isn't everything. Dark World, Exodia, self-mill, etc. None of those are top-tier strategies. It's not about how many cards you draw. It's what you can do "with" said cards.
